CK2 Dev Diary #25: Man vs Machine

What’s this, a dev diary on a Monday?! Yes, it’s true, we’ve moved them to Mondays so they’ll coincide with CK2 streams. The Reaper’s Due has been out for a while now, and I am very pleased with how both it and the free update were received (I wasn’t sure the focus on Death would be so universally appreciated!) As Game Director, I rarely have time to do much coding and scripting anymore, but I did help out with the optimizations and several of the Game Rules. The game is in safe hands though; the current CK2-team has done an amazing job so far!

Work has now commenced on the next expansion and I can already reveal it’s going to be something a bit similar to Way of Life, which I believe I actually mentioned in my previous dev diary. I also promised optimizations, AI improvements and quality of life stuff. Well, the optimizations are done for now, so the next major free update will feature AI and GUI improvements, which brings me to today’s topic; usability.

Now, we are aiming to tweak several interfaces and while I cannot go into much detail yet, I can say that I’d especially like to address the following main areas:
  • Plotting (quality of life)
  • Prisoner management
  • Guardian vs Educator (clarity)
  • More space for Traits and Character Modifiers
There are other things in the works too, but when you’ve worked on a game for so many years you tend to get blind to many usability issues and simply accept them as they are. That is why I’d like to hear from you, our faithful fans, what you find most annoying and clunky about the CK2 interfaces. Are there any actions you find hard to do, or useful information you cannot easily find (or not at all)? All feedback is welcome!

That is all for now; the floor is yours...

In the people search function, please add the ability to search for traits. Given the education system its a huge pain to search through everyone in your realm to see who has the right mix of offsetting traits for the person you're trying to educate
You can. Just type in the trait.

I regularly run in observer to see how the world works out. This probably isn't an interface improvement, but since I usually use the console, could you possibly have a proper observer mode that can be used in single player where you can play god add and substract traits as you please.

Not sure i understand, but you can already pause anytime, start to play a character to enter console commands like traits and go back to observe after.

I know, but it would be nice if it were like EUIV where you only had the click on the country (or in this case character) to play as them. Currently, you have to enter charinfo, check character id and then remember that number and enter it into the console.

Ah okay.
Charinfo is only required once and you could keep your mouse over the char portrait. The numbers are not that long,....
.....but i see what you mean.

May I suggest some small changes to the dashboard display for provinces:

Replace or supplement the Holding shields with character portraits
It's more important to know who is the Baron/Mayor/Bishop of a holding than to understand the de jure relationship

Remove the Technology levels for Mil, Eco and Adm
Instead, have an 'overall technology' mapmode. The Mil, Econ & Dip levels can appear in popup tooltips for each province.

Organise de jure and de facto fealty into table
Currently the de facto liege relations are displayed in the top right of the province display in a left-to-right arrangement, and the de jure relations are displayed in the middle left of the menu (just above the holdings panel, left of the provincial economy stats) in a top-to-bottom arrangement. It's a bit confusing to have de jure and de facto relationships in two different parts of the dashboard, and for one to be arranged left-to-right and the other to be arranged top-to-bottom. Instead, have a small 3x2 table with columns for de jure and de facto liege and rows for duke, king and emperor level. If the de facto liege is also the de jure liege, then the two cells for that level can merge into one single cell. If the de jure liege title does not exist, then that cell can be greyed out.

Isn't that option solely available in multiplayer?

I want it for single player.
If we are talking about EU4, it was disabled in singleplayer due to the issues it caused.

I know invite to carousing has already been mentioned but instead of the current system or invite all I'd like it to be that when you click invite to carousing check boxes appear next to you vassal/ court so that it's a lot easier and quicker to choose who you want to invite as I believe declined invites costs prestige (may be incorrect) which would suck in a large realm shortly after inheritance.

It'd be nice if you could see from the list of ongoing sieges which ones are prepared to launch a siege assault. Siege progress % is cool, but not the best indicator of when an assault is available. I currently have around 10 going on at once, and I've ended up just cycling through them all once in a while to remind myself how long until they're going to be ready. I've also had times when I wasn't paying as much attention to individual sieges where I forgot some and let them go for way longer than necessary before calling in an assault.

Something as simple as just changing a siege's color to or from green in the ongoing siege listing would be great.

Personally, I don't like scrolling through all the tabs on the council members, especially between the major and minor titles, and now the Councils. I wish they were all up top instead of put "inside each other". I'd like them more accessible with few clicks to get into them.

Hard for me to complain at all; I LOVE THIS GAME. I play it all the time!

dont know if it has been mentioned but I would love to be able to re-purpose an already built holding. Like the bishopric of rome if my goal is to be a revived roman empire.

also for some reason i find myself searching for people based on their traits so it would be nice to have an option to do so in the find person screen.

Already exists.
Type in name or several names of traits into the search box at the top in the search character screen.

Interesting that there are people again and again who miss that text search box.
Maybe it needs some colour for its frame or whatever catches attention..

A custom nickname feature would be cool ! (can be at the cost of prestige or piety)

Also it is a minor detail, but the ability to display dead characters in different clothes/age would be a nice feature. When you look back at your dynasty and everyone has disfigured masks or wear the norse mask that hides the face is a bit disappointing. I guess it shouldnt be too complicated since DNA is anyway saved.

It's a minor annoyance but I would love to have the option to control the game's audio/graphics settings from the launcher before actually starting the game. In particular I find that the music during the opening is much too loud, and since I often listen to podcasts/audiobooks while I play, I find that I have to pause what I'm listening to, wait 5 mins for the game to load, turn off the music, turn back on the podcast and then I can begin playing.

If you only rarely listen to the sounds ingame then I think you can mute the game in windows volume mixer when it is open and it should remember you did so.

Otherwise you can always edit settings.txt in \Documents\Paradox Interactive\Crusader Kings II, with a shortcut to it the time taken is about the same it would be with options in launcher.
