CK2 Dev Diary #110 - It's not a bug.

The Bugs of Holy Fury!

Holy Fury development was a long and winding road, and along that road were, believe it or not a few bugs. Let me tell you about some of them.

Emperor Assassin
This one is a personal favorite of mine. Upon adding the kill list to track character kills we noticed that, the Chinese Emperor had the most kills. Upon further investigation we realised he was getting the credit for an event where a Chinese Noble is assassinated by China. So the Emperor was personally sneaking into their room at night and strangling them with a piece of silk.

Escape Armour
When we added the new battle events, a wonderful new event was added where it is possible to throw down one of your artifacts to distract your opponent when you run away. Unfortunately/ fortunately this included the armour you were wearing. The mental image of you slipping out of your armour on the battlefield is wonderful. Infact this bug was so good we made it a feature.

Imprisoning everyone

Using some fun commands and curiosity one dev managed to imprison everyone in the world. Unfortunately unpausing the game would cause the whole thing to crash, who would have guessed eh?

Confused Pope
The Pope is annoyed if you go on the fourth crusade but even more annoyed if you don’t show up. I guess the pope despite his best attempts just can’t resist a crusade.

Hairless animals
Animals entering the barbershop would crash the game since they “lack hair”.

UI-scaling
Implementing UI scaling was as simple as flipping a switch, our coders didn’t have to do any work at all.

Great Strength
When duels were getting their upgrade, it was implemented so different weapons would be used including bare hands. Due to some variables not being set up yet this led to people consistently severing limbs with their bare hands.

AI problems
The AI, just before winning a crusade decided to set their crusade beneficiary and who better to benefit from the crusade than their 80 year old syphilitic, non-dynastic aunt?

Thanks for reading!

Does that mean that getting credit from people dying in our dungeons is also a bug? (since we never actually personally kill said people).
Come to think of it - what about people we order executed?

I always thought it was more kills we were responsible for - so if he orders said nobles sent to the service of the ancestors, should he not get credit?

I like where this is going - why not count all of the soldiers killed in battle too ? In my last war I was directly responsible for the death of maybe 5,000 people, not counting civilians slaughtered after sieges.

Better yet - give that guy what's his name, "Black Death", full credit for all the kills he's caused. :D

:p

And this, folks, is why we can't have nice things. :)

Or maybe, it can lead to nice things...

DLC confirmed.

The collection of bugs from prior versions is funny and all, but I'm pretty sure most people on here are more interested in patch notes for the upcoming patch. We would like to know first and foremost what bugs are being fixed and when.

I imagine if you did certain things that would be illegal in Olympic wrestling or even MMA that you could cause enough internal trauma that medieval medicine wouldn't be able to save the limb. They're not meant to bend certain ways after all, and bones coming out are a bit of an infection risk. You'd certainly have to "win" a bare-handed duel to do this, but it's not completely out of the question.

For a recent example, take the Alex Smith leg injury from US football. Bone broke through the skin on that. Maybe your 21 knowledge court physician who just cured consumption and gout back to back could do it sometimes, and there's always dark healing. But it's not unreasonable to lose an arm/leg to this at least sometimes :).

Medieval fighters weren't as strong/heavy as NFL players, but the force necessary to cause this sort of injury is much less if you're actively trying to cause one. Ruining a limb or killing someone bare-handed is well within this game's plausibility, it's stuff that can actually be done in contrast to some things the game allows :).

Holy Fury development was a long and winding road, and along that road were, believe it or not a few bugs.

Are you going to do anything about the bloodline ambition event where you try to reform the legal system of your realm and one option cranks up the revolt risk by 35%? I don't think the game is improved by having a choice that can lead to 5 new peasant rebel armies every six months for two years. The only thing I can compare that option to is The End Of The Cycle in Stellaris, and even then there's a clear warning not to pick that.

In ck2 even bugs tell a story.

Agree, strong characters should be able to tear off limbs and smack their opponents with them.. Just joking

I actually scrolled through the replies checking to see if someone had already said something similar to this. XD

Seriously though, since we're keeping the other bug for the lols, could it be made so that severing a limb with your bare hands is possible if you have the strong trait AND if the difference in the final result of whatever RNG happens is great enough?

Would it be too much to ask to have this classified under "absurd" events?

Weren't you supposed to have fixed the Pope? Unfortunately he is as unpredictable as ever and randomly excommunicated people. Even when they have repented

Then you must not have repented HARD enough!

For some obscure reason I haven't been able to use the forums smoothly for the last couple of years, despite changing my PC, OS, browser, ISP, even country, so I can't use quote functions and agree/disagree fails more often than not, so please pardon not referring directly to what people said; I don't even know whether this post will show at all. I need to express agreement with those posters who are not amused by serious immersion-breaking bugs that border on game-breaking. Just because there's no CTD doesn't mean stuff like BYZ heir going republican or Charlemagne being unable to form the HRE isn't game-breaking. Let's not get back to the old days when such bugs had to wait months to get a fix all the while the head guys at Paradox were giving interviews saying they were satisfied with the state of the game. A lot of progress has been since then, so let's not waste it.

Just to be clear, the bugs in the OP are certainly funny, this is one of the most rewarding DD's ever, and it's great we can all share a laugh about and that the devs are able to laugh at that — I wish more people had the self-distance and lightness of heart. But let's keep things in perspective and not get too much distance from the need to actually fix the bugs in the DLC.

Grate DD, grate DLC (first one i preordered), grate job guys and girls!
Now I'm reading EU4 DD and asking myself: "is it the same paradox?" "Is really CK2 this ugly older sister of EU4?"
Thanks for your grate work CK2 team. :)
I beg your pardon. CK2 is the beautiful one. :D

But the last sentiment is correct.

Would someone care to explain why most of the new DB changes are so lacking and broken?(...)

These things just seem to happen with the biggest expansions/changes. Especially when lots of new provinces are being introduced. I don't think it's Paradox' intention for any of these things to break or be wrong, some things just slip under the radar. It was similar after Raja's of India. Lot's of database issues. Some were solved pretty quickly, some took longer, but I don't doubt Paradox will be interested in sorting any issues out.

If you haven't already, you'd do well to report these database issues in the bugs forum so Paradox knows about it. If after a patch or two things are still looking wrong or irking you, database issues are one of the easiest things to mod and correct yourself. I know I had a fixes mod active on Steam for a few months after Raja's to fix some issues I'd seen.

I need to express agreement with those posters who are not amused by serious immersion-breaking bugs that border on game-breaking.

Patience, patience. I know we're all eager for a patch, but we're barely a week out from the release of one of the biggest expansions ever made for CKII. It stands to reason that it may require a big patch too and mayhap it's going to take a little longer than usual.

I'm content to wait. When have Paradox ever let us down with patches for CKII? They always get a good patch in after every expansion. It's coming. We may not yet know how soon, but it is coming. When the devs have something to announce, I'm sure we'll be the first to know!

I just came back to CK2 after a few expansions away and I love how the last few expansions really feel like a big cohesive whole. Plus a lot of the annoying small balance issues are way better now! Artifacts, societies, new religious mechanics, and new events really make me feel like my characters are real people living out history in a complex world.

My one big complaint is that secret societies are still too easy to grow and way too difficult to crush. Neither the intrigue focus nor using your spymaster to spy on someone triggers the discovery of their secret faith nearly often enough, and while my court priest does a pretty good job there's only so much they can do.

Can there be flavor events regarding the court jester, court cook, and court minstrel? Also events regarding characters with honorific titles.
