Hello again folks!

This diary will be a bit on the short side due to the frenzy at the office this week, but since it recently came up on the forum, I thought I'd say a little bit about regnal numbers. One of the nice little touches in Europa Universalis III (and its predecessors) is that kings have proper regnal numbers. This feature was missing from the original Crusader Kings, but I am pleased to announce that it will be fully implemented in Crusader Kings II. The way it works is that the first names of actual scripted holders in the character database are counted for each landed title at game start. Regnal numbers are only displayed for Dukes and above, which includes the Pope (a kingdom tier title.) The Holy Father, however, is a bit special in that he changes name on accession. So, a character named, say, Étienne Aubert could get the name Innocent VI if he became Pope.

Somewhat related to regnal numbers is the state of a character at the time of death. In Crusader Kings II, you can browse back through dead characters and see exactly which titles they held and what regnal number they had. I'll leave you with some extra screenshots while you're waiting for the next dev diary, which will be about our beautiful new map. Failing unexpected delays, it should be posted on february 4.

That is the (currently randomly generated) Dynasty CoA. Important dynasties like the Plantagenets will get proper pre-scripted ones eventually.
WHAT? Random COA for Dynasties?! That is awesome! HHHHNNNNGGGG!!!

EDIT: I like the drawings of the baronies. Better than having 3D pics

Gah, regnal number AND papal names? And also a nice browser so you can easily see your ancestors? *faints*

Please tell me you have Rome's character history pages in there.

I had hoped for personal Coa's, awesome! would it be possible to 'scroll' through possible ones if we, say, create a new dynasty in-game?

It looks very nice indeed. Some things that jumped out at me:

1. We have a minimap, folks! Looks like a nice half of Africa (up to Cape Bojador in the west, the whole Red Sea to the East--let's go find Prestor John!) and what seems to be most or all of Persia included. So this should be interesting.

2. The baronies look nice on the third screenshot, along with Swedish culture and Norse religion for the province shown.

3. Lists of vassals with numerical relations on the first and second screenshot, looking good! The portraits look quite nice.

Edit: Just wanted to say I kept hovering my mouse over the screenshots, hoping that tooltips will pop up. :)

In the second screenshot, a vassal is shown to dislike her liege because of "liege of de jure vassal". What does that mean?

I would say its because the son is a duke and the counts that should belong to that duchy (historically) are actually vassals of the king instead of the duke since the king probably did not transfer vassalage of said counties to his son after making him duke.

One of the interesting things about this system you describe here is that it precisely matches what I did on a separate table showing the "Chronicles of the House of X" whenever I played CK. I wonder how many other players that is also the case for.

So when does the game move from "pre-alpha" to alpha? ;)

This is all great!

I have a few questions, thought, about some of the things the screenshot give to us. What is the meaning of "the jure Vassals" for Maud of Ulster (I guess since she is the only Plantegenet around)? What is the meanong of the option "priority", in the top of minimap? It looks like we are in 1337, so there will be a scenario start date at this moment or (I think no) will we be able to play with a timeline, like in Rome or EU3? I also see there is a Liege case, apparently based by landed titles, does it mean that King of England can also be Duke af Aquitaine, France vassal in this particular land?

Just...wow! Friggin' WOW. Where do I start? Beautiful map! Finally proper Papal names! I see the original CK skills (military, diplomacy, intrigue, stewardship, I assume?) are in, that's awesome; the one thing I didn't want to see changed. The hourglass represents age, right? What do the 9 buttons at the top of the menu screen do? I pray to God that the last one with the two tiny people represents a family tree of some sorts.
