CK2 Dev Diary #31: Back to work

Hello all! As some of you may know, Paradox spent the last 4 days in Malta and now we are back in Stockholm exhausted refreshed and re-energised, and ready to get back to work! Speaking of work, the topic of this Diary is the new Council jobs we are adding in the upcoming <Mystery> expansion. These are not quite like earlier jobs the Council could do though, because (with one exception) these are “off-map” jobs - you do not need to place the Councilor in a specific province to perform them.
council 1.jpg

please excuse the lack of unique art for the new jobs, it will be there

Chancellor - Perform Statecraft. This job increases the speed at which your Threat decays, and can fire events which improve relations with random vassals, neighbours, or your liege if you have one. If you have a specific character you want better relations with, the Improve Diplomatic Relations job will be more useful, but for general improvements Statecraft should be your choice.

Marshal - Organize the Army. This job lowers the upkeep cost of your Retinue (Or Horde), and can fire events to train existing or find new commanders.

Steward - Administer Realm. This job increases the speed of Cultural conversion in your realm’s provinces, and can fire events adding economic bonuses to any province. If you own Reaper’s Due, Prosperity throughout the Realm will also increase faster.

Spymaster - Sabotage. This is the exception I mentioned earlier. For owners of the <Mystery> expansion, the existing Scheme job will become “off-map” (if you don’t own it, Scheme will remain unchanged) and a new Sabotage job will be available for use on specific provinces. These provinces will suffer damage, gain unrest, and may even be made easier to siege due to sabotage and bribery.

Court Chaplain - Hunt Heretics. This job enables the Court Chaplain to hunt for members of shadowy cabals who plot against God and man alike.

And while I’m here and talking about the Council, let me mention something we’ve added for the 2.7 patch. When trying to have my Council agree to a vote with Conclave, it always bugged me that I would need to check in the tooltip of the law who was for and against it, then switch to the Council screen to bribe and cajole people, then check the law screen again to see who I had forgotten about. Instead, now you can ask that the Council considers a vote before you actually vote on it, which allows it to be shown on the Council screen along with icons on each Councilor showing how they will vote.

council3.jpg

While it’s not in yet, we hope to add a button right there to start the voting process so that you don’t need to switch back to the laws tab once you have your votes arranged.

Don't forget to tune in to our Medieval Monday stream with Emil and Steven, starting at 16:00CET on https://www.twitch.tv/paradoxinteractive.

The stream will, as always, be available to watch later through either the Twitch VOD archive. Or through our Paradox Extra Youtube channel where you can find (pretty much) all our previous streams!

@SSmarch

Wait a second?!

You are saying you should be able to play as one of the American Native for ~700 year basically doing nothing, mostly, in Crusader Kings 2?

The only thing of notice worthy interactive between American and Europe during this time frame (700 to 1400) was the Viking "discovering" America first and had some settlements.

http://www.history.com/news/the-viking-explorer-who-beat-columbus-to-america

Otherwise you would be hard pressed to emulate anything of interest.
first if there wasn't American nations in that time how they can attack to the Europe?(also they can make for after 700 AD) second what do you say about china?

Apparently Paradox thinks otherwise though they are winding down on the support within the next couple of DLCs.
maybe what you say is right.

@SSmarch Criticism can certainly benefit the game, if justified.
Create a separate thread on this forum regarding your thoughts. This one is rather meant for new information about the future development.
And there is a separate forum for suggestions. If you have any, go there and check it out.
Let's not derail this thread.

First of all the Sunset Invasion (American Native) are specifically the Aztec which isn't quite American Native Primitives I am speaking of. More like Central America at any rate.

They certainly had some form of civilization in place to build pyramids. But I should notice that Sunset Invasion Scenario is complete fiction "what if Aztec become the equivalent of European Colonization Invader?"

China is already semi-present in the culture of nomadic raiders that also raid China by "proxy".

Paradox Interactive have talked about adding China in the past that it would add LOT of provinces and use way more computation power for a tiny tangent benefit overall.

I agree with this.so then bye for now. I wish other users be as logical as you.(if I can i'll open a new thread for my threads.)

I think I have answered that.if this game can't hold out so much details, it is time to make CK3.

Not quite what you suggested, but I hope to add a auto-assign commander title toggle for that reason. Will confirm in a future DD if it gets done.

That's a step in the right direction, but it would be really great if you could just make it an option for us to enable the old system completely. It feels especially strange when you're playing Nomad, and you're only able to have 4 total commanders. So one army with all three filled up, and then one commander for every other army unit you may have. You're really telling me only 4 people in my 20k horde army is able to lead a flank? I really hope it can me made possible to revert the changes in your glorious new game rules thing.

Wouldn't it be better to make culture conversion an active ability on province, similar to religious conversion or settling tribes, to stop fast culture conversion of large areas of land in large empires? (Maybe replace building with it and make statecraft give global build speed bonuses and events instead?)

Something which the spymaster could help with and I was thinking about it last night when I was playing, is kidnapping. They should be able to help with planning to kidnap someone, watching the person and looking for the best time to strike. Then we get the chance to ransom the person back either for money, someone who is in their prison, it would come with the risk of their liege declaring war on you in order to get them back depending on who the person you kidnapped is.

To go with the tradition you guys probably find to be one of the most annoying ones... are we going to get any new portrait packs?

Poles, Bohemians, and Southern Slavs... please.

