CK2 Dev Diary# 22: Quarantining the bugs

Hello all, it’s time for another CK2 development diary. We’re still working on making 2.6.2, and while of course there’s some bugfixing going on, for the most part we’re just adding bonus content. Which is fun!

We are working in a strict priority order, so naturally the first thing to be added was more pet events:
catdog1.png

With the vital stuff out of the way, we moved on to more of The Reaper’s Due’s core focus, mortality and death:
yay bodies.png

We’ve also added some new game rules, such as making regular illnesses less common if desired, keeping prisoners in jail after torture, or disabling titles being named after dynasties or changing due to the culture of the holder.

There’s not much else to show at the moment, but there’ll be more next week. For something else to talk about now, I can reveal some of the new statistics data we’ve been getting about RD and the gamerules.

Of the 50,000 players in the last 24 hours:
90-95% of RD players are using the new Death sounds and have ingame sound on.
96% of players allow the AI to use the Intrigue focus.
92.6% of players allow the AI to use the Seduction focus.
93% of players have kept assassination plot only.
84% of players have Defensive pacts on.
76.3% of players have Shattered Retreat on.

Right now I can only see the numbers for default settings or not, but that will change as our stats people make newer and fancier graphs, and these seem like the most interesting stats for now. Next week, more new 2.6.2 content news!

Please explain these two.

Patricians at Baron tier without any holdings except the family mansion are not able to search for a court physician. The decision does not exist.
Same goes for going into seclusion. The decision does not exist.

It only becomes available when the patrician manages to become doge of the republic.
The only way to get your own character in seclusion is being in your liege's counsil when the doge goes into seclusion. The rest of your court and family stays out in the streets.

I have no information about patricians who managed to conquer another holding than their mansion.

Did the physicians die when your character died or just any time ?
Unimportant (and unmarried) characters in your court get killed, when your character dies.

The pruding mentioned in dev diaries recently, allegedly only hits AI courts.

Since many patches ago I also got the impression that random characters in my court get killed off by the game and are made to die easier and quicker than any other,
irrespective of my character dying, but no idea if true or perception error.
It is said it were a perception error, but i'm sceptical.
Sure i am..

My physicians died all the time. Until I started marrying them to said relatives I was not able to have a physician longer than a year, usually they died within 3 or 4 months.
And when I invited 5-10 holy men to get at least one able to be the court physician, the other 4-9 died within a week. Well, I do not know if the really died, they were just no longer at my court or somewhere else. They just vanished. I only got information about their death when I wasted time assigning them as counsillors. Prolonged their lifes for a month or two...

Funny note: because of this (no physician and no ability to get and keep one), I had a character who was sick (was it a flu? Or dysentery?) for 20-30 years. He died of stress at ~60. Poor guy...

You;ll need to clarify what you mean about factions actually having a chance to win for me though.

What I meant is that factions will often fire too soon, before they can actually gather the necessary strength to have a real chance of winning a rebellion. And therefore they will never really represent an alarming threat against players who know what they're doing.

Also, faction strength will strangely display a number that will not correspond to truth, I believe. Therefore 150% faction strength, in reality, means a lot less than one would expect. I am not sure if this needs to be fixed.

As a final note, it would be much appreciated if vassal/demesne limit rules would become more flexible in the future, for I and some other players would really enjoy a little less late game realm stability - just as I am sure there are those who would prefer vassal/demesne limits to be more forgiving or generous.

Thanks.

Only 7% have returned to paid assassination? I jumped at the opportunity.

So did I. I also turned off the diplomatic distance option, so my children can marry ...anyone...anywhere... :eek:

I'm not sure why you wouldn't have them, when I start as a barony-patrician I have both the decisions:

Edit: Aha, turns out we fixed them this week.

@Darkrenown
Do you guys have plans to add anything to the game rules that will make empire management a little harder ? Options such as vassal limit changes, Pre-ROI factions system, factions firing when they actually have a chance to win a rebellion etc.

I would like to see greater stability in mid-size Kingdoms, and less in massive Blobs (Byz, Umayyads. Abbasids), from the AI. And in general, for less realms to go Elective and stay like that for centuries.

Slightly surprised that more people use CK2+ than HIP.

I love using the Ibn Battuta's Legacy mod. (The collective data Paradox is gathering should help them see which areas need improving.)

I am legitimately surprised that anime portraits is only 1.66%.

There are days where I feel like /r/crusaderkings just turns into /r/animecrusaderkings.

@Darkrenown

Also entirely unrelated but has the Saoshyant Descendant event oversight been added to the list?

And by oversight I mean the one where the event that gives children the Saoshyant Descendant trait only fires if the kid is under 2.
Max_age = 2 has lead to at least two players that I've seen gain Saoshyant only to have none of their kids(all over 2) not gain the Saoshyant Descendant trait.

Really if a player gains Saoshyant at the right time and fails to have a two year old afterwards they could entirely have a Saoshyant followed by an entire dynasty in which no one has Saoshyant Descendant.

From oldgods_zoroastrian_events.txt -

Code:
# Children gains Saoshyant Descendant trait from Saoshyant
character_event = {
    id = TOG.6001
    hide_window = yes

    max_age = 2
    has_dlc = "The Old Gods"
    has_global_flag = saoshyant_appears

    trigger = {
        OR = {
            mother = { trait = saoshyant }
            father = { trait = saoshyant }
            mother = { trait = saoshyant_descendant }
            father = { trait = saoshyant_descendant }
        }
        NOT = { trait = saoshyant_descendant }
    }

    mean_time_to_happen = {
        days = 1
    }

    immediate = {
        add_trait = saoshyant_descendant
    }
}

Was it meant to minimum age 2?

I assume max_age = 2 is to prevent it spamming every character in the world every day, but this really isn't the best way to do something like that, I will see if I can rework it.

Edit: It has actually already been done!

I'd like to make an option or something. When we first added game rules I wanted to have one for it, but game rules are applied after rulers are designed so it wasn't possible.

This is what happens when bugs get reported. Although a lot of minor bugs slip through the cracks or even reappear after other changes. The QA team does a great job with this. Although I hope I can continue to eat half my dynasty when I close the gates, without getting the kinslayer trait. Need to get rid of those gluttonous claimants somehow.

Pacts and shattered retreat should disable achievements if turned off.

They are hated by an insignificant minority of players (compared to how much of a "majority" they seemed to claim) and achievements should really feel like achievements.

Like the new plagues letting them turn off that option and miss achievements is already generous enough. There will always be a subset of players whining about making an already easy to blob game easier for themselves, we should really discourage that for balance's sake. It's just not fun being a vassal count while your friend picks some country bumpkin in Finland, and you basically never even have a chance to compete as they get all the EZ mode CBs with nothing keeping them in check.

Disagree, they shouldn't change the effects of turning off the DP just becouse you say so. They did a good job giving us the option to turn off DP and SR, I hope the won't ruin it by disabling cheevos when someone decides to turn those options off.
