CK2 Dev Diary #33: Let's Talk About Sects

Hi everyone!

It’s time to spill the beans on some actual content in the upcoming expansion Monks and Mystics, which we announced last Friday at our Fan Gathering (I hope all the good folks who showed up had a fun time - I sure did!)

The genesis for this expansion came about a long time ago, when I started thinking about secret societies and conspiracies and wrote it down as one of several outlines for a couple of “mini-expansions”. Now, for various reasons we never went ahead with that expansion model and most of the ideas have, by now, been used in bigger expansions. However, the concept of fraternities stuck and the time is now auspicious!

The core feature of Monks and Mystics is something we simply call “Societies”. Societies are groups of like-minded characters who are working together for personal and mutual profit. Some Societies are perfectly legit (that’s the “Monks” part in Monks and Mystics); others are perhaps viewed with some suspicion (e.g. Alchemists) but are hardly criminal. Finally, there is the subversive kind, of which the Demon Worshippers are certainly the worst. (Such shadowy and outright evil cults can be actively combated through a new job that can be given to the Court Chaplain.)

The basic loop goes like this; you put out word that you’d like to join a specific Society. After a while (immediately, for open Societies), you will be approached and offered membership as a novice. At this lowest rank, you usually don’t get many new abilities (but if the Society is secret you can now at least see the leader and the other members.) Now and then, you will be given missions that will further the goals of the Society. If you complete them, it will give you more power within the Society, which should eventually allow you to “level up” in Rank. The new Rank will give you access to at least one new special ability. Using these abilities (they are basically just a special type of Decision) can also increase your power within the Society, and so it goes, all the way up to being the leader of the whole Society.

Of course, members of the same Society tend to like each other, and will sometimes (depending on the nature of the Society) even be obedient towards members of higher rank; or at least not hostile. This creates a whole new way of discouraging factions and pave the way for loyal vassals (or even a loyal Pope!)

That’s all for now. In a later dev diary I will go through the actual Societies and talk about their particular powers and abilities...

Be sure to check out the funny teaser trailer for Monks and Mystics, and remember the Livestreams later today, where Emil and Steven’s quest for the best German cookie continues, followed by the Norman adventures of Chris, David and yours truly!

There will be only one or two expansions after this one so major extras like you want are unlikely and there is plenty of things currently ingame that could use the focus.

As for CK3 I imagine it is half a decade away at the farthest.
Why is it that asking the developers if a feature is planned gathers such ridicule. I am really only asking because there was an announcement at some point previous that they stated they were going to 'fill in the empty spots' and implied that they were adding more playable areas. Those two DLC could be playable Republics and Theocracies, we don't know. Once again, I am not demanding they do it, I am asking if its planned. I am asking the developers if they plan on adding a feature to their game.

So what prevents you from joining a secret one and then exposing all members? Also how would you not get in trouble when you make public you want to join a secret society?

Paradox is worryingly delving into heretical territory. This heresy is looking like it needs some purging.

More importantly, can we infiltrate the sects to purge the heresy?

@Doomdark, I'm wondering is it possible to include the Freemasons and have event chains associated with them? Also is it possible to have a mystic philosopher found a secret society resembling the Illuminati? As a bonus, if the founder is from the de jure area of k_bavaria, his or her dynasty name could be Weishaupt.

As a final question, is there plans to have unreformed pagans invite a missionary to their realms via event chains similar to what happened in history?

Will we be able to build monasteries in holdings, related to specific monastic orders?

So, since it seems some form of devil worship is going to be included, and since the game is no longer completely historical (immortality and sunset invasion anyone?) is it going to be possible to have a demonic incursion as a new event? Perhaps a powerful demon worshiping society could spawn a hellish army, or perhaps it could appear like the Aztecs and Mongols do, but from the north or south. And, though I know it's not likely, I would love it if Monks and Mystics finally gave us the ability to create our own religion/heresy.

Now that WOULD be cool ! Play with Supernatural Events = On and play until you unleash the Demons of Hell. They have their own culture and cultural troops that just happen to be ten times better than any other troop on the map, appearing asa 100,000 man zero upkeep event horde.

The army appears as an adventurer horde on the capital of the summoning lord, first they conquer, destroy and eat everyone in sight before turning to adjacent realms. A unique government type that allows no builds of any sort and wrong holding penalty for every holding type, but the ability to destroy holdings and consume population for prestige and more troops. Threat level goes through the roof, mankind is only saved by the utmost exertion of every nation on the map, but the heart of Europe has been turned into a barren wasteland.

The only thing more fun than this would be consoling over to the dark side and actually playing as a curb stomping hell spawn while you try to annihilate all of humanity.

Sunset Invasion + Mongol Invasion + Black Plague on Steroids !

So, as this new expansion is about religion and stuff, what do you think about implementing some already existing mods in this sphere? I mean like Ancient Religions Reborn or Holy War Names mod. I mean, this will not change gameplay dramatically, but people who like to play as pagans will surely like it.

Jokes aside I'm guessing many of the supernatural players would like new versions of the old "supernatural" events, like the spawn of satan or the hellmouth, too.

Not me at least, just cuz the fantastical exists doesn't mean everything vaguely weird has to have it as its source.

And once more, it would not require a rework of the fundamentals of the game. In fact in the most recent patch did they not already implement something that changes succession?
No, no recent patch altered the fact that the player's heritance passes within a single dynasty.

Prior to the announcement of the Raja dlc I'm sure if I had posted a thread asking for India I would've been laughed off the forums.
Because it's a dumb thing to add, not because it's technically difficult. Many people still think it's a dumb thing to add, in fact.
People would've said the same things you are saying now - that implementing a new government type like that with a caste system would be too much effort for the game and would likely result in a half-done system best left to a successor game.
To the extent that people might reasonably say that, that's more or less what happened. The caste system is not something that the player meaningfully interacts with. Limiting a dynasty to only one of the three holding types was never beyond the possibilities of the game though.

Great, then I'm not sure what we are fighting about.
Me neither, near as I can tell you just got mad when I answered your question.

People answering you is not ridicule.
I am asking the developers if they plan on adding a feature to their game.
Since you're posting on a public forum, you're asking everyone. Conveniently, many people here already know the answer, which is why you've been answered.

I think it's more an obfuscation of you sneakily seeking out and trying to find members or locations of the secret society and making contact with them in that case.
