CK2 Dev Diary #55: Nurture vs Nuisance

Hello everyone!

Yes folks, it’s time to answer that age old question: can human behavior be nurtured, or is it too much of a nuisance? Educating children in CK2 is a powerful tool to sculpt your future character and supporting cast, but it can also become a bit of nuisance, at least if you have Conclave. This issue has been on my radar for awhile, but we finally got around to addressing it with a three pronged assault. First, since children don’t actually need an assigned Guardian or a set Childhood or Education Focus, we added a Game Rule controlling when you get Education Alerts; for all children, your close relatives, or just your own character and your primary heir. Secondly, there really isn’t any reason why you should not be able to assign a Guardian for children below the age of 6 - it’s just annoying to have to wait for a specific birthday. So... now you can. Lastly, and probably most significantly, being the default “Educator” for all children at court means you can get spammed with a lot of upbringing events concerning kids you don’t care about. Thus, we added a new “Honorary Title” called Teacher. The Court Teacher becomes the default Educator for all kids at court that don’t have a specific Guardian (so you can still make yourself the Guardian for two kids you care about and get their upbringing events, for example.) Together, these changes make upbringing far less of a hassle.

But enough about that; time to say a few words about the next patch! We’ve been keeping a close eye on your feedback and have decided to release an Open Beta patch (probably next week) which should fix the worst outstanding issues and tide you over the summer. The patch should hopefully address most of your concerns. We will not go into full detail for all points now (we’ll save that for when it comes out), but we’re hoping to have solutions for the following issues:
  • Infinite Epidemics
  • Tribal Inheritance Issues (Tribal rulers turning Feudal on succession)
  • AI Pathfinding during Crusades
  • Soul Corruption events appearing for non-Satanists
  • Secret Cult Frequency - For this one we did a lot of testing & balancing, hopefully with the following changes they shouldn’t appear too frequently:
    • When a Secret Religious Cult reveals itself, all members will join in the conversion instead of just the ones in the same realm
    • The AI is now more often unsuccessful in recruiting new members to Secret Religious Cults
    • Priests, Zealous characters and Paranoid characters are now much less likely to join a secret cult
    • Characters accused of Apostasy (with the modifier) can no longer Induce Sympathy, Induct or Invite characters to Secret Cults
    • The cooldown between inviting/inducting characters into Secret Cults increased to 10 years from 5
    • The AI is now less likely to recruit/induct characters into cults if they are in a realm without a player
    • Lowered the maximum amount of members the AI can recruit into Secret Religious Cults to a more modest number (from 370 to 91)
    • Characters in Secret Religious Cults can now only use Prepare Grounds in counties they or their vassals own
    • The AI is now much less inclined to create a secret religious cult just because their liege is a player
That’s all for now! Stay tuned for next week’s dev diary, and be sure to check out the livestream today, starting at 17:00 CET (not 16 this time.)

Speaking on cults: Does it make sense when satanists have a bad opinion of known satanists?

Code:
known_satanist = {
    general_opinion = -50
    monthly_character_prestige = -1
    monthly_character_piety = -3
    icon = 78
}

There should be triggers in event_modifiers, so you can exclude satanists (oder doing other efects).

Not correct - there used to be a huge weight for the AI to form cults in a realm with a player, that weight has now been significantly lowered (it's just slightly higher than in AI realms). This change was made to prevent religion 'flip-flopping'. :)

As a Lolard, it's really frustranting to see 50% of my realm as secret Catholics
Thanks for the patch.

Well, one they have to keep up appearances, two by being indiscreet you put entire order in jeopardy.

I sincerely hope that's not the China Button, because it's not very appealing-looking. But the more I look at the more I think it is a Chinese dragon (note the whiskers).

I also find it strange that 769 Asturias would get the China button too. Doesn't seem like something that would get used very often.

Oh god, I thought those were swords. Well now it does look like a Chinese dragon. That's horrible.

I mean, they've said it'll be over a month before expansion-related DDs begin. I'd give them time; it's probably just an early iteration.

This, is a Chinese dragon head I got off google images. The little things at the top in the button are clearly horns or really, really weird ears. Either way, its clearly showing SOME Chinese interaction.

Wow, I'm loving these improvements :D Sorry Paradox for having hating you these last few weeks :oops:

I'm thinking after the summer vacations here in Sweden, so, early August.

So every dev diary released up to this point has been for Patch related content (ex the new war declarations) ?

Will there be any new societies with the patch?

Considering that this is Paradox and that Doomdark has stated 'I want to add further down the line' means that we will get new societies for religions that do not currently have any. Catholic orders are pathetic and will stay lame and useless till mods could improve them.

On a more serious note, I think that it would be interesting to have East Asia as a separate map, though I think it would be better for it to just be part of the same contiguous map (if the button is even about China).

I'm with you, making it it's own separate section of the map seems pointless. It would remove the sense of interconnectedness that would come with having a complete map of Eurasia. Plus, it wouldn't make sense at all for countries like Mongolia or Tibet, which actually share boarders with China. Why would they need an entirely separate section of map to interact with their neighbor?

I could see it being like the HRE in EU4 though. In that each Chinese province is counted as an independent country but is counted as part of China like a permanent alliance. Maybe the Emperor holds court in Beijing and is treated more like a religious head than a feudal ruler. Clicking on the dragon button would show which countries were part of "China". This would prevent the country from being two strong, and the Chinese Emperor from having too much power, since he would only have nominal control of the provinces while still allowing China to expand and exist.

This would also make being part of the Chinese Empire as a vassal more interesting, since you'd probably have special interactions with your neighbors, but otherwise be largely independent.

There might also be a decadence like mechanic, where if the Emperor gets too much "decadence" he could lose the Mandate of Heaven and his vassals would get claims on the Imperial title.

I'd just change the dragon icon to that of a kraken. When you target a province and press the button, you get a pop up asking "Do you want to release the Kraken?" Then you answer "yes" and it changes to "RELEASE THE KRAKEN" and the province is totally destroyed...

Here's my take on the Dragon icon - it slides both the minimap and the current view to the opposite side of the (newly extended to China) map. Even now it is a pain to scroll the current view across to the other side of the map, imagine how hard it will be with another 600 counties added to the right the game.

BTW, I am dead certain that China is coming. Sorry PDX but the giveaway for me as the dev diary a few weeks back that had a snippet of Burma peeking out from off the edge of the map. Is it just me or has anyone else noticed that the game simply NEVER cuts off text that is close to the edge of the map, instead it wraps it around. Check out the Tarim Basin or Assam for proof.

I'd be interested to hear from anyone with leet coding skills to do a pixel by pixel analysis of that screen shot to see if that "border" was simply shopped in . . .

Doomdark said the next expansion won't be a big one though, and Doomdark has never lied before.

That would be a phenomenally wrong way to portray China and I would much rather it be left out than dealt with like that.

I think what's most likely to happen is that there will be no on-map China, but there will be diplomatic and tributary mechanics for realms in Tibet and central Asia to interact with an abstract China. Not sure how they'll deal with the Mongol conquest but for most other cases that kind of approach would work well enough.

I hope it's a cool off-screen interactiom instead of a "map flip" - the game would struggle to run both the same.

We could even mod it to represent things like the New World and its natives. The potential is enormous!

Well EU4 treats the HRE and Japan similiarly too, it's simply how it handles feudal realms.

Looking forward to getting my grubby grabbers on this.
