CKIII Dev Diary #26 - Map Scope

Salutations!

As a continuation from last week, I will be talking about the scope of the map and, perhaps more importantly, showing you how it all actually looks. Get ready for a very screenshot heavy DD!

Europe
Europe has been reworked from the ground up. We made sure to give all of Europe proper attention when painting baronies and counties. It was important for us to make sure we have a good and consistent quality level across the map. I’m sure you’ll find eastern Europe in particular fleshed out with a lot more detail than what you may be used to in CK2.

Since we’ve already shown bits and pieces of Europe in screenshots and videos, let’s have a look at a few specific locations, and what special buildings they have available. Starting with France, it felt like an obvious choice to include Notre-Dame, one of the most recognizable cathedrals of the time period.

Next up, Iberia. Featuring two major rivers, plenty of hills and a few special buildings. In the county of Granada you’ll find Alhambra. While merely an old ruin at game start, it can be upgraded to offer some of the highest fortifications in the game.

Speaking of special buildings. The city of the world’s desire, features not one, but two, special buildings. This makes Constantinople a very spectacular holding, and if that isn’t enough, it also has the highest development level in the game.

The Middle East
The Middle East has seen the same level of attention and rework as Europe, with some particular attention spent on updating history across the region. For example, the Seljuks control a vast empire in 1066, properly representing their historical borders. They have a plethora of different cultures as their subjects and may fall apart if not careful.

Development in the region is above your average starting levels. Baghdad, for example, starts out with one of the highest levels of development in the game — bested only by a few other locations such as Constantinople! Baghdad also has one of the single most impressive special buildings available, the House of Wisdom.

Africa
Africa has seen some of the greatest additions to the map. No longer cut in half, the Sub-Saharan kingdoms have plenty of space to expand in as we have included the entire Nigerian coast.

We have a total of five different pagan faiths to play as, giving you plenty of different options. A solid first pick would be Benin, within the Niger delta. They start off with a decent development level and access to a special building: The massive construction that is the Walls of Benin.

Some cultures will start with the ability to sail major rivers, allowing them to use the Niger to quickly ferry troops back and forth. The coast on the other hand, will be open for everyone to use. You won’t be able to sail around the African coast to reach Europe however, or vice versa. That route is blocked by impassable sea, since it was often difficult, if not impossible, to sail along the western coast due to storms and rough seas. No viking raids in Africa, I’m afraid!

Let’s not forget the Horn of Africa. Expanded to include Mogadishu, the area offers more space to play in, with christian, muslim, jewish, and pagan rulers all wanting a piece of each other.

Finally, let's mention Egypt. A rich area that has a lot of floodplains, good development levels, and even a couple of special buildings. All encompassed by the Nile, a major river with green and lush vegetation.

The Far East
Looking east, the map has been expanded to include the entirety of Tibet, along with a small extension of Mongolia, accompanied by a whole set of new cultures and faiths!

Starting with Tibet, the area has a whole bunch of independent realms since the Tibetan Empire is long gone by the time of our two start dates. There’s a wide range of rulers of different faiths and cultures spread out across the plateau. The two most prominent faiths being Bön and Nangchos, a Buddhist faith syncretized with different Tibetan beliefs and practices.

Turning to Mongolia, there is a powerhouse present in both bookmarks. In 867, you have the Kirghiz Khanate, and Great Liao in 1066. Counties and provinces include Karakorum and the entire area surrounding lake Baikal.

Expanding Tibet and Mongolia left us with a small empty space in the south, and we really couldn’t have that, now could we? So we went ahead and filled out Myanmar (or Burma) down to the Gulf of Martaban with brand new baronies and counties. Which gives you two rather interesting starting options. In 1066, you’ll be able to play as king Anawrahta of the Pagan Kingdom. Starting shortly after his conquest of the Mon kingdoms to the south, most of the area will already be under his control, giving you a great opportunity to push into India! Alternatively you can start as Pagan in 867, yet a small and upstarting kingdom, allowing you to play with the unique faith of Ari Buddhism.

why why would you do that?!?!!?

EDIT please make this an option or reconsider this. I get that it didn't really happen, and I appreciate you guys wanting accuracy. But this was half the point of wanting that shore for some of us.
If it makes you feel any better a navigable West African Coastline will definitely be an option in More Navigable Rivers 2.
If adding new terrain types is as easy as it is in IR then the default for said coastline being navigable with some sort of Doldrum terrain type giving a debuff to naval movement speed.

Really would like to know if special buildings will be locked to historical ones and/or locations. That they want us to fight over particular counties suggests maybe but I'd really, really miss the oppurtunity to build something unique in a place that never really mattered but does in my AU.

I am hoping we get more fort models later on, the current ones are fine but all circular/spherical in shape.
 
Can we get a little bit of a pan south in Africa? If y'all are waiting for a special dev diary to show something off its fine but East Africa and like Benin feel cut off and I'm still trying to figure out just how south the map goes and what that means for other regions.

The map looks great, all around! Can't wait until it comes out!

