CK2 Dev Diary #112 - Wonderful News

Good afternoon

It has been a while since we wrote one of these and I am sure you are all dying to know what we have been working on, because of course, we have been working away on the next exciting thing. Our next update will be free and will focus on a brand new feature: Wonders.

Cathedrals, Fortresses, Pyramids and many many more wonders are planned for the next update. By investing a significant amount of gold and time you will be able to build a wondrous building. These will be built in stages meaning that even if you cannot finish it in your lifetime, your descendants will be able to finish what you started.

Wonders and their stages

Now even though many Cathedrals or Great Libraries may be built, we want to ensure they are not all the same, so it will be possible to add upgrades to your wonders, everything from spikes to gargoyles, to gardens, each of these giving unique modifiers and sometimes unlocks new content.

We will also be adding some prebuilt historical wonders to the game, to represent already existing buildings, such as the Pyramids of Giza and the Colosseum of Rome. (Maybe you can even add an upgrade or two)

If you have fun ideas for any of this please let us know. I can’t promise it will get in, but it just might.

We hope you’re as excited about this as we are and please remember that all the art is work in progress.

Neat idea. All ideas that span generations I think would bring a lot to the game.

Would be cool if religious flavored wonders would tie in with character pilgrimages and their events.

For example, you can create a cathedral/mosque/temple of such magnificence that it becomes a potential pilgrimage site.
Or on your way to the holy lands, you pass by a cathedral/mosque/temple under construction in some neighboring kingdom and decide to donate towards its construction, in return for piety, prestige and maybe relations bonuses with the lord that you are helping with the construction.

(Not sure if these ideas have been brought up already)

I really, really, really need a Game Rule for that or i'd have to disagree with 98% of all posts in here and i'd prefer not a "probably", but a "definitely" as an answer.
Just my feelings towards this.

off-topic: I would have prefered the sale to last a bit longer. Seems i missed it. :(
Though if you had patched the biggest bugs by now, then i had made use of the sale right away...

This looks cool! Will they take up a holding slot, though? Perhaps they should take up the Fort or Hospital slot instead.

I like the idea of a Catholic Emperor conquering Egypt, seeing the Pyramids, getting envious, and building one of their own in their own capital (without knowing their purpose, of course).

I get that Egypt is the first one that tends to come to mind for pyramids, but there are a bunch of cultures that built them, and several of those are already in game (or the one DLC I don't have) so they don't seem like much of a stretch. Especially with the one event for lunatics.

This sounds cool and all, but can we also make it so holding portraits aren't totally weird if another culture converts the province. I mean, if you have vikings in egypt, for some reason the vikings are still building wood houses that look like they're in scandinavia.

When is this patch going to be released? Is it in a few weeks or more like a few months? It is a really nice update. Also will they take place in the interface where the hospital and forts are?

General suggestions:

Wonders could have bonuses tied to their builder's religion/culture but could be "refurbished" under special circumstances as well.
Wonder interactions: This goes without saying for grand tombs (i.e.: burial events). Pillaging or destroying could also be good, on top of their expected uses.

Wonder suggestion [some interactions]

A Grand Obelisk [re-chisel/deface = bonuses for the converter] [stolen (technically feasible by land or water)] [astral/society-related event]

A Great Library [steal books = tech points for thieves] [research(++societies events) = tech points for owner] [burn = soft "reset" for knowledge stored] [grow] [forbidden books (++societies events) = "necronomicon", "scientific breakthrough", "alchemical discovery" etc]

A Great Pyramid [make sacrifices] [entomb] [call from the god(s)] [plunder tomb]

An Edenic Garden [many interesting and definitely not boring things] [grow fruit of everlife] [create plague] [create cure for plague] [bury (plants resembling/emparting wisdom of the dead) [new religion takes root (pun intended)] [carnivorous plants grow (good or bad) (relate to the fruit of everlife maybe? human/animal sacrifices?)] [a grand harvest] [foraged by enemies] [a great drought]

A Grand Mausoleum [ghosts of ancestors events] [ghosts of random people/animals events] [plague-related events (could be used as a retreat against the plague for the lulz)] [animated corpses/skeletons] [labyrinth of the damned]

That's it for now, I'm going to bed. : D

P.S.: Say what you will about other Paradox games and the way decisions go for the worst, but CK2 has always been rock-solid and won a special place in my heart straight from (and before) launch.

What problem do you have with this feature?

Why do you even ask ? Pyramids in medieval times (for instance) for a start ??
World Wonders ?? What is this as a game ? Civilisation nonsense ?
I want a Game Rule, not asking to not do it, i wonder why several people seem to have an issue with even that.

I get the Civ comparison, but Civ didn't invent wonders. Wonders are a fact of life.

There are already conditions as to who will build pyramids, which i presume the ai will never meet.
Other wonders, from fortresses to cathedral will probably be more up your alley.

The game rule will probably split the normal from the "unlikely " wonders.

Edit: and a second game rule for the time needed to build the wonders.

The Pyramids?
I made a joke about this earlier but I don't think people got it. If you are a Lunatic and you get the hunting dog event, when your dog dies you get the option to dedicate a pyramid to him or her. I suspect this is where you get to obtain a pyramid wonder, rather than some kind of Kushitic restoration.

I have been thinking about how canal wonders might work.
In most it would be as simple (hard) as allowing for the creation of portage links between two provinces while the game is running.
However something like a Canal of the Pharaohs would probably require removing ocean_regions as the way separate the Atlantic/Mediterranean and Indian oceans in favor of something more dynamic. It could probably be done using a flood fill algorithm with an on call update whenever a major changes happens to the map.