(I'll take any portrait pack to be fair, Crackdtoothgrin's work is simply worth it)

I think I have answered that.if this game can't hold out so much details, it is time to make CK3.

Lets assume for sake of argument that Paradox Interactive decide to do a larger world in CK 3.

The problem will not get any better with a new engine because the CPU requirement will stay more or less the same.

1) monthly track of each province grow with more provinces (income, levy, prosperity, etc...)
2) pathfinder algorithm will take longer to figure a path with more count/duke/what not on top of growing number of province
3) More character need to "decide" what to do over the same period between CK2 vs CK3.

So until every one can afford a "supercomputer" the CPU restriction will stay overall the same. Smaller world = faster game and more people can enjoy it.

It will be worse if you tried to move over to current CPU/GPU hardware generation and use the top 1% most expensive CPU/GPU and use that as a baseline. You would alienate most of the customer base. I can think of a few video game that did not go over well when they tried to go this route. Eventually they aged better but did not last long without enough customer to support them.

Also please read up on Big O notation regarding to computation. If nothing else to learn more about why Paradox is aggressive on using plague/culling to cut down on number of NPCs.

It's on my "Things to do if there's time" list. I do sometimes use Oversee Construction when I have plenty of money and want to get some long build-time buildings up, or Suppress revolts for tricky arrests. I also can't balance existing jobs with the expansion-locked 4th job in mind unless we make different versions. But we'll see.

What about making construction cheaper? It a way it could represent rooting out corruption in building costs. Also having a steward directly oversee construction in theory could persuade people to sell the raw materials cheaper and negotiate cheaper wages for the building process.

Some suggestions I had, maybe too late now?
  1. Can you add a "Revealed Corruption" event to steward's collect taxes... I think that would suit for him since he would know if a vassal is taking for himself thinking the realm isn't accounting his property income right. Or the Administer Realm could have this function instead of culture spread? maybe an event for tax boost per X time
  2. An idea for Build Spy network - event that your Spymaster achieved to hire [province courtier] as a spy . Then this spy character could have various utilities - sabotage besieged holding, sabotage his liege army, send you information, assist in plots

Idea for marshall's Organize army or "prepare for war": Gather Distant (or all) personal Levies before declaring war. When a claimant AI use this mission the game might send the player a message of "[A] is gathering troops, you should prepare for the worse since he has a claim on you, etc".
Using this mission would take some and reduce income tax, but would make all levies raise together in capital when you declare war

  3. Can we have an alert for "losing Council Law Vote" ?
  4. I would like to have the option to use my chancellor to Sow Dissent between a character on councilor's [province] and someone else - same way for improving relations. Could be a diplomatic action right click on some ruler in that province ->select second target character
  5. What about more Flavour for Advisors, like advising ?
off-map mission: Advice : this could spark to different events that inform the player of relevant things we usually care... like
    • Press your weak claim on [x] since [x] is [14 years old] (game will prioritize the higher Titles)
    • Improve your relations with [x] , he is one of your most powerful vassals
    • Send Chaplain to improve relations with Pope (pope hates you)
    • Send your Marshall to reduce revolt (if too many revolts or a really high one )
    • Give your exceeding [title] of [rank x] to courtier A (he has a claim of [rank x] as well so you to claim for him
    • Advisor tells you about a councilor corruption...
    • telling you about ambitious vassals (ambitious hidden modifier) with claims in your titles
    • If lunatic, the advisor might suggest some weird things, hire a dog as marshall,etc....
  • Persuade Council: Select either your capital or a vassal capital - He will try to get your (or vassal's) councilor to vote for laws (or against in vassals), considering councilors opinions towards your advisor

    6. Raise Council or a specific Councillor Salary: opinion boost with [x] for [t] years ,other greedy councilors might get angry and ask for salary increase too

What makes you think that the requirements will stay the same? You think there's still a significant amount of people with what in 2012 were low end systems?

Now it's true that the larger the map the more taxing and adding China might not be feasible even in CKIII, but I'd be quite surprised if the requirements remain the same as for CKII, since that'd mean PI thought that people had the same computers as in 2012.
Also the engine has improved quite a lot; remember CKII runs on Clausewitz 2 which EU4 for instance runs on Clausewitz 4 and Stellaris on an even further advanced engine version. Presumably using a never engine version will give something. Also IIRC it's still not too multithreaded due to the way things are made, so if they manage to multithread more than today there should be improvements too.

What if I want to administer realm without speeding up cultural conversion?

What if I want a "norse cultural realm with a german King"? Because why not?

Otherwise it would take a LONG time to raise prosperity one by one using the old job especially if the realm is rather large (like France/German into one realm HUGE).

Then you keep all your vassals Norse. The province culture would eventually shift anyway if you made your vassals German, and that would happen regardless of using this councillor job. You can't stop province culture shifting without changing the game rules.

Then use the Game Rule available to restrict cultural conversion chance as you prefer:
http://www.ckiiwiki.com/Game_rules#Culture_Conversion

The option in the council is just that, an option..and DLC specific.
With the correct game rule that should be fine to handle for you, ...........assuming the game rule works.

Unfortunately, even with all options enabled many cultures still vanish at alarming speeds, to say nothing of the total genocide that takes place in 769 starts. I tested this in multiple games as demonstrated here: https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/foru...-some-cultures-are-endangered-species.971726/

Faster cultural conversion via councilor without rebalancing of existing MTTH of cultural conversion would only exacerbate the phenomenon I document above.
