CO Word of the Week #4

In the last Word of the Week, I touched upon the frequency of the expected fixes for Cities: Skylines II. For the last few weeks, we’ve been focusing on performance improvements and bug fixes at a rapid pace. As we’re continuing to work on the improvements we’ll adjust the pace of the updates slightly so we won’t see a new patch every week going forward but will have a bit longer cadence between them. We have made it through the quicker fixes and we’re now digging into the ones that require a bit more work. The next patch is not yet scheduled as it has performance improvements pending that we absolutely want to include in it.

The priorities for the team at Colossal Order are the following:

1. Performance improvements
Specifically, we are working on the level of detail models for the assets. This includes both adding missing LODs and improving the existing ones to improve the GPU performance. It might take more than one patch to address all of them, but we’ll roll out the first fixes as soon as possible. Following the asset and LOD fixes, we’ll work on improvements to CPU performance. This means focusing on the CPU stutters and simulation performance to improve simulation speed and smooth experience while scaling up the size of your cities.
2. Bug fixing
We continue to go through your bug reports and have logged around 100 reproducible issues that have been moved to the team to look into. There are another 100 reports that we are still investigating that require more information and a bunch of duplicates, some of which add valuable information so we’ll go through all of them. We are also checking suggestions for improvement or new features, but these requests are currently at a lower priority.
While the forum is the best place to report issues, our community team also keeps an eye on discussions outside of the forum so we can gather relevant information for the development team. Fixing gameplay bugs and issues is a high priority for us, and these can be anything from bigger overhauls of systems that are not functioning as intended to the smallest of annoyances.
3. Editor/Modding support
The modding Beta group is testing the map editor and we’ll improve it based on their feedback before releasing it. Especially the placement of water on the map is under review since it’s currently too complicated. The UI will also receive a bit more love as it’s really difficult to find the available assets that can be placed on the map. I’ll keep you updated on the progress of the Editor and code modding and their release schedule, but the performance and bugs need to be sorted out first.

Where we are right now
Talking about sorting, let’s talk about the Mail Service. This is a good example of a bigger overhaul caused by a few critical bugs resulting in the entire system behaving undesirably. We identified that the mail sent to the residents of the city, whether it be a citizen, a company, or a city service, is not delivered as it should. One culprit is the Post Sorting Facility as the mail is sorted in an erratic way, which makes me wonder what they are actually doing there if it’s not to sort the mail. The other issue is the Post Office vans that only seem to be collecting the mail instead of ever delivering it. Let’s see if we can get the light-fingered mail personnel under control! All jokes aside, now that these bugs have been identified and are being fixed we’ll have to test the entire system to see if it requires a rebalance. Therefore fixing the bugs takes time as we need possibly multiple QA rounds to make sure it’s working as it is supposed to.

Another issue we’re investigating on the gameplay side is the pathfinding regarding the Citizens’ ability to reserve housing even with no connection to the city. It kind of makes sense that one makes a rental agreement before moving in, so personally I wasn’t too worried about the fact that a house is assigned to a citizen when it’s being built. However, the problem appears with the companies as the citizen that has a rental agreement may also accept a job even if they have never made it to the city to begin with. So a Citizen stuck at the border of the city with no access to their house or their workplace is basically reserving those until the Citizen is deemed a lost cause and deleted from existence. We’ll look to improve this behaviour in a way that is more understandable and there’s a clear cut between the citizens that have made it to the city and those that have not.

We’re also looking at reports about export and distribution of goods in the city. Like mail, these require a deep dive to determine what is working as it should and what is not. I don’t have any details to share yet as we’re still digging into the different reports, but I wanted to let you know we haven’t missed the concerns you have raised. More on those next time!

Once the PC version is where we want it to be, we will be focusing on the console release and DLC content. We are committed to bringing the marketed DLC content to you, but it will not be landing in the originally promoted schedule. The first Asset Pack, Beach Properties, has been worked on by our artists’ and our outsourcing partner, but we’ll only implement them after the asset fix and performance work are completed to our satisfaction. I apologize for the delay, but we must not rush new content out before the base is ready for it. This also stands for the Content Creator Packs and Radio stations. Stay tuned for more information on these later!

Last Thursday we released the last weekly hotfix and it included a bunch of fixes, all of which can be found in the patch notes, but I want to highlight a few of them. The patch included a fix for the stuck “Garbage Piling Up” notifications, which didn’t clear properly after the previous fixes to the garbage collection. Now citizens will finally recognize that their bins are empty. We also took another step towards solving the issue where texture resolution drops significantly so you should see it pop up less often, though the work is still ongoing as some cases still remain. Lastly, but definitely not least, we resolved an issue that caused saves to load to a black screen when playing offline, bringing up some bad memories for some of our players. Like its predecessor, Cities: Skylines II can be played offline, so thank you for bringing this issue to light.

That’s it for this week, I’ll keep you posted!

Sincerely,
Mariina

Good to hear you're working on assets, and that you want the editor to be in a good state before releasing it.

