Okay, heres a question for those more experience than I (which means most people)....

I keep reading various posts from people who by the middle of the 17th century are well on their way to world conquest. with impressive reports of military prowess, often with highly ahistorical religion changes to take advantage of benefits such as increased settlers, etc.

Since most of these scenarios fall into the 'very remote likelihood' column of alternate history, and from what I've seen so far (haven't personally made it past mid-16th cent. yet) the game has numerous constraints, e.g., research/development harder with size, diplomatic and other penalties for being too aggressive, etc. So... are these folks conquering the world by altering game parameters, "cheats" or whatever? Or is that the way the game goes if you choose to aim for world domination.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Nothing judgemental implied here, just trying to get a sense of what is possible as I explore the game.

Thanks.

They are playing IGC, otherwise you can't annex major countries. Some countries are easier for world domination. Spain is prob the best. I have never conquered the world but as Spain I had everything but England and a few of their colonies without cheating. World conquest is OK for a break but it is not really the most enjoyable game. Once you get to a certain size you have so much money and manpower you really are unstoppable. Only rebellions are annoying.

domination

I get the impression that you can do world domination within the rules,
but it is as you say ahistorical.
like, the system is deisgned to make it difficult, but it is possible to 'outsmart' the AI and end up with a truly aberrant history.
The only way round this is your own 'morality' as a player..
I find playing with a reasonable ammount of caution you can get on nicely without having to paint the whole map blue.
Trooper has a good point in that it is not an enjoyable game..
The fun is clearly when you have a challenge as to how to survive/expand without treading on toes..

Heretic

Conquering the whole world is just far too easy. There aren't enough, or sufficiently strong, factors causing large empires to break up spontaneously (and even the ones that there are, people complaing about. )

I would agree with this after you get the land tech for consription centers (read: infinite manpower).

I have only played one full campaign, IGC2.3 beta, as the Hanseatic League, so my experience is not that great. Yet, I was able to come on top, without conquering the whole world, or even Europe. At the end, the H.L. was dominant in Germany, economically, and in terms of technology, with a respectable colonial empire (colonies in North America, South Africa, Indonesia, Australia, and Tahiti).

I guess that I got too much into the role, never trying to dominate militarily (actually, only three or four wars in total), but through diplomacy, stealth, and economic penetration.

You don't have to be a military power to be powerful. The League is the perfect example... They can win without conquering too much

Just about any major country is good for world domination. People who do it don't bother wasting cash on diplo-annexation and they don't try to get half a dozen allies to help them.

Russia is good because they have cheap infantry and don't have a lot of common borders with ennemies once they get over the Khanates (basically all that is left stanfing around you by 1520 is Poland, Sweden, Turkey and Persia. If you ally with Persia and Denmark early in the game, you can easyly take care of P-L while the others are fighting. By the time you have annexed Poland, Sweden and Turkey have been so ravaged by your allies (that is, if you were fortunate and Denmark didn't try to attack Turkey  ) that you can annex them without too much hassle. Once you've got all those, you are so strong that nothing can stop you. It's just a matter of rebuilding your armies (read mass infantry!) and you go on again. Everyone starts DOwing you so you keep rolling over them for the next century or so.

It's more interesting to play England in the GC and try it. Recruitment costs (for the army) are the highest in the game, and you want to convert to Reformed to get a combat bonus, meaning you won't have much money between 1548 and about 1650. The goal: by 1700, annex the German states, conquer most of France, Austria, and Spain, all of Japan, China, Persia, and India, have all of North and South America. In the 18th century, take on Poland, Russia, Turkey, and anything that's left. You can't annex the major countries but they will be little more than a nuisance at the end, with one province each.

After that game, it's nice to play one where I just make war when I'm attacked.

well, ive been playing as poland-lithuania, clearly not a colonial nation, and yet, without breaking any rules, ive annexed china, japan, teutonic order, kurland, and conquered cities in netherlands, central america, and africa
its about 1710, im hoping to take over all of south america from spain by the end of the game

next game i think ill play as russia, and try to play a little more "in the role" ie, not attacking and conquesting every other country in sight

P.S. Don't you ever sleep?

Ah thx... not that hard really, especially not as Russia... Just pile up the cheap infantry :)
And yes I do sleep... I was :D
I usually go to bed at around 0.30 :)
Now a little earlier cuz I have a camp to attend (and lead)soon so I better get some sleep.
But most of the time I am on the boards from 10.30 in the morning till 23.30 in the evening :p

I have never tried complete world conquest because I did not load IGC until yesterday. I have decided to give it one go as France and see how it goes.
