Any technology advanced beyond our level of familiarity can be construed as magic. If you have to research technologies to make orbital unit drops from your previous place of residence while you are on a new planet for each familiar (possibly previously mentioned in the race lore description) unit, I'd say there is some funky magic involved somewhere. It just won't be explicitly stated.

What I meant was that everything that was explained by magic in AoW1-AoW3 would now be explained by technology, but we'd still have the same things (summoning -> orbital drops, phasing -> jet packs etc.). In that sense they are the same, just explanations of why someone can do something special.

Mechanically that's pretty close, although there have been a bunch of changes and improvements.
And we are working on some special sauce to spice things up a bit.

True but some things are different from a flavor perspective in sci fi vs fantasy. Like the AoW system of summoning more or less anywhere doesn't "feel" as appropriate in a dark age sci fi setting. At least not til late game tech. Whereas wizards summoning wisps and crows and junk is like an out of the box thing for a fantasy setting.

That being said not sure what this thread is even about. Every AoW game has had a ton of abilities and strategic options. I highly doubt we're gonna see a decline there. Although we will probably see a shift in focus.

You could summon a lot of things out of the blue with technology. Don't we already have 3D printing? Think what it could do in a few decades.