Also, the line "the cim is deemed a lost cause and deleted from existence" is so delightfully dark, I love it.

but made trees in the distance now look like green turds on a stick
I don't think that is due to optimization that was made. I think that you are affected by the "blurry texture bug" that seems to affect some player (me included). This is one of the bug reports talking about the issue which also includes to low quality trees/objects: https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/foru...y-appering-black.1603887/page-3#post-29245383

When the rendering is working as it should be, none of my trees look like that in the latest version. Neither distant nor near.

Thank you for this informative post, I really like to see this game improve as fast as possible to make this this the worthy successor as intended in the first place. I hope you can leave a lot of the negativity soon behind you and although the release was not what I hoped for I'm looking forward and wish your team the best.

These posts are just depressing. So mail is yet another system that is so incredibly bugged that it's downright broken. And the devs realize this how many weeks after release? Now they're gonna check how to fix this and see if balancing is needed?! Wow. Just wow. You'd think that's something you wanna do before collecting full prize for your "game".

I think it would be amazing if CO (along with Paradox's support), took a page from another rough launch in gaming history - No Man's Sky. Wouldn't it be amazing if the developers just got to work on continuing to add more and more FREE updates to the game to make it into an undeniably amazing product that instead of fueling DLC sales to a small number of full purchasers, it would instead fuel ongoing full purchases to a continually improving game. Please consider this, CO!

Where do they talk about the review? Is it for improving the details of further performance improvement at all costs?

Basically first time on the word of the week #1, as well as on #3:
The team is now focusing on LODs and improving GPU performances, and while geometric LODs are largely automated, there are a ton of tweaks and adjustments required. We are expecting a relevant performance boost with these asset fixes. The workload is significant and unfortunately, there is no silver bullet to improve the performance at once, instead, it requires several tasks completed before we are happy with it.

Tweaks and looks goes hand in hand here. Currently there are some things to be tackled like snow on tree LODs, reflections and lights on vehicle LODs as well as performance related to LODs (the "teeth" situation ;) ).

First thing however is to generate proper LODs of different weight for all assets and scale textures for these accordingly in a way they are not too heavy but sharp enough, then care about LOD distances (at which distance to the camera for what asset type they start appearing without creating visual pop-ins) and then reworking shaders to ensure things like lightmaps are taken into account without hitting performance too much.

It's also not about "performance at all costs", it's about finding the sweet spot (aka optimization) in the end to enable tons of assets to be added and displayed on top of a base game which currently struggles to meet even the internal goals (which are especially, but not only set by the current gen consoles) ;)

Hopefully that can be fixed without lowering the amount of people walking around doing stuff because it already feels kind of scaled down in big cities
That's exactly what's happening, the change somebody is going out for work or whatever decreases with the population size. But I indeed hope we don't have a design flaw here otherwise this game has been made for hardware which doesn't exist at the moment.

Unfortunately no mention of this bug in this WotW. It's the one that bothers me the most.

@co_martsu I want to know if we'll see animations in the future?

Firefighters fighting fire, not just the firetruck stopping by for a few seconds. Games going in sports parks, people playing tennis, basketball, soccer etc.

I do understand that with the performance the way it is now, it is difficult right now, but this is in the plans, right?

Cities Skylines 1 received a lot of free updates that introduced new features during its lifecycle. I don't expect CS2 to be treated any different.

I guess that would be the thing that's missing form the above schedule: 4. Finish the game

Yeah, they have been good like that. With every major DLC, a lot of free features were added as well. They have said it will be the same with CS2.

It's okay, I know every time a new product is released there will be more or less errors, it can't be as perfect as a 10 year old product like CS:1. I always support and wait to play the most perfect version with mods released by Dev/Modders.:D

@co_martsu Thanks for this update. It's much appreciated that you gave us much more insight into what's going on internally especially with the mail system issues that have come up, and the others. Also appreciate the clarity about why the updates aren't regular, with the need for multiple QA passes, and why mods and assets are delayed. Knowing some specifics on the issues that you're facing and working on really helps us to understand what's going on and what to expect in the short through long term.

P.s. Keep the jokes coming it's nice that y'all can crack a joke at the bugs.

While I appreciate you keeping up this channel of communication with your players and that you let us know about the progress of your work, I find it more and more bizarre that you don't acknowledge what obviously many players are thinking and expressing:

You released an unfinished and unbalanced game skipping any effective beta testing or QA but now treat the game as if it were ready and just needed some minor tweaks and polishing. You won't be taken seriously by your players or deemed trustworthy if you use this light and funny PR language while avoiding the real issues. Many players feel fooled and scammed by your product. Offer them an apology and a refund and let's start from there. I might come back to the game when it's ready but please stop implying that it is anywhere near that.

we must not rush new content out before the base is ready for it
If only you took that approach with the initial release.
I'd rather have waited another 3 months for the actual release candidate than experience this early access dumpster fire which has left me feeling massively disappointed and swindled, resulting in me losing all faith in CO, a company I previously trusted to deliver
