Just looking at some threads, EU4 seems to just be a rehashed EU3, ie. only details will be changed. Agents (missionaries, merchants, etc.), prestige, stability, decisions, advisors, etc. all still seem to be in. While I'm not saying these aren't good ways to model it (preparing for an inevitable sh*tstorm of "WELL, HOW ELSE WOULD YOU MODEL IT?!?!?!?!"), there must be better ways to do model history and countries. I think it might be a good idea for Paradox to sit down and actually rework and rething everything from the beginning and the basics. Thoughts?

A lot of that is player speculation, not confirmed info. But still this is a sequel so it needs similar basics.

At least, we saw the trade routes, which would be in any case something new. And personally, I can't get over the fact, that there is this melting ice in Scandinavia. I don't think they do this only, so that Leviathan has more fun with the geographical map view...

They did the radical re-work with HOI3, which did not work out as intended.

So now they are going for a more evolutionary change, but with the benefit that things that were bolted on in the EU3 expansions can now be properly integrated more easily. And they have the experience of the other recent games for inspiration and guidance.

A radical new approach to a grand strategy, historically based and history mimicking game might be to big a jump for a flagship brand. Perhaps for the next smaller focussed game, such as a new Rome.

The trick with sequals is to keep the things that people like and work on the things that people don't like. So yes you will see somethings in EUIV that are rather similar to things in EUIII, we believe that these are the parts of the game that work and you like. Maybe we will be wrong, but you do not throw out the baby with the bath water.

I think everything is fine except for things like ruler traits, dynasties and heirs. They need to work on this. And I'm not alone in saying this.

The biggest great thing about the game is precisely that its using Eu3+xpacks as a base. This means that yes, it will feel like the old game.

I think of its precisely the greatest thing though! Think about it. Typically sequels mean scrapping all previous work and paying all over for the same expansions, like for the Sims. This approach guarantees the last few years of work arent work or sold twice.

Id say, think of this as a big EU3 xpack with a rebranding. Thats pretty much what it is, but its also a good thing, and very much so.

That's good. Then you can focus on making a great game better instead of just reducing a great game into dust and then build a new good game.

Compare CK1 and CK2.

CK2 is more like ck1 than eu4 looks like it'll be like eu3.

Also, don't forget the graphical upgrades, eu2 was 2d... eu3 was barely even 3d and eu4 will be 4d.

Damn, I was hoping EU4 would be a System Shock 2 rehash ><

I just hope most stuff from the expansions is in.

No need to reinvent the wheel.

Everything points to yes.

Bad comparison IMO. This is the very first time that Paradox take a mature title add multiple features on top and rebrand it as the next gen title. This is more like taking Eu3 and its 5 expacs and adding 2 more expacs worth of extra content and a new map, its not a "clean slate" project. By comparison, aside from some research work and text, extremely little carried over to CK2, they essentially built it from scratch.

I Agree
But please don't stop to smooth also the thing that work, and make them more perferct. ;)
