It's Wednesday, and time to answer some questions about the upcoming DLC for Crusader Kings II; Legacy of Rome. The focus of this mini-expansion is going to be the Byzantine Empire and the Orthodox church. First off, in order to clear up any confusion from the original announcement, it's a bit smaller in scope than the Sword of Islam so the price is set at $5.99. While I say it's smaller in scope, if you include all the stuff we're adding for free in the accompanying patch (v1.07) it's probably about the same size as SoI and v1.06.

So, let's take a look at what's in the DLC and what's in patch 1.07...

LEGACY OF ROME DLC

  • Retinue system. If you don't have the DLC, you won't see the new interface and you cannot hire retinues (and neither will the AI.) The technology that controls the max size of your retinue and relative decrease of normal levy sizes simply does not have this effect without the DLC.
  • Orthodox Councillor models
  • Major Decisions for the Byzantine Empire
  • Byzantine Events

Oh, and we're taking another tack with the DLC this around - if you don't own the DLC, the AI won't be using the new mechanics or events either. Also, from now on in multiplayer mode, the host will control which DLCs are active.

PATCH 1.07

  • Faction system. Replaces many existing plots and normal revolt mechanics with factions.
  • Personal Improvement Ambitions
  • Orthodox Patriarch system
  • Have both a Plot and an Ambition at the same time
  • Revised levy raising. (You raise a single, large levy from each direct vassal. The opinions of vassals of vassals are irrelevant.)
  • Leader Focus on Combat
  • More Cultural Buildings
  • Improved AI
  • Bug fixes (of course)

I will talk about all these features in detail in upcoming dev diaries, but for now, that's all!

Would the historic attempt to put edgar the aetheling on the throne of england be something that could be done with the faction system?

Itd be a plot, which from the sounds of it, factions are a variant. But probably itd be expected, as in CK2, that even should Edgar launch the plot for this thrown, as hes unlanded, no one powerful enough to be able to pull it off will sign up.

Does anyone know if the local patriarch system will be tied to religion group or specific religion?
As itd have serious potential in mods if individual heresies could have it.

I love new faction system already :), some people including me where asking for more authority as dynasty head and dynasty to be more united in general, for example it would be nice if dynasty head would be able to propose marriage of one of his dynasty member(not in your court) and even if final decision on your relatives wedding would not be yours maybe you might have some influence on it. Maybe this faction system mechanics might be used for this kind of dynasty systems also after some tweaks and modifications, it would be great.

And one more thing, i would like to see Georgian Empire very much and i don't understand why devs didn't add it, at those time span Georgia was quite a considerable military power and represented one of the most powerful orthodox kingdoms, until its destruction by Mongol invasion, it really would not be more unrealistic than some of the current available Empires in the game.
Thanks and looking forward for the DLC, expectations are really high :)

A Faction of Saxon nobles aiming at getting Edgar on the throne? ... sounds reasonable enough :)

Seems quite awesome!

Any chance of nerfing heavy cavalry and buffing longbows?

H Cav don't really need that much of a nerf.

Archers really just need a buff in the tactics environment. Something which lets a good commander with lots of bowmen keep them at range for longer (or to be able to switch back out from melee to ranged). Thing is, that needs the tactic choices to be able to look at both armies composition and leaders stats, and currently they just look at their own.

tactics could get a major improvement. if im a "masterfull" commander i dont go HERPADERP LETS CHARGE ALL THESE PIKES WITH CAV.

also, H cav is about the least common unit on the field. no need to nerf it unless we get some more of them.

Did any of the Georgian monarchs ever claim an Imperial title? As far as I know, the Bagrationi were fine with being Kings.

The only unrealistic Empire in the current patch is Scandinavia, but I can't really blame Paradox for wanting to make the area of Sweden more interesting.

As i already said i think Georgian Empire might also be added as there have been added some other Empires that never existed, and for those who appeal to religious foundations of empires i think it is quite a reason that standing of the kingdom was VERY important for orthodoxy at those times as it was representing great power,
Actually Georgian Queen(considered and called a king and not a consort) Tamar supported and took part in creation of Trebizond Empire, here are some interesting thing or two :) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empire_of_Trebizond#Foundation if you read first two paragraphs of founding an Empire.

Don't belong in medieval western Europe. They're tied to tech, so its obvious that they're for high tech areas like Byzantium, Egypt and Persia, which all had some level of standing army in this period.

Tech IMHO should have an effect on the size of the retinues; I high tech areas they could have an substantial size, whereas in Western Europe they would be quite small (but not totally non existent).

That's pretty much how they've been stated to work already ;)

georgia is a small kingdom in the de jure area of ERE, bordered by mostly vastly superior states and generally onyl survives if ERE survives. scandinavia is a huge area of land that, if they would have united, very possibly could have been an empire. heck, just outside the timeframe of the game the swedens started to call themselves an empire. otherwise were going to need to make empire titles for every little kingdom in the world.

With the new faction mechanics I hope to see both the Great Saxon Revolt and Antiking Herman von Salm (currently courtier) battling against Emperor Heinrich IV.

BTW i very much supported an idea of every little kingdom could become empire after considerable expansion of its borders and power, BUT if you had read the wiki link i posted above i don't think you'd say the same, i suggest you to do so :),
FYI:
geography of Georgia and Georgian regions is too damn inaccurate in the game pitifully.
Georgia survived to this very date, ERE couldn't make it btw :)
Caucasus and black sea region is quite a HUGE area and probably very very much more populated and technologically advanced especially and at least at those times, so kingdom representing dominant power in that region -- quoting:"very possibly could have been an empire", IMHO ofcourse :)

I don't know if anyone knows but will Pentarch patriarchs be able to function as autocephalous patriarchs. Like if I'm an Orthodox King of Egypt, will the Patriarch of Alexandria be the country's patriarch or would there also be a Patriarch of Egypt? Hopefully just the Pentarch, because having two would be just silly.

Will vassals be allowed to have their own Patriarchs?
If so, what ranks?
Will independent dukes and counts be able to have their own patriarchies?
If vassals can't have patriarchs, what happens when you vassalize, say, a king who has one of his own?
Will heretics have patriarchs? That would be very very very cool, because I'm playing a game where I'm a monophysite, and the lack of organization really takes some of the zest out of it.
