CK2 Dev Diary #25: Man vs Machine

What’s this, a dev diary on a Monday?! Yes, it’s true, we’ve moved them to Mondays so they’ll coincide with CK2 streams. The Reaper’s Due has been out for a while now, and I am very pleased with how both it and the free update were received (I wasn’t sure the focus on Death would be so universally appreciated!) As Game Director, I rarely have time to do much coding and scripting anymore, but I did help out with the optimizations and several of the Game Rules. The game is in safe hands though; the current CK2-team has done an amazing job so far!

Work has now commenced on the next expansion and I can already reveal it’s going to be something a bit similar to Way of Life, which I believe I actually mentioned in my previous dev diary. I also promised optimizations, AI improvements and quality of life stuff. Well, the optimizations are done for now, so the next major free update will feature AI and GUI improvements, which brings me to today’s topic; usability.

Now, we are aiming to tweak several interfaces and while I cannot go into much detail yet, I can say that I’d especially like to address the following main areas:
  • Plotting (quality of life)
  • Prisoner management
  • Guardian vs Educator (clarity)
  • More space for Traits and Character Modifiers
There are other things in the works too, but when you’ve worked on a game for so many years you tend to get blind to many usability issues and simply accept them as they are. That is why I’d like to hear from you, our faithful fans, what you find most annoying and clunky about the CK2 interfaces. Are there any actions you find hard to do, or useful information you cannot easily find (or not at all)? All feedback is welcome!

That is all for now; the floor is yours...

An "embark all" button would be nice. Basically a button which will apply the "embark" command to all armies for which this is possible. So you select your entire army, press this button, and it is the same as manually clicking the "embark" button for all individual armies.

It's just such a chore when playing as the Byzantine Empire or Scandinavia to manually embark every single army when you want to invade somewhere overseas.

Two suggestions :

  1. I'd like to have suggestions when I pick the Seduction focus. Right now I need to search manually or through the "search character" panel, which isn't automatically actualized.
  2. Heraldry needs a rework. Right now, the colours are not very representative of the ones that were used in the middle ages, and the shields could be way bigger. Look at what Arko did with his Arkopack (which is used in Historical Immersion). The shields on the map could also be made bigger, county shields in particular are very tiny, especially for christians.

I actually am not a fan of how the Way of Life foci work. I think it is too restrictive. Only allowing you to do one thing at a time and locking everything else out. I think it would be worth making an option that does the following: your character can always do the most parts of the foci, choosing one to focus on makes you better at it and unlock more advanced things. Something I would like added to the game is a Ward-hostage mechanic. So if I defeat someone in a war or rebellion then I can take their children as ward-hostages in order to ensure obedience.

Please please please add an option to pardon people's "crimes" so the imprison notification will go away. Sometimes I don't care if my super strong vassal/best friend vassal did something rude, and sometimes I'm just not in a position to do anything. Add an option to forgive them so I can't arrest them because mods have had this for ages and it adds a bit of quality of life

You still can. Use the de jure kingdoms map mode, and hover over the kingdom you want: the tooltip tells you whether they have regulated inheritance or not, for example. That's how it used to be before Conclave too iirc
Didn't know that, very helpful. But this is really something that should be improved as well. Perhaps hovering any title should reveal its active crown laws?

I would love some added dynasty features with the following:

Only show dynasty with a certain trait (for instance decadence)
Only show dynasty members where people from the line still live
Only show dynasty members where people from the line hold a title.

Please do something about how threat is calculated, do a holy war in the Middle East and the freaking Scandinavian countries put up a defensive pact against you. At least in EU IV where this idea was ported from takes into account distance, culture, and religion in the calculation

Also some sort of indicator telling you how much threat will be generated towards a particular group by a given conquest in the declare war dialog would be nice as well.

Edit:

While I'm asking for things, perhaps a relative strength of an alliance view? Especially when the entirety of Christendom is listed as joining against me it would be nice to see how many troops they will be able to collectively field in comparison to myself.

I spend a lot of time managing my court in the game, and while you can go to the find tool and search for characters in your realm, I would love filters in the court list itself so I could find that particular ward or courtier I had in there! The new event popup for hired courtiers is great, though when you're saving them for later it would be good to have an easy way to reach them quickly again. Some nice things to be able to filter by would be age, marriage status, of your dynasty, has claims, etc.

'Has a Claim' filter, yes!

It has one though? Or what do you mean?

What he meant was this:

Hey,
In the character search window there are only green and red "hands" while it would be nice to have a yellow one as well, similarly to "invite to plot" window. It would come handy especially for those playthroughs that has diplomatic range turned off and enhanced invitations on.

Or, visually:
https://postimg.org/image/ufjfwj2yp/8dc38c3a/ - The yellow hand in window 1 should exist in window 2 as well.

I'd really like a "Load Game" button for the main menu during a game in progress. Resigning and then clicking through the "Game Over!" screen and the following menus takes a long time. I realize this is not a simple UI change and that the functionality is likely to be more complex, but still!

YES! Please, add this!

