Uninstall CK, see thread in tech forum. Defrag your harddrive. Install ck->1.04a->latest beta.

What is a beta

Thanks a lot for your reply but what is "a beta"? I have heard of and use (of corse) patches. But not a "beta", and where do I find such a thing?

Thanks in forward

http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=278 is the public beta subforum. The purpose of it is to involve people in making of the 1.05 patch which is hoped to be released pretty soon. The latest beta patch can be found in the sticky threads in that forum and it is very close to what will be 1.05.

When you installed the patch, did you download it and run it from your Harddrive or did you run it direct from the internet?

Crash-problem

As I remember I took it last time directly from the internet, but I have also haved the patch saved and taking it from my harddisk. Is it something in the regedit I shall remove? I really think I have tried almost anything.

I have noticed that the game 2 times haved crashed about "100 years" in the game (from start Hastngs) but lately it crash almost in the beginning.

Really annoying.

Well if you follow the manual uninstall instructions that are outlined in the sticky thread of the same topic, you will completely remove the registry entries, so when you install it will be the fresh copy of the correct entries.

Also I do not even have that file on my system.

I have same XP crash

I also have the problem where CK is crashing in XP. I've tried all suggestions: turned off anti-virus, did a clean uninstall and re-installed, updated display and graphics card drivers. During game play the screen goes to black, sound continues for a bit and the error message lists a similar nonexistent file that was mentioned, in my case 9f1d_appcompat.txt. A virus check and adaware scan show no infections and I am using a Via graphics chipset with the latest driver.

Okay let's try some standard things.
1) Make sure you have the latest patch for the game.
2) Rename the AVI folder to AVI_back
3) Set the color depth to 16BIT
4) Turn off everything in the background like E-mail/ICQ/Messenger, Virus protection and everything in the system tray beside the clock.
5) Run a Virus check and a Adware/Spybot checker
6) Update your Windows, update your Video card drivers and audio card drivers. Then repeat steps 1-4.

I know you have said you tried most of the above so if it does not help then:
Please run a DirectX Diagnostic:
Start menu –Run - then type Dxdiag, then select each tab across the top of the window, and run the tests on each tab. Then select “Save All Information” button in the lower right of the window. This will bring up a dialog box to allow you to select a name for the file where the information will be saved. You can save it right on the desktop as this will make it easy to find. Then copy the contents of that file from the start to the heading that says “DirectX components” then paste what you have copied into a post in this thread.

DirectX test

Here are the results. If I didn't note this before, I was able to recreate the crash numerous times by loading a saved game. Once the map and scenario loads I close out the opening screen and click "start" to effectively end pause and at that point the crash occurs.
