We have been busy little bees working on something completely new for Cities: Skylines and now we finally get to talk about it!

Cities: Skylines Snowfall is inspired by the Finnish winter that just seems to last forever. It's all about what we see and feel around us: Snow, ice and cold weather. You get to experience the snowfall, so make sure your citizens stay warm by offering heating, and tackling the challenges of slippery roads slowing down traffic.

People have been asking us to add seasons to the game. However we felt that winter should have it's own theme with unique challenges. This means that winter maps have eternal snow and new features tied to it. You can create your own winter maps in the map editor or play the three maps that are available in Snowfall.

The snow is naturally a very visual feature and we have created quite a few new buildings for the theme. Many of the base game buildings have been varied to fit winter conditions better, so you won’t have flowerbeds or palm trees in your winter wonderland. For modders we'll have more information how to prepare their assets for the snow coming later, but what we can say at this point is that the snow is generated by code and the assets should work with minor tweaks. Roads are also covered by snow and citizens wear winter clothing. Just like in European maps, winter maps have special buildings only available in them. We have also added some weather effects for all the other map themes.

Not only is the winter map about the visuals but there are special services that are available only in this theme. So make sure you clear the roads of the snow and heat up the citizen's home because the temperature is dropping. We'll be talking about these new features and more in a weekly developer diary until the release, so stay tuned!

Are you ready for a gorgeous winter wonderland?

I'm sorry but to refer to the hundreds of thousands of people who enjoy playing this game as "casual masses" is down right insulting.

SC4 is only more complex because it is statistical. It had no active agents; this is the biggest improvement in this game and also it's greatest limitation. This game was built for modding; in fact the greatest part of the development of the game was creating modding tools for an engine that had none.

I am very greatly tempted to respond to your posts in my native Brooklynese, but once again I will try to be as polite as I can.

You offer no suggestions for improvement. You resent personal attacks, yet you call me a "fan boy", yet another snobbish attack from your self defined "hard core city builder".

Yes you are right, this game is not difficult; it is almost impossible to make mistakes. SC4 was better that way. This game was not designed to be a statistical city simulator; it was made, as the title of the game suggests, to enable players to build much larger cities than were possible in SC4. Skylines is the key. Big, pretty cities with big buildings. It's a totally different game from SC4. It wasn't meant to have the depth of SC4. It substituted active agents for the statistical problems that you prefer.

I would hope that in the future elements would be added that would add more depth and challenge to the game. But I am a patient man and can wait. Modders, for whom this game was made, have already added great elements to the game. And I expect more to come.

I think AD added great elements to the game. The bicycle lanes alone were worth the price, IMO. All my traffic problems in the parts of my cities that shouldn't have any disappeared with the bicycle lanes. Leisure district specialization also had great financial benefits. Yes tourism is broke, but that's IMO a minor problem.

Obviously this game is not for a man of your superior intelligence; at least not yet. Give it time.

I'm still trying to figure out what exactly this DLC adds that mods haven't already done.

We have the terrain themes mod that does snow. There are quite a few snow covered buildings already in the workshop.

So this DLC adds what? Falling snow and rain? I'm guessing the snow plows have no real function. That snow doesn't actually build up or do anything. Snow plows function like police cars, and they have the same impact on snow that police cars have on crime.

There is just such huge potential with this game and we get DLC that has no impact on the game play at all. Sort of a shame really.

And I stopped listening to the "we are a small company we don't have the resources" line after we heard for months how the game massively exceeded expectations in sales. So all that money went where exactly? Because apparently it didn't go into adding more developers. Initially I was going to buy all the DLC just to support the developers so they could keep releasing more. But if they are going to spend 6 months to release something that modders have already mostly done, I just don't understand the point.

And apart from all that, I still haven't really figured out this strategy of telling us all this DLC is coming out then not even have a remote idea of when it's actually going to be available. Just wait on it then and tell us when you know.