Also, I have other suggestions as well:
http://s18.postimg.org/bnq05th2h/20160926090026_1.jpg - the 'Our Claimants' tab in hte Ledger should show us the person with the claim AND the title window instead of just the title. Also, it would be nice to group up claims of the same type (strong/weak), as also people with claims to the same title.

http://s14.postimg.org/k1bcytd8h/20160926090821_1.jpg - See the hover pop-up. It should show us data about their strengths regarding tactics and against which other kind of troop it ios strong/weak (i.e. Heavy Infantry is good at Melee; strong vs X and weak vs Y)

My top three would be:

- When handing out landed titles I'd like some way to use the map to make things easier. It would also be nice to have something like the 'create vassal' option for county level holdings that you do for baronies.

- "Ransom all" button; enough said.

- I don't have a recommendation to fix this issue off-hand, but it is an annoyance I have. In games where there are a manageable number of children, the childhood/education focus stuff is fine, but things get very annoying when playing in realms with more prolific rulers. I reach a point where I feel I'm spending way too much of my time clicking those damn focus windows.

New Feature: Alarm Reminder!
I wish I could manually set a timer (multiple timers and repeat features would be more appreciated) with a small side note to remind me things.
E.g: 01/01/1044 "Dont forget to change the law"

Improvements on current features:

-Bigger windows.
-Hotkey for expand province window button.
-Improved Ledger Topics.
-Cardinal Interface!

Having to assign commanders about almost every month, scrolling all the way down the list of minor titles gets really annoying!

1) Font Options (Different fonts, font sizes/scaling). Maybe even a individual font settings for tooltips, events, and interface.
2) I we can't get number 1. How about some why to magnify text.
3) Interface scaling - On higher resolutions this should reduce the amount of scrolling.

THIS!!!!!!

1000000000 X THIS, PLEASE !!!

-decisions out of the intrigue panel. Being able to toggle alerts for hunts, feasts, etc.
-Plot panel pretty much similar to the faction panel. (Plots are basically private factions)
-Improved court interface showing people, ranks and relations.
-improved economic map mode showing the wealth of provinces and the taxes (and troops) of your vassals.

I'd like clicking in the scrollbars above or below the scroll button to move up or down one 'page' at a time - i.e. if you're looking at a list in the ledger or find character windows for example, you should be able to travel through the whole list, not missing any, by repeatedly clicking in the scroll bar. This is the normal way in Windows and I find it very frustrating to try to look through these lists in CK2.
I's also like all the windows to be moveable. Most are, which is great, but when I'm trying to investigate marriage options, for example, I often find the character action list popping up and obscuring the character sheet I want to examine. So I have to get rid of the action menu and then go through a bit of faff to get it back. If I could just move it that would be great.

Can you split the minor titles tab into two tabs? I hate having to click that checkbox or scrolling to find my commanders. Maybe put commanders in the military tab?

And add a different icon for when you can Appoint a new Commander - perhaps a Helmet with a Crest. I'm going to stop the game to look for a new Regent, Heir or Physician but a Commander? That becomes 'Look at my basket of mediocrity for someone to risk killing'

More obvious warnings when you're about to do something tyrannical.

The problem is that there's only a little icon to alert you to the problem if you're going to, say, declare war against the council's wishes. Even red text warning you won't help much, as there's often red text accompanying holy wars and wars against rebels. Plus, those of us who have been playing since 2012 are prone to simply sticking to our old playflows.

An actual alert window popping up to confirm whatever action we want to take (with controls to refine when/if said alert window shows up) would help.

  • It would be nice to save the set of filters on the character finder. I always use the same search when giving out land or looking for geniuses to marry, for instance, and having to change the filters each time adds a lot of clicks.
  • Some character actions generate pointless pop-up messages that don't have any decisions associated with them. In particular, if you use "Demand religious conversion" or "End plot", you will get a notification when the person agrees. This is something where you really only need to hear about it again if the person says no. Marriage/betrothal requests have this problem as well.
  • When looking at a title you can hover over the flag and see the line of succession, which is nice, but this really needs to be a set of links to the actual inheritors. Especially because names tend to get reused within a family or culture, it can be hard to find the right person. I've definitely married the wrong Pepin Karling and thought I was all set up to get France...
  • When right-clicking on a portrait, the list of options is very hard to skim. E.g., even knowing that I want to retract a vassal, I usually need to look through the list a few times to find it. It may help to break the list into subsections by type, either with small headings spacing out the options, or with different background colors for the different types (or both). For instance, all the options relating to feudal rights (grant/revoke land or vassal) are red; WOL, marriage, and religion options are green; council and honorary title options are blue.

Please add an "expand" button in the children, siblings and vassal session so that when I click it, it would open a mini character-finder list showing their traits, opinion, money, troops and where their crown foci are (in the case of landed vassals). I also want to filter the would-be guardians of my child by education trait/level, and the children of my court by their education focus.

The disease map mode needs something to mark the starting province of a given epidemic. It should show a province's level of hospital as well.

It'll be nice if I can select multiple prisoners and chose what to do with all of them, including different incarceration modes. Imagine a particular pious Aztec duke who just want to please the gods as much as he can offer...

Please make the AI character have some proper memory about what I did to them. I mean, I devoured my mother-in-law during the plague and my wife was totally okay with that. Any known murder of a patrician family member should have resulted in a blood feud between the two families (which also need to be shown in the republic tab as well).

Please replace the Hajj and Ramadan decisions for the Yazidi. I know they need a way to survive decadence but it's just inaccurate.

Please improve the intra-faction mechanism. I am the vassal that held half of the Byzantine Empire and practically can just send the Basileus run tail between legs but I came voiceless in factions led by some one-county strategos. I should have been the decision maker.
