CK2 Dev Diary #112 - Wonderful News

Good afternoon

It has been a while since we wrote one of these and I am sure you are all dying to know what we have been working on, because of course, we have been working away on the next exciting thing. Our next update will be free and will focus on a brand new feature: Wonders.

Cathedrals, Fortresses, Pyramids and many many more wonders are planned for the next update. By investing a significant amount of gold and time you will be able to build a wondrous building. These will be built in stages meaning that even if you cannot finish it in your lifetime, your descendants will be able to finish what you started.

Wonders and their stages

Now even though many Cathedrals or Great Libraries may be built, we want to ensure they are not all the same, so it will be possible to add upgrades to your wonders, everything from spikes to gargoyles, to gardens, each of these giving unique modifiers and sometimes unlocks new content.

We will also be adding some prebuilt historical wonders to the game, to represent already existing buildings, such as the Pyramids of Giza and the Colosseum of Rome. (Maybe you can even add an upgrade or two)

If you have fun ideas for any of this please let us know. I can’t promise it will get in, but it just might.

We hope you’re as excited about this as we are and please remember that all the art is work in progress.

So here's a crazy idea. What if, if you have a character that is a lunatic or so other trait that could be similar, possessed or what not; you could build the Tower of Babel? Realistic? Of course not. Would I disprove the existence of the monotheistic gods with my possessed, lunatic, Pagan Roman emperor? Hell yes.

Is there going to be bonuses based upon your culture and regime and personal history in the game regarding the speed or cost of building a particular kind of wonder? Like a bonus from completing idea groups, say, the quality line may grant a bonus to triumphal arches such as the Arc de Triomphe or the Brandenburg gate. Also this may be a dumb question, but can you name them yourself? As much as I love Prussia, I do not want a ‘Brandenburg gate’ in Tokyo or Delhi.

Some crazy ideas that I got

-A colossus, in Rhodes, Rome or Constantinople.
-Transforming an insular county into an Atlantis-like structure. Venice or Crete seem like the best candidates.

And some less crazy ones:

-Bagdad is has a lot of options, there are the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, and the Taq-i Kisra of Ctesiphon.
-There are a lot of egyptian temples to be built, specially on Luxor, Aswan. Alexandria has the Soma (Alexander's tomb), the Pharos, and of course, the Library.

A Greek/Roman hellenistic ruler may have the interesting choice of making syncretic temples in Egypt. Perhaps a couple of temples to Serapis or Hermanubis? (I find the idea of an anthropomorphic jackal with winged sandals quite amusing)

I want this so much.

Bonus: with supernatural events, when it is nearly complete (during final construction stage), chance for an event which flips all your courtiers to random cultures? : P

If you convert your realm you should be entitled to build a great Cathedral, perhaps partly sponsored by your converter.

This seems like a really good feature, especially flavourwise!
Hopefully the smaller and less known countries get some love as well!
Speaking of, some ideas from the perspective of Serbia ( but not localised just here)
1. A general monastery complex ( e.g. Mount Athos, Solovyetsky Island, Fruška Gora and Ovčar-Kablar monasteries in Serbia, the more spread out monasteries of Kosovo), and a special one for Metheori in Thessaly! And perhaps a fortified monastery one similiar to Manasija. Catholicism could also get similiar Monasteries and Abbeys ( e.g Cluny)
2. A palace complex, but possibly also special summer and winter palaces which were a thing in many countries ( e.g. Serbian rulers had a lightly defended but beutiful summer palace complex in Nerodimlje despite the capital not being there)
3. Restoration of formerly great Roman/other ancient cities and palaces (e.g. Syrmium and Mediana here)?
4. Large mines in areas those existed- most of medieval Serbia's wealth and power came from our gold and silver mines. Similiar things were true in Hungary and Tyrol. Perhaps even Salt mines like Wielicka?
5. Something for the Slavic holy island of Arkona/Rugen? In general the Pagan religions should have their own wonders

Here's some stuff I think should definitely be looked into:
  • Update the build a hedge maze and laboratory events so they last?
  • Skull thrones and Blood Fountains are pretty obvious.
  • Mongols should get to build a temporary skull pyramid when they sack great cities (could even be on the map)
  • The Aztecs should clearly be able to build their own style pyramid.
  • Integrate the Patrician Manors?
  • The Aurelian walls.
  • Murcury rivers like Qin.
  • Integrate Rune Stones?
  • Integrate the Kaaba?
  • Build a great ship burial for the norse.
  • The Maha Bhodi temple.
  • Integrate Irminsul?
  • Integrate the hole to hell so you can show it with it's cow filled glory.

Will it be possible for a Norse pagan to build a great temple like at Gamla Uppsala? Or a major ring fortress or maybe improve on the Danevirke even more?
