CK2 Dev Diary #112 - Wonderful News

Good afternoon

It has been a while since we wrote one of these and I am sure you are all dying to know what we have been working on, because of course, we have been working away on the next exciting thing. Our next update will be free and will focus on a brand new feature: Wonders.

Cathedrals, Fortresses, Pyramids and many many more wonders are planned for the next update. By investing a significant amount of gold and time you will be able to build a wondrous building. These will be built in stages meaning that even if you cannot finish it in your lifetime, your descendants will be able to finish what you started.

Wonders and their stages

Now even though many Cathedrals or Great Libraries may be built, we want to ensure they are not all the same, so it will be possible to add upgrades to your wonders, everything from spikes to gargoyles, to gardens, each of these giving unique modifiers and sometimes unlocks new content.

Upgrade Icons

We will also be adding some prebuilt historical wonders to the game, to represent already existing buildings, such as the Pyramids of Giza and the Colosseum of Rome. (Maybe you can even add an upgrade or two)

If you have fun ideas for any of this please let us know. I can’t promise it will get in, but it just might.

We hope you’re as excited about this as we are and please remember that all the art is work in progress.

Out of pure benevolence, and not at all because I want things that would adapt well to anything I'm working on at the moment, here are some suggestions:

The bridge over the Hellespont
A many-towered citadel or fortress (Camelot, or the sort of thing that Neuschwanstein was imitating, or that Viollet-le-Duc ended up creating at Carcasonne)
A great catacomb
Definitely the Great Wall / Hadrian's Wall / the Limes
If there's going to be a Blood Altar, maybe put a ruined one already extant at Carthage, for the Tophet?
The Sainte-Chapelle (only buildable by a Catholic who owns the Crown of Thorns)
A great feasting-hall (Heorot)
The Alhambra
The Great Mosque of Cordoba
Colossal Buddhas
Maybe combine the Third Temple in Jersualem with this? Have a basic Tabernacle level that equates to the existing event, and allow the player to expand on it with outer courts and the like
A great lighthouse (Alexandria's is famous, but Dover's is still standing)
A great harbour, with possible improvements including a defensive chain, as at the Golden Horn
Sprawling monasteries

This is definetly something I want to know; because, and especially with a rich immortal, i would hope you could have more than 1 per realm (just heavily disincentivized due to cost and build time) simply because if you build one and it ends up being a "meh" thing, being unable to start a different one would suck.

Or just being a new roman emperor and saying "screw it, wonders for everyone"

Just please not limited like it's a "bloodline but for realms", bloodline founding sucks enough once you inevitably have an immortal
See my comment above.

Hoping for a project for high tech empires to make their capital have walls equal to the Theodosian walls. (also possibly upgrading the Theodosian walls even further for the memes)

Also just gonna bust this modified quote out as a joke:

"Fleshed out Egyptian paganism instead of adding Great Schism flavor events because we understand our fans enough to know that they would rather restore Dynastic Egypt and praise Amun than worry about dumb shit like one of the most important events in the history of Christendom." - AsaTJ (Holy Fury Patch notes and what they actually mean)

It would be pretty cool to make Muslim or Pagan equivalents to St. Peters or the Hagia Sophia; perhaps it could be tied to important cities so that you can't build a super temple in the middle of the desert or tundra.

Also liking the idea of modifying wonders, converting a superchurch to a mosque, pagan temple, or vice versa would be pretty interesting. Perhaps certain flavors like iconoclast removing icons from a church or other Christian branches that permit icons to adorn a former iconoclast church with icons.

Could we also upgrade our castle as well?

Will there be a wonder/upgrade to wonder to increase number of holdings in province?
I mean, it should as a wonder would mean extra pilgrims, trade, influence and development... as well as a way to develop old starting province into a new thriving economic center.

Wasn't planned but a cool idea, I'll look into it.

Can I rebuild the Alexandria Library? Is it possible to collect books from realms all over the world to improve the quality of the library? Please add events that piss off the the church and zealous characters. I think CK2 is about the stories we tell, it would be great to have realm instability or foreing wars tied down to stuff you do in the game (like going around collecting heretic books).

Since we are talking about sciene. How about star observatories and "great" Universities?

And I hope that building libraries and Universities doesn't necessarily piss them off (certain upgrades should though). Reformation has yet to happen after all.

I don't want to pursue the tangent too far, but I've posted several times recently about features that would boost both Christianity and classical paganisms, such as conciliar/ecumenical mechanics and improved collegiate elections. These things don't have to be in tension; having the Pontifex Maximus try to harmonise Hellenic and Kemetic paganism, and having the patriarchs try to save Chalcedonian Christianity, could be the same mechanic.

Fun Idea: When the Aztecs invade, it's often mentioned in events that they build great pyramid temples where they sacrifice thousands to commemorate their victory over the nation they have defeated. Could be quite cool to see these temples if it's not too trivial to add.

Please make another thread so we don't go too far offtopic :) Thanks!

If the Pope gets rich, could he try to make his own wonder in Rome? Gotta spend the charity funds on something!

I love this idea! Not sure its in our scope but we can see.
