CK2 Dev Diary #105 - Clergy Interactions Revamp

Hello, everyone.

Today we will be talking of a nice quality of life update to the interface, AI behavior and some new additional flavor regarding the Papacy (as well as any similar religious head that has access to these interactions, such as a Reformed Pagan High Priest with Hierocratic Leadership).

The patch coming with Holy Fury will place all Papal Actions in a more easily accessible list of icons, right under the portrait of your religious head in the Religion screen.

Furthermore, the behavior for all these actions has been un-hardcoded and fully scripted, so the Pope is now much more sensible when deciding who he wants to Excommunicate, and less restrictive when considering the possibility of granting an Invasion casus belli to an ambitious ruler. More importantly, players are now able to see exactly why their religious head is denying them a request.

The AI logic itself has been considerably expanded and tailored to the various actions.

Having a vassal Pope no longer ensures that all your demands will be automatically accepted, and having an independent Pope will not make it near-impossible to get a favor from him. The Pope will take into consideration Opinion, Piety, traits, the specific circumstances (such as divorcing an infertile wife), and the amount of controlled Cardinal seats when deciding whether to accept a ruler’s request or not. Piety costs for these interactions have also been rebalanced and tied to the ruler’s tier, making them more accessible to low ranking rulers and costlier to Kings and Emperors.

The Request Claim interaction has been given a special new interface as well to make it more intuitive and accessible to players. Rather than having to search directly for the title that you wish to gain a claim on, you can use the new button in the religious view to get a list of potential Catholic rulers owning titles for which the Pope is willing to grant you a claim on. By clicking on any of them, you will be shown a second window showing the list of all titles owned by the target ruler and from there you can select the one that you are interested in.

Finally, if you are Excommunicated, the Issue Declaration of Repentance decision has been revamped so that it is no longer simply a cash payment.

Much like when requesting a coronation, the Pope will now pick one out of several possible demands for the player to fulfill in exchange for the lifting of his excommunication. Requests can range from a show of contrition causing Prestige loss, to changing your realm laws, to give one of your sons to the Church.

Also, bonus Cardinal clothes, pre and post 1245:

A few things I noticed while looking at this picture.
1. (This might not be news to you) It seems like Kievan Rus is now an Kingdom tier state from the beginning of the 1066 bookmark.
2. Wales have gotten more Petty Kingdoms at start, one of which might be titular.
3. What seems to be a new duchy symbol in Bavaria.
4. Brittany starts as a single duchy, despite being composed of three duchies now. This means France can still Force Vassalize it as it usually does, but Brittany now has the ability to maybe form the Kingdom in time to save itself.
5. A new (?) single county between pagan Obotria (Obotritia) and Denmark (Edit: Not new).

Edit:
6. The independent duchy of Duklja seemingly has been upgraded to the Kingdom of Serbia.

Being married to a sibling will make it very easy to request a Divorce from the Pope, but it's not a necessarily a certainty. If you have a very bad ruler or the Pope really hates you, you might still stack up enough negative modifiers to not get the divorce.
Will you get a malus in this case if your religion has divine blood?

What about hellenic religious head's name?

I like how fashion changes through time now, I wish we'd had more of such!

Me too. I also see the Late era for graphics has been changed to 1245 instead of 1200. @Silfae , What about the other "graphical eras" (Early and Middle)? Did they change too?

1. I wish we could see if the other Rus' realms are Kingdom tier now, or still Duchies.

3. I think that might be the Coat of Arms of Styria.

It hasn't. The Cardinal clothes use a specific layer. The cutoff is 1245 because that is when the galero was introduced historically.

No change to the notification as of now, though that is something that could be done.
As for consanguinity, there are two modifiers, one for far relatives (25) and one for close relatives (40).
Consanguinity was a great general purpose reason for divorce, even coming in when the two weren't that closely related, but "she's an faithful who're who I caught in the kennels" wouldn't be politically acceptable to the wife's family.

"We're more closely related than we thought, so the marriage must be annulled" is at least on the face of it politically neutral...

Will the Shattered World and Random World work with the EU4 Converter?
Of course they will, the converter is already creating dynamic tags for nations that don't exist in EU

How will Pagan Reformation affect the converter? For example; will a Reformed Hierocratic Suomenusko Independent High Priest get the Papacy government in EU4?
I'm a bit too lazy to look back for the answer, but when the reformation mechanic were introduced, the answer could be summed up as "it won't do anything". The converter is just going to convert your religion to it's EU equivalent without regard for what kind of doctrine and bonus you chooses.

Talking about clergy, it would be fun if some type of anti-caliph mechanic is added, to represent the creation of the Caliphate of Cordoba. Maybe any muslim king or emperor with the Sayyid trait should be able to do it, if the moral authority is low or something like that.

Any hope for making the college of cardinals and cardinal elections less micro intensive?

Like maybe a cardinal election fund pool that remains after each election

I'm curious where you got Chernoban from. I'm not entirely sure on the meaning of the word, but I am positive "cherno" is black and it makes the whole name come across as a bit odd to me.

I believe it means something approximating "Black Lord".

It's probably a reference to the god Chernobog, who was a slavic deity. "Black" in this context probably doesn't mean evil or sinister, but Christian sources interpreted it that way.

Plus, it makes it sound like your character is channelling Sauron or something, which is kinda dope.

Great now just please fix the regnal numbers for the HRE and please give some love to orthodox, coptic, and nestorian.

Shame. But if there are no extra mechanics added to it to ensure its dissolution on death, I could see why.

I was kind of hoping that some changes would have been made to Tanistry to allow for such a system.

I think that the best way to simulate the High Kingdom of Ireland would be through new mechanics. Each duke would have a stat based on his prestige divided by age, and would increase when most pious or prestigious actions were taken. If this was high enough, he could take a decision to "Claim the High Kingdom". Based on the other (Irish) rulers in Ireland's opinion of him, they would either join on his side or fight against the attempt (or have no war at all, if everyone likes him enough).

The catch is, when the High King dies, if no one had a high enough number of this new stat, the realm would splinter again. If someone does, the person with the highest would gain the title, but all dukes who disliked him would have an independence revolt. Another tricky feature is that going to war with any other Irish duke would make this stat decrease, and the lower this stat, the less other Irish dukes like him.

- Will Catholic (or whatever the relevant faith is for a given rel head) Monastic Order members get any bonuses to papal (or whatever) interactions?

- Not right now, though that is a nice suggestion.

I'd argue against this, because Monastic Order members most likely already have more pious traits and will thus be viewed more favorably by the pope. I don't think an extra bonus will be needed.

Cardinal clothing! and they also change in the later centuries, wonderful, the HF surprises keep on coming.
I'm so glad that Papal interactions and AI behaviour have been improved, thank you. Am I alone in thinking that the 10 piety cost for divorce is still very cheap compared to the other requests? I feel something like 25 piety would be more appropriate, but no more than 50.

I'm not certain, but I think I remember "Chernobog" having a secondary implication of "God of the Earth", as contrasting with "Dazhbog" (Bright God, or Sky God).
