CK2 Dev Diary #70: The Art of the East

Hi everyone!

Today I thought I’d talk a bit about the new art and music in Jade Dragon. If you’ve been following the development, you’ve probably noticed some of it already. Obviously, there are a lot of new icons, window frames and other interface bling. Most of this is the work of the inestimable Bjarne Hallberg, our main artist on Crusader Kings II.

As usual, there are also 15 new event pictures. This time, they were created by two external studios; “5518” and “Volta”. If you look carefully, you should be able to notice that the style is slightly different.

Then there are, of course, the fantastic new portraits by Deric “Crackdtoothgrin” North, and it’s not just one set, but two! Included in Jade Dragon are both his Tibetan and Chinese portraits, and I’ve got to say I think it’s some of his finest work.

Also included in the expansion is 10 minutes of Chinese themed music from Studio Audinity (composed by Yannick Süß and Robin Birner.) The music sounds great; check out our livestreams for a listen!

That’ll have to do it for today, stay safe!

And will Taoist characters get new icons? (such as piety icon, and buttons on the top-left edge)

I want to play with this chinese portraits so bad... I can´t wait to see the units they will have. In the stream they use the mongolian (which are great) but I rather have them with their own chinese units.

First of all, afaik the whole concept of inheritable heraldry was pretty alien to China, so I understand this is a difficult issue for the artists, but... panda face? Really?
EDIT: Certain CoAs aside, rest of the art looks great!

I have always wondered what exactly Chinese soldiers wore on the battlefield, to distinguish friend from foe, if they did not use heraldry... would each side agree on a colour scheme beforehand?

Some of the Chinese COA are really really bad and the lack of Chinese holding art is kind of disturbing considering this is marketed as the "China DLC." No offense to the Tibetan content, it's great, but honestly I would have considered the Chinese stuff to be more crucial. The lotus COA looks way too similar to what we have with Buddhists already.

You should replace the generic Chinese COA with stuff like this:

Boo! No Tibetan music? Instead we'll have to settle for Chinese music and the old European music? How can you add Tibet without Tibetan music?

Boo! Very disappointing!
SAD!

Really, the Chinese CoAs should just be the family/dynasty or location name in seal script. For locations, this would of course be possible, even with the current script (though tedious, and I'm not sure Barony CoAs can be made culture specific). Dynasties, I don't think there is currently a trigger for the actual name of a dynasty (as opposed to ID).

I really like the new portraits. I hope that, sometime in the future, someone is given permission to go back and redo the old Arab and Mongol portraits. Those two sets, in particular, look so much worse than everything that has been released over the past few years.

Ya, we already have a bunch of unusuable specialized COA anyways, it wouldn't hurt to have those Chinese character seals for the dynasties at least.

Wow... just, wow. Specially the holding art. I love it!

Ancient Chinese did use symbols on their battle standards:

City has no walls?

The art for European and Altaic cities [among others] doesn't have walls depicted either. Was that a quirk of Chinese cities?

IIRC the Chinese character for a city is that of a walled settlement. But the art in the post is for Tibetan settlements, Chinese don't get their own.