Cities Skylines is a great game. I have over 1000 hours under my belt. For me it has been terrific value for money. Don't get me wrong, it's far from perfect and has much room for improvement but then that is the same for any product- it has to reach a point where it's ready for launch then various refinements & improvements can be made over time working with and responding to consumer needs. CO do listen and respond to concerns of fans. My real bug bear is the attitude of millennials online- impatience, unrealistically high expectations, instant gratification/short attention span. Comparing a game a few weeks short of its 1st birthday with 13 year old Sim City4 is just crazy. Some of the criticism levelled at the Snowfall expansion is staggering.- all based upon a very short trailer and simple press release! I'm looking forward to the new dlc expansion with cautious optimism. I'm too long in the tooth to fall for the hype. At the worst it looks great- anything else is a bonus! I would like to see some of the most popular mods being included in the base game- that would welcomed. Thanks for a great game.

Maybe, add cable cars for this DLC? It's the best change to add in this the dlc because aerial cable cars are perfectly for winter expansion.

I have also proposition for third DLC - Buildings.

What you do think about dlc expansion including famous buildings around the world? I would like to buy that. :D

Whenever CO or their fans say they are just a small company with limited resources, I just say 'Banished', in which one man has made a very playable survival building game, set in a rural setting.

Have you seen Steam Workshop by any chance? There are tons of famous buildings from around the world over there. For free.

I know, but official building from dlc in my opinion will be better than created by modders. (especially long distance model)

Furthermore, in workshop there are not many famous buildings in good quality (I choosed max 100)

...I really like this game, but more style over substance, as nice-looking as it is, is not going to compell me to build a new city. :(

Spot on unfortunately!!
I'm a great fan, I want CS to do well, but AD had features all over the place and virtually none implemented well :(

You could argue the same about fixes to make the game run better, which modders do in place of CO, but I am sure most of us would rather the problems were officially done before any buildings dlc.

I love the ideal, but my request is not neccesairly 4 seasons but 1 where the map switches from the current summer to winter per half the year or so. I like the ideal of eternal winter and eternal summer maps, but 1 that is half and half.

CO, talking about aesthetics, do you have any plans about the specialized industry?
I mean, the fields are too small to actually look realistic. It would be great if a whole zoned area of agricultural industry could be an urge single field for example.
And mining/oil zones could form a single urge mine/ series of digs.
For me, the specializations is the poorest looking aspect of the game.

CS is young and I hope it will become more "User friendly" through out the time. I guess that decent terraforming tool for example should be implemented in the vanilla game. More official toolbars -》Less mods -》Less buggy. CO could release some "sketches" or rather templates apon which modders can good build. Like some bus stop/metro/train combiner. Extention for asset editor.

The second thing is the actual system and it's timing. Synchronize the "meeting" of buses/metros/trains at the terminal to achieve some kind of efficiency. That is some time saved for travel workers to industrial or tourists to plazas or hotels. Despawning is part of the system yes?

I have to say that i was quite disappointed with After Dark and that this new expansion hasn't really convinced me it will be better.
My biggest issue is that everything in the game just seem to superficial, there's no real depth or challenge to the gameplay.
If the day/night cycle was actually synced up with the timescale it could have been interesting.
If the temperature and seasons were then synced up with the day/night cycle it could also add meaningful gameplay.

Unfortunately it seems like simulation never really was the goal of this game, merely a gamemode for screwing around on a map and painting roads.
Even mods are just a bandaid, and they need to be updated constantly because of steam auto updates which means plenty of good mods are left behind.
And there's also still no support for modpacks, you still have to (de)activate dozens of mods manually every time.

The only saving grace for this game is that all similar games of the last few years messed up even more, the bar was set pretty low.

Thank you CS for making trams! I would also like to see better improvements of cycling infrastructure. For example, to be able to have better access to info of what percentage my city uses bicycles as opposed to other forms of transport.
