I bought the game on Steam a couple of years ago and ran it under Windows 7 without problems eventually uninstalling it. A couple of days ago I installed it again, now under Windows 10. It either crashes right at the start screen, directly after loading a save game or after about half an hour of playing, usually when an event screen comes up. I already tried a clean re-install, but it didn´t help.

Edit that settimngs.txt as follows:
refreshRate=60
fullScreen=yes
borderless=no

Also add steam.exe and ck2game.exe to the Exceptions list of your antivirus app.

Don't see a lot else of concern in there, unfortunately.

Does it still do all of these things? We didn't help any one of them?

After such a crash can you start the game right back up? Or you need to wait for a while or reboot?

This does not affect EU4 I assume, or you'd have mentioned that?

The save game that you attached; is that because it reliably reproduces the problem in some way? What do I have to do in it to trigger the crash?

What actual AV app do you use?

Today I installed EU4, played for about an hour without problems. I then started a new game in CK2. Played for 75 minutes, then the game crashes, turning my PC off in the process. I turn on the PC again, open CK2, immediately after loading the game when the start screen comes up it crashes and turns off the PC again. I reboot and open the game again, this time it freezes right before the start screen comes up. The PC doesn´t react to any commands, all I can do is turn it off and on again.

I don´t think there is anything you can do to reproduce the problem, since it seems the problem stems from my PC.

I usa Avira AV. I also used Avira when an older version of the game used to run without problems on the same PC, but under Windows 7.

Sounds to me like a potential overheating issue.

In the opening post you said CK2 "either crashes right at the start screen, directly after loading a save game".
Did you computer run already for a while beofre you started CK2 in these cases ?

Please report the temperatures of your CPU and video (GPU)
1/ before starting the game up and
2/ after say 30 minutes' play.
If your PC's vendor has given you no way of reading temperatures, install
SPEEDFAN http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php

You might be on the right track with it being an overheating issue, since I had problems with overheating in the past. The PC is pretty old already, and the game is running smoothly on my tablet, so I won´t bother with the PC any longer and play it on the tablet.

...so I won´t bother with the PC any longer....

Err..often enough it's really just dust and easy to clean.
I wouldn't give up yet.

But maybe it's not caused by overheating.
To verify if it is or not, the above mentioned temperature check with Speedfan could be helpful, as AndrewT suggested.
