CK2 Dev Diary #112 - Wonderful News

Good afternoon

It has been a while since we wrote one of these and I am sure you are all dying to know what we have been working on, because of course, we have been working away on the next exciting thing. Our next update will be free and will focus on a brand new feature: Wonders.

Cathedrals, Fortresses, Pyramids and many many more wonders are planned for the next update. By investing a significant amount of gold and time you will be able to build a wondrous building. These will be built in stages meaning that even if you cannot finish it in your lifetime, your descendants will be able to finish what you started.

Wonders and their stages

Now even though many Cathedrals or Great Libraries may be built, we want to ensure they are not all the same, so it will be possible to add upgrades to your wonders, everything from spikes to gargoyles, to gardens, each of these giving unique modifiers and sometimes unlocks new content.

We will also be adding some prebuilt historical wonders to the game, to represent already existing buildings, such as the Pyramids of Giza and the Colosseum of Rome. (Maybe you can even add an upgrade or two)

If you have fun ideas for any of this please let us know. I can’t promise it will get in, but it just might.

We hope you’re as excited about this as we are and please remember that all the art is work in progress.

Not excited at all. All we want are bug fixes. This will just introduce more. Read the bug forum please.
no. bug fixes are not all we want.

Just to add my two cents...

I very much support the idea of having some sort of wonder for a Zoroastrian rebuilding Persepolis - when I do so I like to rename all the holdings to be certain districts and wonders anyway so this would be perfect for me :p

In the same vein I really hope the Third Temple gets the same treatment, and Irminsul would be neat too (even a chance to plant a new one if the old one meets an unfortunately historically accurate end).

I really hope that existing and special wonders are reasonably spread out rather than being all clustered in Europe, with so many suggestions I'm sure you guys can find a good balance :)

A personal favourite of mine to suggest would be the Palace of Diocletian in Split; in the true spirit of a wonder it's been continuously modified and adapted to suit the needs of its time to the point where within its bounds so many other wonderful buildings beside the palace itself can be found. Perhaps a ruler could emulate this, or go hard-line on rebuilding the palace as a fortress or their own grandiose abode.

Another idea I had, which while likely a stretch, would be to be able to actually build a great lodge hall for your warrior lodge, similar to suggestions for other society-focused buildings. That and/or dedicating wonders to holy societies and orders - that castle the Jomsvikings get could instead be a unique longhouse for instance, and the Teutonic Knights' headquarters is often regarded as a marvel of architecture.

OK, that was closer to a dollar than two cents :p Thanks for such an unexpected but pleasant surprise!

Never underestimate those ducks... ;)

Ahistorical pyramids that develop by historically plausible means is one thing. Accounting for the level of authority and wealth as well as the specific religious identity necessary to make a pyramid seem reasonable is a whole other. This is somewhat goofy.

So, doing some thinking on stuff that could be included or used as a basis for things built the world over instead of just one specific province that I didn't see while glancing over the thread:

Hanging Gardens of Bablyon
Rebuilding Palmyra
New centers of heresies
Aqueducts
Blood Cathedrals
Sprawling Metropolises (both "good" and "bad")
Cult bases
Observatories
Mass agricultural projects (sprawling vineyards, orchards, fields, etc. ala why Champagne is a region and Champagne is a wine)

I have many wishes and suggestion. Here are some:

Religion:
-Celtic Paganism
-Roman Paganism
-Arab Paganism
-Egyptian Paganism

Time Line: maybe ~400 to ~1600

Map:
-Add China, Korea, Japan, Southeast Asia
-Add Greenland, Vinland
-Add Simbabwe and Central Africa

Culture:
-Cultures of the new map regions
-Tuareg, Icelandic

Skins:
-Skins of the new map regions

Government:
-Play Theocraties and Republics, maybe with Merchant Republican Mechanics.

Others:
-Maybe disasters, like volcanos, asteorides, flood, storms, etc...
-Disabilities like Down Syndrome, etc.

-------------

-Religion creation
Option to create you're own religion.
Maybe you can be the prophet of you're own religion with the same mechanics like pagan reformation.
So you can create an religion without modding ingame.

-Syncretic religions
Maybe if you are Hindu, and you are secretly Sunni, you can reform the Hinduism and create the "Sikh"-Faith.
Same with Pagan Religions and Christianity (Arianism).

-Culture syncretism
Option to create you're own culture without modding.
An example:
If you are german, but you mother is polish, and you are ruler of an country with polish majority, you can mix the german and polish culture and
you can maybe create Silesian culture. Or mixture between Scottish and English, Berber and African, Indian cultures, etc.

That's only an few of my ideas. Maybe you can add some of this.

I thought that pagan religious wonders could maybe also something that could be focused around artefacts or something. Temple of Gjallarhorn or Temple of Sampo for example. And not all religion specific artefacts would have templewonders, for example Temple of Mjolnir might be a bit silly since Mjolnir is weapon to be used.

EDIT: Could it also be possible to add more artefacts for pagans other than norse, since slavic, romuva, suomenusko, african and tengri only have one major religious aftefact.
Also also, would it be possible to make it so that you don't have to everytime build a new observatory when you pick scholarship focus with the next ruler. I think it's silly that if the father or grandfather built an observatory and I pick scholarship focus again I have to build a new one when the old one should still be standing, maybe in need of renovations, but standing. Same with the secret labs of hermetics. So I think these wonders and upgrades could help with this issue for sure.

There is some event chains that let you build gardens, ancesters monuments and similar stuff. However, they all get destroyed when your character dies and the next takes over. Could you guys makes them permanent? I wouldnt even mind if they take now several generationes to build, as long as I get to keep them forever.

(Btw, that bug that makes pregnant widows give birth to bastards of her dinasty and not legitime heirs of her husbands, can you fix it? thanks. Congrats in the 7th aniversary too. Great game :D)

I could see those events spawning wonder foundations that subsequent generations can expand on. They'd provide fairly minor bonuses at first, of course.
