Even more new things that come with winter: snow plows and heating.

When it’s snowing, snow will cover roads and affect the maximum speed vehicles can travel on them. Roads fully covered with snow make traveling slower. To keep roads clear of snow, your city needs snow plows that drive around to collect the snow and store it at snow dumps. At snow dumps, the snow melts away with time. When there’s no snow to be plowed, snow plows stay in the snow dumps to receive maintenance, but head out as soon as snow begins to fall. Roads cannot be completely blocked, even when they are covered with snow, vehicles make their way slowly but with determination to their destinations. The amount of snow plows clearing the snow is controlled with the road budget.

New policies allow you to demand elderly people to wear anti-slipping studs on their shoes to increase their health, or make sure cars can resist low snow levels' ill effects by using studded tires.

Temperature is also a factor. The lower the temperature, the more electricity or heating is needed by your city. By default, housing uses electricity for heat. This is completely fine, but when temperatures drop, the electricity usage can soar. For a more budget-friendly option, you can supply the city with special heating service. Heat can be produced either with a Geothermal Heating Plant, or with a Boiler Station. Boiler station produces more electricity but need oil and create pollution. Geothermal Heating Plants are not as effective, but are a safe, green option.

To distribute heat to housing, you need pipes. The pipes run alongside with water pipes. Existing pipes can be upgraded, or new water + heating pipes constructed. Upgrading can be done by clicking and dragging, so there’s no need to click every single piece of pipe separately. When a house is connected to heating pipes, it tries to use heating instead of electricity when temperature drops. Be sure to produce enough heat for the connected housing, or they will revert back to using electricity. To allow housing to use electricity again, no extra effort is needed. If they do not receive heating, they can automatically use electricity. The only downside is that you don’t get the most out of the pipes you built, and electricity for heat is a bit more expensive than using heating. You can also set policies to dictate what sort of heating can be used at certain areas.

For non-winter maps, heating is also present. Rain lowers temperatures, so housing will need heating on all maps. It’s up to you to decide what kind of options to present to your citizens. Just keep them warm!

Three dev diaries and everybody seems to know the complete content. Can't read this complaining any more. Just wait and have a look. Man!

With all due respect, I think you might not be reading the messages thoroughly then. Maybe not all but many complaints (including mine) are directed at things that have already been announced/confirmed. I for one am pretty disappointed at somethings they have confirmed as pretty much the core of the new DLC ( 1- only new and specific maps will have snow; 2- winter is eternal in said maps).

So unless future devs diaries call these off and announce a complete change of plan, I don't see why we should wait to discuss these matters.

I support you! The sim is really shallow right now.

Hi volks! Thank you for more information about new systems included in Snowfall. May I ask few questions? Is snowfall going to include some low density cottages (residential and commercial)? I miss low density european buildings in general although there are some nice style-sets in workshop. A lot of these old cottages are heating with wood or coal but that is not necessary. I am just thinking about the lonely or spread out buildings providing also hotel/restaurant services to ski-resorts atc.

Something I don't quite get it is why mix in ONE DLC trams and seasons (or the half of it), I like both ideas, but I believe they should be implemented in different DLC, and also have each more content to it + fix it's current flaws.

-Transport DLC : trams, trolleys, ferrys, monorails, overground metro, elevated train stations, terminus, hubs, and so on... and traffic!

- Seasons DLC : on all maps have winter/summer in simplified way, or maybe have the 4 seasons, each with it's pro an cons... air conditioning in summer, heating in the winter, when's raining some parts maybe flooded.

Anyway that's my point of view

Basically what most people want.

So many new problems, so few credible solutions. This looks like the perfect expansion pack for Masochists, those who love pain inflicted upon them. Machiavelli would be proud of this new Snowfall addition, so many new tortures to inflict upon paying customers.

I don't believe for a second that heating will be a good thing, that it's just another way to waste money when making money isn't always easy with so many other services to waste it on. I don't think for a second that the new green alternative heating plant will be worth the cost, not when you've got the Fusion Power Plant. Heating looks like another money-burning bust and another headache to waste time with having to adjust the electricity budget as the weather changes.

