CK2 Dev Diary #61: The Dragon Throne

Hello folks!

The Swedish summer vacations are drawing to a close and I’m back and eager to talk some more Crusader Kings! What better way to kick off the end of summer than by revealing the theme of the next expansion? Yes my friends, it’s China! Now, before you get all emotional one way or the other, we’re not actually going to expand the map farther east. We considered doing that, long and hard, but eventually decided on a different approach that would not strain performance and stability beyond reason. As I mentioned in Dev Diary #51, it bothers me that the eastern edge of the map just cuts off in such an unnatural way. Playing in the Orient, you should always feel like you’re in the shadow of the Dragon. It should be an interesting and dynamic region right in the center of the Old World. So, we came up with the idea of adding China as a political entity even though you cannot actually see most of its territory.

There is a new screen you can open up, which, if you’re within range of China, allows you to interact with the Emperor in various interesting ways. China can grant many wonderful boons if you’re in the emperor’s good graces, but, depending on the current status and policy of the Dragon Throne, the emperor can also decide you’d better show some respect and become a tributary state. When there is turmoil in China, displaced or fleeing armies can arrive on the map and cause all kinds of trouble. China can even seize and rule actual provinces, but the emperor leaves the governing of such areas to the Governor of the Western Protectorate (or, to be a stickler, the “Protectorate General to Pacify the West”.) Potentially, this on-map part of China can grow enormously powerful, but you should not have to worry too much as long as you enjoy the emperor’s grace…

That’s going to be all for now. I’m sure you have a million questions, but you’ll have to wait for the upcoming dev diaries. :)

Meanwhile, remember to tune in to our CK2 livestreams between 16 to 18:00 CET!

I can promise you that I didn't base the portraiture on only Southeast Asian people. You've only seen one image. Wait until there are more images.
As you konw mongolian portrait in CK2 is same ugly, flat nose.....The reason is most Asian live in west are come from southeast Asia region. Western people think Asian looks same. But it's wrong. The facial features of North Asian and South Asian are totally different. e.g. Marco Polo(America TV series) the actor of Genghis Khan is a Cantonese:(, However Most Monglian are prominent nose.

We simply genuinely don't recognise it that well, it isn't done out of malice.

But even the clothes and hats are completely wrong and look nothing like what they historically wore. Like it's not even in the same range.

These aren't super obscure pictures either. Googling Kublai Khan or Genghis Khan will get you similar paintings. The only way somebody could have made the original Mongol portraits the way they are is if they did absolutely zero research at all. If you can find me a picture of a Mongol person wearing one of those brown buckets in the game I'll give you 10 internet bux.

I didn't make the Mongolian portraits. The Chinese portraits, though, use a wide range of sources and have many prominent noses. I sculpted a lot of noses in zbrush to try and get that characteristic look I often found in period art and in contemporary photo references.

As far as I know the Mongols are NOT Crackd's work. Don't blame him for them.

We don't know all the features of the DLC. Why don't you get it?!

Indeed. People complain so much, really, and with so little cause :(

another question I have is why was the only paradox employee in the thread arguing with a guy over sweedish word games instead of answering questions?

It's very easy to recognise southern Asian and norhthern Asian, you should look their nose, flat nose + big nostrial + drak skin + short. 100% come form southern Asia.

Maybe because:

And in the livestream they said they won't show anything yet, because the code is still to hot to show. Have patience.

Don't you know the definition of trolling?
He gets it, of course, but it would defeat his purpose on this thread if he actually responded to your and mine comments...

and cause it is night in Sweden right now. (and to be honest, quite a few questions had been answered during the Swedish office hours.)

China without china? Is this the devs way of saying please stop buying our dlc so we can start working on a new game?
Tbh it will probably turn out fine I just had to make the joke.