Notes on Hungary: Some special characters are missing form the province names:
Zarand should be Zaránd
Feher should be Fehér
Szekelyfold should be Székelyföld
Krasso should be Krassó

I know you can't give a release date yet, but can you tell us when you will be able to tell us the release date? I need to plan my vacation days :D

Hmm so let me get it right, infamous Aurelian walls which is no inferior than thedosian walls doesn’t exists, but Wall of Benin which is completely myth and have no sources of being “great wonder” not only in game but also is one of most OP wonders? Come on Paradox, wall of benin wasn’t great and it was only Earthwork how can it give you such a big buff that challanges thedosian wall? Seems like Thedosius was stupid after all, if he had built some stupid earthwork it would be better than the walls. How can this wall better than most of the walls in game? U can literally break it with warhammer not even need of Ram

Well that is very impressive indeed! I've quite forgotten my initial disappointment about only two starting dates.

We do indeed have Offa's Dyke! It's far from as spectacular as some other special buildings, though it does exist in several baronies, providing a small advantage bonus in combat.

We have a number of pre-defined special buildings. Some of these exist at game start, while other will have to be constructed. They are spread out across the map fairly evenly, though certainly not everywhere. They are intended to be something of a contested hotspot that you'll want to conquer.

Hi Servancour, this update looks just awesome. Can't wait to play it!

May I ask if there are any special buildings in the lands of Belarus (Polack / Minsk / Turau / Vilnia / Navahrudak etc.)? And I would appreciate a lot if you could post a screenshot of those lands! Thanks :)

Really great dev diary. I'm Really glad to see what you've done on the edges of the map. Is there any chance you could show what the wasteland looks like off the map? I can see a bit of it where china should be. It looks nice I like the effect from what I can see. I really liked Imperators endless fog map edge too.
Also is that two different bon faiths I spot? Are they particularly different?

I hope you guys will add more rivers around the nile delta and baghdad. The terrain effect is nice but I like seeing all those actual runoffs into the ocean like in other games. Imo the terrain is the only thing that leaves me wanting. Can the egyptians or anyone in india use river travel? Or am I going to have to continue on the legacy of the indo-norse?

The map itself looks nice. I do like the higher granularity (especially now that my home town of Campulung is in the game). And I do like the expansion into Africa.

But there are 2 main complaints:
1. That thick border around navigable rivers even if both sides are within your realm is a real eyesore. I think a less noticible border would work a lot better especially since it's obvious which rivers are navigable so there no need to make them stand out like that.

2. While this one is not about the map terrain itself, it's still a major one and I still hope those are just beta models but... the holding models, god, they do not look good.

On an individual level they look like some kind of board game plastic parts because they have no sprawl around them, which is not great but tolerable. But when you zoom out and you see a lot of them they look like pox pustules and the map looks like it's infected with something.

Maybe you plan to add some more models before release. But if you keep up the "round walls for castles" trend, more of them will not help. You need to add some kind of urban sprawl outside the walls at least to the county capital barony (something similar to imperator) in order to break up the round shapes.

Sorry if I was too blunt but we will spend most of our time looking at this map and in my opinion it should be as close to perfection as possible.

I already wrote positive things, but for now I realized one major gripe about the region of Jerusalem. While it was extremely split in CK2 the counties there are much less in CK3. It wouldn't need the granularity of CK2 but a few more would have been nice. Especially with the importance of the region there. I just realized it after OPB video. Or is it to keep the crusaders historically in check?

The rest I still really love.

Would you prefer a random cut in Africa, I at least don't. And it doesn't go down to Kongo but ends with a more natural cut. And without an imperial succession type and imperial events (I would even say that it would also need proper Nomads too) China would be as bizarre as the ERE currently looks and honestly it would cause the same uproar as the announced feudal elective for the ERE caused. And they never said that China will never come.

The term "gothic" wasn't used in the middle ages by the way. That was originally an insult by Renaissance Italians who didn't like the break from classical Roman architecture

Yeah that was the same feeling I had would love to see a complete map screenshot...
 
Hello all.

I would like to stress out that you (CK3 team that is responsible for historical accuracies) did a bad job in mapping cultures in region of what would now be called Slovenia. Clearly you haven't learned anything from previous mistakes.

There is again no Slovenian culture present in the game! Yes they do fall in to South Slavic culture group but they do certainly not fall into Croatian culture.
(Even that could be disputed as to historical evidence suggest Slovenian culture was primarily connected via land bridge extending from north-eastern Alps through all what is now southern Austria connecting all the way up to Czechoslovakian cultures; effectively making Slovenians East Slavic heritage.)

What is also disputed on the map you provided is the extend of Germanisation of Slovenian culture in present Austria.
By the year of 867 (as when the initial game start is), majority of Austrian lands were still Slavic. Most notably a county of Carinthia that was under the Germanic / Bavarian rule of king Karloman but not at all Germanic culture. (Again history tends to forget that only after First World War resolution, that a county of Carinthia was firmly placed into Austrian possession.)

I would like you to reconsider and rethink the culture map of that region as it is unfit and
suppressive to Slovenians to exclude them from history. And it is in no means appropriate to categorise them as part of Croatian culture. Do it now while the game is still in development.
