CK2 Dev Diary #25: Man vs Machine

What’s this, a dev diary on a Monday?! Yes, it’s true, we’ve moved them to Mondays so they’ll coincide with CK2 streams. The Reaper’s Due has been out for a while now, and I am very pleased with how both it and the free update were received (I wasn’t sure the focus on Death would be so universally appreciated!) As Game Director, I rarely have time to do much coding and scripting anymore, but I did help out with the optimizations and several of the Game Rules. The game is in safe hands though; the current CK2-team has done an amazing job so far!

Work has now commenced on the next expansion and I can already reveal it’s going to be something a bit similar to Way of Life, which I believe I actually mentioned in my previous dev diary. I also promised optimizations, AI improvements and quality of life stuff. Well, the optimizations are done for now, so the next major free update will feature AI and GUI improvements, which brings me to today’s topic; usability.

Now, we are aiming to tweak several interfaces and while I cannot go into much detail yet, I can say that I’d especially like to address the following main areas:
  • Plotting (quality of life)
  • Prisoner management
  • Guardian vs Educator (clarity)
  • More space for Traits and Character Modifiers
There are other things in the works too, but when you’ve worked on a game for so many years you tend to get blind to many usability issues and simply accept them as they are. That is why I’d like to hear from you, our faithful fans, what you find most annoying and clunky about the CK2 interfaces. Are there any actions you find hard to do, or useful information you cannot easily find (or not at all)? All feedback is welcome!

That is all for now; the floor is yours...

Don't miss today's livestream - Medieval Monday with Emil and Doomdark - 16:00CEST on https://www.twitch.tv/paradoxinteractive

Was "filter out *out of range* characters in the character finder" already mentioned? That would certainly make life easier!

I'll echo all of the calls for a "Ransom All" option since it is tedious to go through 20 prisoners and individually ransom or release prisoners that I gain through wars.

I'd love to see more plots than fabricate claim, revoke title or kill plots. Like embezzle plots, accuse "so & so" of heresy, & fabricate treason plots.

That's because you can directly get to any de jure duchy or kingdom screen from the province view, but there are extra steps to get to the empire (get to the kingdom, check 'de jure' then click the empire shield).

Now that the whole map is covered in de jure empires it would make sense to have a quicker way to get to them.

Thank you sir. This is exactly what I would have written had I remembered. Now I don't have to check tonight!

Hello, sorry to be the silly question, but translating all about with google, I want to be sure to have understood.

So it will be a free update and then a new extension?

Regards,

Not a UI improvement, but I wish that non-religious marriages were always allowed to neighboring lands. It would not exactly be unusual for a count in Bavaria to sell off a daughter to a Bohemian chieftain to insure safety.

When you move an army onto a ship, it shows the date they will board. But when you move an army off of a ship, it doesn't show the day they will move onto land. It's caused quite a few headaches in some of my viking games.

Would be neat if vassals within a faction in the Factions tab were arranged from strongest to weakest. Quite often you want to neutralize (imprison/kill/etc) the strongest one and looking for them is a real chore (especially if there are dozens of them).

With every extension there's a free patch. I think it's safe to assume UI changes are patch material.

I bet that a lot of people don't know where you can build forts, hospitals and trade ports. This problem was made clear
by the fact that quite often people, who played Reaper's Due, didn't find tab where u can build hospitals. Because of that
you guys should

1) ether make button for holdings' screen/tab switching more visible or

2) change 2 screens/tabs into 1 single screen/tab, where you can build new castles, forts etc.
Also please add:

3) Button for arranging marriages for all of your courtiers who are single and aren't royal family
(ether only between your different courtiers or by creating new characters for marriages)

4) Button for ransoming all prisoners who could pay that ransom.
Both of those features are in mod known as HIP and I just love those features. Sadly both of those activities are quite tedious in current vanilla build.

When an army advances to a county, it is shown its arrive date there. However, if I set its path through more than 1 county, it won't show the day it'll arrive at the last county I chose as their destination. Is there a possibility to add in the tooltip both times to arrive - to the closest county in the path and to the last one?

For me, the really important things are a "load as many selected units onto ships as possible" button, the way we have a "load single selected unit onto ships," a "filter out of range characters" option in character search, and a "ransom all" button for prisoners. (Or even a switch you could toggle that would automatically ransom all characters from outside your realm that don't provide you warscore.) Quite a lot of the other suggestions on this thread would be really great, too, but those are, for me, the really important ones.

Tip: The realm tree is great for this. I think you can look on your opinion of characters to see if they are in a faction and it is sorted on strength. Not that your idea doesn't have merit.

Make it possible to set a notification when a battle involving your or your ally's troops have joined battle. I hate having to deal with a war on more than one front where I turn my attention to one side, only to get a message that I lost a battle on the other side of the country and all of the troops in neighboring provinces just stood around picking their noses because I didn't know about the battle and wasn't able to order them into it.

Auto-conversion, akin to auto end plot but allows you to convert any willing person who reaches the opinion threshold.

It would be nice to see a scroll bar added to all interfaces. For modding especially, we could really use something like this for the Merchant Republic's houses to enable us to have more houses show up organically.

I'd like find character to have a filter for "is not heir", possibly as a subcategory of "is/is not ruler". and/or "is not married to someone who has land".

Also, a subset of "find my dynasty" that filters out women of my dynasty that are in a marriage that will result in non-dynastic heirs.

(basically I want the ability to find characters who I can give land to and have some expectation that it won't immediately join up with other land or leave my dynasty, and it can be a pain currently, especially in a cognatic realm...)

An option to ransom, banish, release, humiliate, execute, etc all prisoners in your prison at once. Going through many prisoners can take up a lot of time.

Saving different settings in the character finder so you can swap between different settings more quickly. It gets tedious switching between different search queries.

A notification of your current treaties and when they will end, not just treaties that are about to end.

A notification for when you can change a realm law. Presently you have to manually keep track of the dates.

A notification that you can declare a crusade/great holy war/jihad. Presently the only way to check is to try to declare war on somebody.

Denying all marriage/betrothal proposals, or set it per character, or only close relatives. It can get annoying to be spammed with offers.

It's relatively simple, but cumbersome, to land a claimant then press their claim. It would streamline the process to keep them as a subject if their claimed title is of lower rank than your primary title. It also doesn't make a whole lot of sense to allow a vassal independence after doing all of that work for them. While this can be considered a gameplay change, I also consider it quality of life change due to the ease involved in finding land for someone to press their claim: by the time you're large enough to be pressing ducal claims (which are the most common useful ones) it isn't very hard to find a county or barony somewhere to stick the claimant.

I would like to see religion play a more important part of the game. Excommunication never seems to happen, the higher level rank you are as a Christian should dictate how important your relationship to the Pope is, lower level rulers should have to make sure to maintain good relations with Archbishops (For Dukes) and Bishops (For counts) in order to stave off the Pope thinking about excommunicating.

In other words I'd like to see a DLC focused on making theocracies more interesting.
