It's time for another cycle of developer diaries on Crusader Kings II and I thought I'd begin by talking about the new start date and giving you a broad overview of the upcoming expansion; The Old Gods. Yes, we're pushing back the earliest possible start date to 867 AD. This is a special bookmark that comes with the expansion (and you will not be able to start at dates between 867 and 1066 without modding.)

Europe is a very different place in 867... Many of the familiar countries have not yet come into being. There is no Hungary, no Poland, no Russian principalities and the British Isles and Scandinavia are full of petty kingdoms. The Carolingians still rule the Franks, but the great Empire of Charlemagne has been divided between four of his descendants. In the Byzantine Empire, a new dynasty has just risen - the House of Makedon - destined to restore some of its former glory. The Muslims are in the middle of a drawn-out crisis as the once enormous Abbasid Caliphate has fractured, with a succession of Caliphs being murdered by their own Turkish generals.

Most importantly, however, the North and East are completely dominated by bustling tribes of unrepentant heathens who remain less than impressed with the White Christ. Why debase yourself before a dead man on a cross when you can loot the riches of his fat clergy instead? Just as the fury of the Northmen descends on the undefended shores of Europe, other, equally pagan threats are on the rise in the steppes of Tartaria. Like the Avars before them, the feared Magyar horse lords are pushing into Europe from beyond the Carpathians. Why is all this more important than the affairs of Christians and Muslims? Because with The Old Gods, all these heathens are finally playable! (But you probably knew that already. :D )

Playing a pagan chieftain is at least as different as playing a Muslim. Not only that, there are significant differences between the various heathen religions. Some are aggressive in nature, like the Norse and Tengri beliefs, and some are more defensive, like the Finno-Ugric faith. For example, the warlike Norse will suffer a prestige loss for being at peace for too long, and will need to wage war or set sail to pillage and loot. The Finns don't have this problem, but on the other hand, their vassals will dislike having their troops raised (like Christians). Some faiths get defensive bonuses and larger garrisons in their homelands, some don't, etc. However, they can all potentially be reformed to withstand the allure of the new religions.

In the coming weeks, I will explain the different religions in detail. I will, of course, also talk about other new features, like traversible rivers, new cultures, Zoroastrians, Adventurers, and much more. Stay tuned, and here are some more screenshots to tease and titillate!

Why?

However cool it may be, classical latin was already an almost dead language by the larger population at the time of the Western Roman Empire collapse

You answered your own question; because it would be cool. :)
I'm aware that the people would speak vulgar Latin, but I'd really like to revive something akin to Roman naming conventions in the game.

If there weren't dozen types of vulgar Latin, we would call vulgar Latin speaking in Italy "middle Latin" anyway. Spaniards and Frenchmen may disagree though.

I did glance at both threads from time to time. Maps are good, but at the time I did not think Paradox would try to butcher the map so badly :) so I didn't concentrate too much on your and Hibernian's suggestions... I figured this was the thread for mods and Paradox map would be good enough for vanilla. Sigh.

I would just simply like to add:

1)Paradox just makes me love them more and more... keep doing it!
2)Holy cow you guys (the forum responders) never cease to remind me how much I have to learn. Whenever I think I know a lot about ancient peoples all I need to do is come here.
3)*Most* of the main issues here I can either write off to gameplay or write off to "we'll see how they make it work out" (such as Asturias vs Castille).

Very curious for the Zoroastrians, keep up the good work!

Me too, I hope they don't make it so Zoroastrian players have a chance to survive against the inevitable Islamic Jihads.

Wait, so you want Zoroastrianism to be fatalistically doomed, with no chance for a player to save it? Why would they put effort into making a religion playable and adding features/events for it if playing it meant you were destined to be destroyed by "inevitable Islamic jihads?" You realize that the whole point of Paradox games is to write your own history, right? Wouldn't the game be a tad bit boring if everything was predestined to happen a certain way(Hastings, Erik the Heathen, Manzikert, 1st-4th Crusades, Mongols, etc.)?

isn't it interesting though that PDox coded in popup decisions for when the character is Pope despite the fact that character is Pope = game over and is, in spirit, discouraged because of that? leads me to think that they had more plans for that aspect of the game at an early stage but abandoned it or at least held off.

Most of them would be needed for playable bishops due to anti-pope mechanics. Although, it would suck if you play an anti-pope, your liege pushes your claim and you get game over...

Anyway, this is OT, there are better threads to discuss this.

All events are pop-up ones, it doesn't mater if it is AI or player that actually gets the event. The AI can just make a decision instantly without slowing down the game at all.

but if Pope was decided by release to not be a viable human option, would they have to be actual popups? but then I guess they had to be there anyway in the event the human player decided to go Pope anyway. but yeah childeR is right so I'm done :)

Because of the way that the engine is designed, there is no way to have an AI only event that isn't a pop up. If you force the event to happen to a player, it will come up as a pop-up.

This.

By event, not sure of the date though.

Holy wars/Crusades/Jihads will most likely be disabled until 1090 if you start in the 867 timeline with the patch that comes with new DLC otherwise it doesn't make sense and all the other pagans would get owned by the HRE/Muslims making the 867 start silly.

Holy wars probably won't be disabled though, at least not until 1090, since you can obviously already holy war in the 1066 start.

I like what I see, Scandinavia looks very interesting.

I assume you can form Sweden/Norway/Denmark?

I would think so, future Harald I of Norway should be alive and kicking as petty King of Vestfold by the start date. So get your men and conquer Kingdom of Hordaland and a few more petty Kingdoms up along the coast, and wham, Norway.

Expansion looks sweet, might finally pick up this game! :) I dunno why I keep holding off on it.
