Interesting idea. It has a basis on real life, too, with the wake effect and air turbulence. What would you suggest be the minimum separation distance if you want maximum power? I'm thinking about double the height of a turbine... say, 6 tiles? Also, would the separation need to be in all directions, or could one still do strips of turbines?

I'm expecting the wind turbines and wind to get a substantial rework eventually.. right now, it's set and forget power with no worries beyond periodic maintenance. As someone else suggested, have strong/weak wind periods, perhaps even no wind, so batteries are still required for low wind times. There's also wind direction to take into account. If the wind direction varied, then we'd need to keep wind turbines spaced far apart in all directions. Probably take into account nearby buildings blocking the airflow, as well.

Good questions. I like it more complicated so I would like to see the model take into account as many factors as possible. I'm not sure about exact values, though. That would take some research. Strips could still be done with solar panels in alteration. I would also like to see shadow effects on solar panels. More upgrade levels as well could be added so detriments could be offset through technology.

I don't don't think they will do all that, but some compromise with as much detail as possible would be to my liking.

Wind turbine are already too costly to be used for a long time at high difficulty (because of the machine part maintenance cost). I'm not sure you could really alter their balance significantly without making them useless.

The wind turbines are OK.
Exactly, because of fact that they use machine parts.
And about variety - there is some in case of dust storm.
If you want to be real, go out of home. Your idea, request of dynamic produced and calculated wind, and some variety, it could be pin in the a*s when You will imagine poor image of bad luck when 10 Sol in a row there will be no wind, at example on colony start, hm, don't You think?
The game based mechanics have to be usable.

Simple answer, reduce their maintenance costs, or otherwise change them.

Well OK, you could fix the fix if it was felt the entire balance should be redone, but I'd like to understand what is the perceived problem with the wind turbines in the first place. No one is describing a problem in this thread, only requesting a change that looks quite arbitrary to me.

I don't know about realism, I'm more shocked by having domes on Mars, or un-specialized crew in space missions. Anyway, I don't think wind turbine would really work on mars at all given the atmosphere density there, outside of very high winds (dust storms ?).

From a game play point of view, I think it helps create a nice difference with solar energy, which is subjected to the day/night cycle. Having a variation for wind turbines generated electricity would also make them dependent on batteries, just the same as solar.

And I don't see the relation with the original request of having a penalty for having them close together. That sounded a lot like being surprised after having played a different game with a different rule set.
