CK2 Dev Diary #111 - Until Next Year

Hello all,

It has been a wonderful year for CK2, and I hope you all agree. A lot of work was put into Holy Fury which from the reception seems to be time well spent. We are not quite ready to talk about the next year but when we are you will be the first to know. We will now present something with no further comment.

Happy holidays, we hope you have a great winter break and we will be back next year.

It's a Red Panda, so....
Pandas are a symbol of China, but they're black-and-white; so obviously they're hinting at an economic overhaul wherein a bankrupt China will be a major problem for the economy.
(Bankrupt China = in the red = red panda)
And Victoria invaded China, and wars are associated with both bankruptcy AND blood, which is also red. Which MEANS...

...Victoria III confirmed.

Who the hell buys such a detailed and complex medieval strategy game and thinks the experience could in any way be augmented or improved by adding daft animal portraits?!

The whole Furry thing really is beyond me....i'm guessing it's some sort of millennial thing that i'm too old for.
I disable all those weird events and play with HIP. I'm an historical puritan. A pox on your Glittered Hooves and Furry Freaks!!!!

A long, long time ago CK2 (or CK if you will) started off as just another epic medieval grand strategy game. Somewhere along the way PDX realised that the real experience of the game was the interaction between its characters and the player so over time play has become more and more "experiential" and flavor driven. Not everyone may agree with this, but this is what differentiates CK2 from say Total War or Mount and Blade.

I for one am a huge history buff and love playing with as much realism as possible, but every once in a while I also love playing in a medieval monk's wet dream or drug induced fantasy - Satanists behind every rock, a real life Death who stalks the living and challenges them to games of chance, worlds that never were or may yet be and any infinite variations on the same starting conditions. What will happen to us if the ERE falls ? What if the pagans reform their faith and invade Christendom ? What if a mythical race of cannibalistic devil worshipers arrives from across the sea to plunder the west and lead us into a new blood soaked Dark Age ?

I am good with all of that because so long as the fantasy is medieval fantasy then I am good. If PDX were to add space aliens or time travelers then I wouldn't be so keen, but jousting rabbits on racing snails ? Why the hell not - I just want to know what combination of drugs and or mulled wine convinced that unknown monk to add that picture to his manuscript !

Enjoy your well earned leave! Thanks for the hard work this year on the game and looking forward to what you have to offer next year! I'm torn between expanded Animal Kingdoms, China Expansion or Victoria III! ;)

Sorry to ask a question that may already been answered but will the hotfix (3.0.1.1) be released in "not beta" version before Christmas ?
And i love the panda's clothing . Anyone have an idea if it is chinese or persian/tibetan style ?

I do think Paradox will be in trouble making CK3 because they cannot release the game without most of the existing CK2 expansions. At least, I will not rebuy all the DLC

Or at least, they need to rename CK2, I would propose CK3 = Sons of Fur(r)y

That's 10 years of development, let's hope the new Paradox CEO won't disband the CK2 team. Or maybe she has been taught how to play Russian Roulette or Duel properly in CK2 ???

I get where you are coming from. OTOH, no one will be asking you to purchase or replace a decade’s worth of DLC at once. When and if CK3 is released, the DLC for it will be released over time, just like with CK2. So while I understand not wanting to spend $200 again on a game, I am afraid this is the future of many games. There is no way for these companies to survive without a continuing source of revenue and there’s are limits to how much any game can be improved without eventually moving on to a new version and starting from base again, no matter how painful that may be.

Look at the positive side, I have been dumb enough to get into a couple MMOs on my iPad. I spent more on each of those two games than I have spent on CK2. However, I got less playing time, way less enjoyment, and when the game lost steam it disappeared along with the money I spent. Having bought CK2 and it’s DLCs, I will have them so long as I DL them. If I don’t want something in the future then don’t buy it. And if Paradox goes away I still have the game. So while I get why people don’t want to drop $100s on games again and again, Paradox is one of the more reasonable companies out there in a world of companies that are no longer very reasonable. Then again, YMMV.

Thanks for being the legends you are Paradox and i am looking forward to seeing what the new year bring. Happy holidays and happy new year to the community and Paradox.

Do you know when you can fix the bug with children being born to their mother's dynasty if the father dies? It is really annoying and has almost caused me to get multiple game overs.

Either announce naval combat, or pack up and start working on the next project. It was promised that this would be the last DLC quite a while ago.

Oh my, such confidence. Do provide a single source to back it up.

476 DLC when?

Do not make the next dlc a lazy dlc please
I'd like to see a big DLC that fixed performance and revolutionizes Holdings and counties and the feudal system in general to make it feel more medievalish
We need new holding pictures as they've grown kinda lame while Byzantines got the new handsome ones
All I feel that could be expanded is heresies. A Hersey DLC with randomly generated and historic heresies would be rad.

I do. Don't like it? Don't use it.

Maybe a new random world generator aspect, where cultures are represented by animals. To allow playing CK2 in a world full of different animal species that each have their own culture (Horse/ Panda/ Bear/ Cat/ Whatever). :)
