CK3 Dev Diary #85 - An Artifact's Life

Hello and welcome to Dev Diary 85 for Crusader Kings III!
This is Areysak, Content Designer (some of you might remember me from Imperator).

As the release date draws nearer and nearer, I’m here to talk to you about Artifacts. Again?! - you are probably thinking. YES, because artifacts still have more to offer! Let’s take a closer look.

First, you probably know by now that artifacts are an investment that requires time and gold. An inspired character makes them for you, but how can you make them feel like they are really yours?

… Why not inscribe your name on them!

While an inspired character is hard at work making a fancy artifact for you, they might ask for your input on dedications: do you want this artifact to preserve the glory of your name for posterity? Or maybe you want to impress your lover, memorialize your deceased soulmate, or even make the artifact testify to your faith. A dedication is forever!

Event to add dedications to artifacts in the making

Dedicated artifact

Occasionally, an inspired character might also seek your input on what functionalities you expect out of their artifact. Should your armor shine so bright that all your knights are inspired to greatness on the battlefield whenever you lead them, or should it favor practicality and make you more effective in mountain areas? You can choose an angle for your artifact that will make certain modifiers more likely to appear at creation.

Event to set the artifact’s focus

On a separate topic, artifacts don’t exist in a void, but are living items in a living world, meant to be used, exchanged, stolen… and damaged. With use and time, an artifact’s durability lowers. What happens when your grandpa’s armor gets rusty, or your sword loses its edge? You need an expert! The Antiquarian at your court specializes not only in maintaining but also in repairing your artifacts. With just a couple of clicks (and some gold) your artifacts will be as good as new!

Repair interface

Sometimes, however, just repairing an artifact doesn’t really strike your fancy… Grandpa’s armor has seen its fair share of adventures, but it’s ancient, and you have newer and cooler stuff to wear! Before you hit a flea market to get rid of it (and possibly have Grandpa curse you from his grave), you have another choice: reforge! By reforging an inventory artifact, you change it into a pedestal artifact to expose in your court. Of course, its modifiers will change accordingly - wearing armor might make you tougher to kill, but it will hardly be of any help if it stays on a stand by your throne! On the other hand, your courtiers might be impressed by its fine decoration.

Reforge interface

Reforged weapon

In some cases, however, you might not care enough about an artifact to repair or reforge it… When artifacts reach 0 durability they get destroyed and disappear from the game. Before that happens, however, other possibilities might open up for you through events. Perhaps a scrap collector will offer to buy it in exchange for some gold (don’t expect too much, though, they collect scraps, not riches!), or your antiquarian might find a way to repurpose it.

Event for decaying artifacts

Finally, some artifacts gain a reputation or a story through time! The sword of an often-triumphant general will be remembered as a fearsome weapon, while the crown that sat on the heads of your dynastic predecessors for generations will be recognized as a symbol of your people. But be careful, because if either you or your artifact gain an ominous reputation, your artifact might be known as a cursed item!

That’s it for today! I hope you enjoyed this DD, and are looking forward to next month’s release as much as we are!

I think some artifacts are national treasures and shouldn't be tied to a dynasty. Like in CK2 the crowns of Byzantine and HRE were transfered to the next Emperor if I remeber correctly. I hope this is done for CK3 as well

Of course! :) At least for the Reichskrone; the situation with Byzantine crowns is historically more ambiguous because there never was A crown of the Emperor, but almost every emperor had one made for himself. While crowns of previous emperors could have been part of the imperial treasure, the loss of one to a direct heir would have hardly been felt like a big deal...

How moddable is this? Can you alter the effect of the cursed/blessed modifier? Can an artifact have more?

Will any artifacts have different effects depending on where they are and who the owner is?
I.e. will a Christian King of Jerusalem get more benefits from the Arch of Covenant or True Cross Fragment (restoring Holy Relics to the Holy City) than a non-Christian ruler or Christian ruler somewhere in Europe?

Will there be Demon Child in CK3 or any sort of deals with the Devil, and if yes - will they result in special artifacts? The kind that you maybe keep under strict lock and key for hundreds of years and only take out when your realm is in direst need?

Will most religions still get unique important artifacts ? Not asking for a working staff of Moses but unique artifacts give flavor to playing a certain faith.
There should be a good spread of relics throughout the map, although "bigger" religions will have some more!

This looks amazing but I'm concerned how AI would use this. Will they know how to utilise the artifacts correctly or will it potentially be another way for human player to gain advantage?

Do they request inspired people to create amazing artifacts?
Do they tend to keep their artifacts durability high?
Do they tend to improve them? Do their traits affect their decisions?
How do they pick what to display in the throne room and do they change the items based on their focus/needs?

Is there a rehaul to the DNA system especially for women? It looks like these women's facial structures look a bit different than the ones I'm used to, maybe just me.

I like that we are seeing the artifacts change over time as they gain a reputation. It would be nice to have (perhaps optionally) the artifact bonuses display which are related to the reputation. The description saying it was worn by multiple generations of rulers with the same title is nice, but which bonuses are added because of that? It might not matter to some players, which is why I said it maybe could be optional, but I like to have an idea of where the stats come from. Otherwise, if I haven't looked at the artifact stats since it was made and then generations later it says it has a reputation, I won't have any idea what that reputation added to the item for stats and I'd like to know. If it's always the same, I assume either the wiki or another online source will eventually display all the bonuses for each reputation, but I'd prefer to see it on the item in the game. Something as simple as Prestige: +0.25/month (+0.15/month reputation) or something like that or perhaps 2 sections of stats - the top being the normal stats and then a "Reputation bonuses:" section below showing the stats added through reputation. Worst case, have it as a tooltip where you can view the breakdown of added reputation stats that way.

A bit off topic, but I noticed it in these screenshots - why is it that the people standing all appear to have their knees bent slightly? Normally people have their legs straight while standing rather than looking like they are flexing their knees. If you look at the robes on the people, they all appear to bow out forward slightly at the knee. It looks a bit strange. I'll have to look back through the other DDs to see if they all show this effect. Hopefully this is just the effect of getting a screenshot in the middle of the animations.

People who spend a lot of time horse-riding are sometimes described in novels as 'bow-legged' because of it, but I don't know whether that's an actual physical change or just a jest (like "watching TV gives you square eyes"). If it's true, then you'd expect to see a lot of bow-legged men and women in the CK milieu.

Is it possible to get claims from artefacts? let’s say you kill the king of England and take his crown in combat, could you then use that as a weak claim to kingdom titles?