So far I haven't seen any good new additions in Snowfall, trams will be another poorly programmed public transport disaster and waste of money while doing nothing but choking up roads. Snow and snowplows will also make traffic even worse, yet another cruel joke. What are the good programming fixes? Has the broken Space Elevator and Tourism been fixed when population exceeds 350,000? Did they make high density tourism and leisure buildings instead of the wimpy little low density ones that don't earn their keep? Did they improve the poorly programmed buses and metros and taxis? What good reason do I have to buy Snowfall? So far I see none.

So temperature is a thing, is it possible for it to go above freezing in winter maps and rain also, I feel like that would remove the "why not on all maps claim", or maybe thats just me.

The heating via geothermal plant/additional pipes doesn't scream out "sexy" must have! but rather another dull boring task that seems totally kind of meh. I love the game but surely there are better policies to introduce than studded shoe soles- REALLY? My heart sank when I saw this... worst decision since that other irrelevant distraction and waste of development time and effort- the irritating daft chirpper bird. C'mon guys how about some meaty policies that really do have an impact on the game

heating pipes? is that actually a thing somewhere in the world? i would figure having higher education or higher housing level could have more energy efficient heaters therefore its easier on the power supply. also i have never seen a plough truck collect snow....they just push it to the side of the road and lay a bed of salt behind them to help melt it all...the only time i see trucks hauling snow is when its a normal dump truck and there is too much piled up at the back corner of business parking lots so they move it for safety and such, i was hoping to see the little ploughs going around throwing snow to the side of the road making a nice little snow bank and maybe covering the cims walking by =P, also the road closures from icy roads would be neat, could just add that to the rain maintenance tab to with the trucks. but glad to hear bout rain to, perhaps there will also be storms featured? with high winds that could blow down lower maintained power lines? or too much rain to cause small floods in areas? im excited for trams, cant wait for the first TTC versions to hit the workshop. also can look good combined with train/bus stations, i do hope they arent stuck with roads tho, would be nice having a tram track in the median of an avenue and where that road ends as a T intersection the tram can keep going straight and join into another road, or sit between to normal smaller roads.

Do we have an indicator for snowfall intensity or snow cover importance on roads ?
Does housing have a quality factor regarding how it is efficient heating wise (better isolation and so) ?

Idea concerning heating

Constantly moving the budget slider for electricity to meet the current heating requirements seems quite an annoying task to me. It would be much better if people burn wood and garbage to heat their homes, especially the lower wealth homes (high-wealth homes would have acces to high-tech heating systems that use very low electricity)! And this leads me to the following:

Introduce Air Pollution
  • Heavy industry, some power plants, road traffic and individual heating of homes would generate air pollution.
  • To much air pollution would make people sick.
  • There could be a few new district policies to reduce air pollution. Examples: encourage use of clean cars; ban cars with heavy pollution from districts; prohibit heating with garbage; etc.

Aye, it seems not much fun but unless you use hard mod, there is nothing to be worried about. One can produce much more electricity then needed and still have big income. Coal and wood would be nice as heating resources but I don't find sense in pollution created by cars or residences. I hope that pollution will spawn as cloud of smog in Snowfall or any future updates.

Completely agree with you. In real life we are paying money for Electricity, Fuel (GAS), Garbage (Council Tax) and Transport. So citizens should buy it from the city management / utility / electricity company / gas company (ex: for central heating in house). So introduce variable tax / revenue from the houses from time to time. Ex: In winter more tax depends upon the usage of the fuel. It is something similar to buy happiness in SimCity 2013 Omega Co (buying happiness from big corp).

Lets assume if you travel using public transport, you are paying money for Transport. Similarly if you use fuel during winter it is something for which you need to pay more by default depending upon the usage.

In my humble opinion it would be nice idea.

May be one day I would welcome Cities Skylines : Cities of Tomorrow.

they could also add wind as a factor for it to, so if you want dirty industry then dont place housing on the wrong side of it....
