No idea why it crashed during the save. Can't you just load the last autosave?

Time to start archiving those saves, or get a new freind who does not like HOI. :)
 
I did not mean to diminish the impact to you. There are lots of reasons for a crash though and I would need a lot more info before I could attempt to find the cause.
