CK Console DD #2: Discovery in the Crusader Kings Experience

Howdy all! Another week, another Developer Diary

One of the most engaging features of the Crusader Kings franchise is the path of discovery that the user is taken on as they immerse themselves in the unique CK3 gameplay. This is a grand strategy game with an RPG twist as the underlying sandbox nature of the game allows gamers to define their own goals and objectives rather than following a linear path. It’s all about the success of your Dynasty rather than a specific ruler. Dying is not failure... nor is losing wars... the most important aspect is the continuation of a Dynasty through the ages. This can be achieved in many ways, allowing you to carve their own path to power over generations through the use of military expansion, strengthening bloodlines and alliances through marriage, or through the dark arts of subterfuge.

Exercising power during the Medieval period was a complex business and this is reflected in the core gameplay of CK3. Many actions within CK3 require experimentation in order to discover the most successful strategies that suit the user defined goals. For example – starting a war against a perceived enemy requires a number of steps to be completed before war can be declared. This may often involve the acquisition of a Casus Belli (Legal Cause for War), which may require the fabrication of a claim through your head of faith. These steps and other methods of political maneuvering towards are part of the rich gameplay tapestry of Crusader Kings and the route to discovery is a core component of gameplay that should be celebrated and enjoyed when playing the game.

Onboarding for a game with CK3’s level of complexity and depth is a challenge. The PC tutorial has been integrated into the console game with adjustments for the target platform, which will help if you are new to console gameplay coming into the game. The balance is always between giving the community enough information to allow them to play the game vs overloading the user with too much detail. The nature of this title demands that there will need to be some experimentation and discovery along the way, and that’s one of the features of the game that should be celebrated. After all, as stated earlier, having a ruler die or losing a war is not the end of the game... it’s the beginning. Securing your Dynasty over time is the main objective, but there is also the flexibility for the user to define their own objectives and paths through gameplay.

What would you like to see or read with CK3, compared to what the other PDX titles are doing?
Your feedback can help us redirect efforts & resources.

In all seriousness, talk to the Stellaris team! They had similar issues a few years ago where people were frustrated at a perceived lack of communication, but now, I think largely everyone is extremely happy with how they communicate.

I'd say it's mostly down to transparency, honesty and constant communication.

It's totally fine to say:

- "No plans to do that right now"
- "There's currently nothing for us to share on this"
- "We're aware of the issue, we're looking into it"
- "This is something we're considering and thinking about, nothing concrete yet"

And things like that. It often makes people feel at least like they have acknowledged requests / concerns.

I'm not a Console player, but if I was, this developer diary doesn't seem particularly useful to me. It isn't really giving any new information that isn't obvious from the PC version.

Maybe it would be better to just pause these until there's more to share?

100% agree.

This community really devolved into a bunch of entitled kids. Downvoting the console dev diary just because you want more content for the game on PC, really?

It could also be console players downvoting because it was an absolutely useless piece of fluff?

I feel pretty qualified to go on a rant here, as I game exclusively on console. I've played exactly one Paradox game so far, Stellaris for Console. I really enjoy Stellaris, and I've seen that CK3 has received very positive reviews in the PC gaming press, and so I naturally find myself interested in CK3 for console. But, after reading the first two console development diaries, I find myself less interested in the game, and less optimistic that the console port is going to be good.

The first two developer diaries have told me absolutely nothing. No screenshots of the new console UI, no discussion about changes made to adapt a complex game and make it controller-friendly, and no details at all on any of the game mechanics. This DD says that the tutorial is coming to console, but that's not useful information because of course the tutorial is coming to console.

Useful information would be telling us whether the tutorial has been improved. I read that the PC tutorial glosses over or completely skips some of the game mechanics, which seems like an obvious potential area where the console tutorial could be improved. Especially as console players are less likely to have played CK2 or even be familiar with this genre of games.

I urge the CK3 team to take a look at the Stellaris for console developer diaries - they were often "rehashes" of PC developer diaries, but updated with screenshots and descriptions that were accurate for the console version. They provided a taste of what was coming, and introduced console players to game mechanics that we could start to try and wrap our heads around. They were interesting, useful, and increased my interest in the next patch or expansion.

Seems like the CK3 team could learn a lot from them. Keeping my fingers crossed that things improve from here.

At least in the PC game, it is a pity you don't stand by your own words. A long life full of children is almost always guaranteed and the player can easily pick the wars to paint the map his/her own colour. Gameplay suffers dearly in the end. But in the PC at least, we have the possibility to mod the game to our heart's content!

Don't forget about the 'rich gameplay tapestry' involving finding the most successful strategies and series of steps necessary to declare war with a variety of casus bellis, tough there's no real reason for any of that since you can just click the fabricate claim button and wait a little.

Or go down the learning tree and then buy claims for piety

I'm a PC player, but I love CK and could have one day a reason to buy on console (because my PS4 is more powerful than my laptop or because I would like to play CK3 while comuting thanks to the Switch), but for that I need to know how it play, and need info on that. How do you click, what are the buttons etc...
Just because other interested readers might want to know and it seems you aren't aware - CK3 console is only coming to PS5 and Xbox X/S. There will not be a PS4 or Switch version.

I'm not sure if this is the correct place to ask but will CK3 be playable on Xcloud? I couldn't find any information about it. But i assume it will since it's a part of gamepass.

As the official image indicates, the Console Version of CK3 is only available for Series S/X.
