Dev Diary #113 - Wonderful Views

Hello!

It was really great reading all your comments and questions last week, lots of fun ideas. This week we will be looking a bit more in depth at the wonder view. Which you can see below.

The wonder view. Please note that art is Work in progress and may change!

Firstly, we have the name of the wonder. This will change dynamically based on where it is built, and what upgrades it has. For example you might build ‘The Cathedral of Stockholm’. Then, after building the Spikes upgrade, this may become ‘The Bloody Cathedral of Stockholm’. We also have a dynamic description that works just like the naming system, but more detailed.

There is also an image of the wonder, which is dynamic to an extent as well. The background depends on where you are in the world (Desert, Jungle, Snow etc) and the depiction of the wonder changes depending on the stage, going from being in construction to highly decorated or even in ruins.

Now, below this we have the modifier box, where you can find all the modifiers provided by the wonder. Some of these are granted by the wonder itself and some are granted by upgrades, but they are all listed here. These modifiers can either affect the top liege, or the province the wonder is in.

Below this we have the progress bar, which will show your progress when upgrading to a new stage of your wonder.

Lastly, we have the upgrade view which is split into two tabs, completed, and available. In the ‘completed’ tab you can see a breakdown of the upgrades you have built and their effects, and in the ‘available’ tab you can see all the upgrades you are able to build.

let us know, your questions and comments and we will do our best to answer them!

Also as a note, a lot of people have predicted that the ancient Egyptian Religion will be making a return. I can confirm that the Egyptian Religion will NOT be in this upcoming patch. That doesn’t mean we are against it in the future though….

Something like that but we're not 100% decided yet
I don't know if this was already suggested but: make Constantinople itself the wonder. A unique wonder with The Theodosian walls, Hagia Sophia, Basilica Cistern, and Hippodrome (or something like that) as upgrades it starts with.

This seems to me like it could solve many issues in terms of which wonders to include, how to balance them, etc.

Good idea. The city itself is so important to the empires of the area that whoever held the city was the/an empire. The hope is that there'll also be something added to make sure that the emperor never gives up the city for any reason to a vassal and it has to be conquered with some sort of special CB, since taking it is the same as taking the whole empire title.

I mean, potentially, if they continue developing the mechanic, that could create some interesting mechanics for empire founding/management.

Say every empire has to be tied to a wonder, so some historical cities get that tag for potential wonders, custom empires need a wonder built at your capital when founding, etc.

Sieging/damaging the wonder during war could cause stability events throughout the empire, losing it entirely in the war either by it becoming hostile territory or being totally destroyed, means you either need to recapture it or rebuild it, and every succession where it isnt rebuilt runs the risk of destroying the empire title

Would be cool then as beyond culture/religion, the wonder could give bonuses/abilities to members of the empire as a whole, allowing more realm customization. Maybe giving them a bonus to certain stats or troop types/amounts, or unique building upgrades, or special events, etc.

Thank goodness that Egyptian paganism isn't being added in this patch, but please don't add it in the future either. The dev time spent adding it could be much better spent improving religions that actually mattered during the medieval period.

It'll probably be a situation like what happened with Hellenism, which is that a dev uses their own personal time to implement the mechanics and flavor for the religion. It's unlikely something that will have normal developer work time put into it.

Oh heavens above my body is ready if this gets brought into CK2, even if not in this upcoming patch.

A query- Would this mean Celtic Druidism is set to be brought in as well? And will the system with Hellenics be brought in for later starts for the other pagan faiths? (Eg that say an Orthodox Russian could end up seeking to revive the old Slavic ways, or perhaps a future son of Charlamagne could decide the way of their Germanic ancestors must be returned to?)

This may have been asked before in this thread but can / will wonders be damaged in some way during sieges or occupation? And if damaged, can it be repaired or just left as ruins? :p

Also, Pyramids

I love the interface! Can we get this for our Republic Mansions? I always felt underwhelmed by picking the next upgrade and not seeing anything that did justice the glory of my reign. But perhaps that's what EU4 is for.

Just reading the last two logs, I feel this is a good idea, I have a few suggestions:
1. I hope that my holy relics can be collected in the Cathedral, which can increase the reputation and piety more than the private collection, but it may be stolen, but I can also recover it;
2. The Germanic reform will automatically rebuild Irminsul (if it is burned), and this is an automatically growing wonders tree;
3. The third temple of Judaism is a wonders.

I should add that the suggestions about the palace in connection to this new Wonders system somewhat reminded me of the Throne Room thing from Sid Meier's Civilization II and III, in which you can add to it and upgrade with various elements.

What would be cool is to have the palace as an entity and then have upgrades as the sub-entity, a sort of modular pieces if you will. So you could add elements such as a throne room, a banqueting hall, a chamber for the privy council, a study (a sort of office you would find at home), a library, a garden, and so on. In the absence of a palace at the game start, it is safe to assume that we already have a throne room in your castle but throne room in a palace would surely be more grander.

This brings to my mind the Windsor Castle (while designated a castle, it is apparently also considered a palace according to the Wikipedia entry on it (see also Note 1)) which were in fact a constantly evolving structure over the long history, having various parts added or demolished over the time. It would be interesting to see an evolution of a palace as the medieval period evolved from early to late.

The view of a palace could dynamically changes based on sub-entities added or removed (not unlike the throne room in early Civilization games). However, that may be unlikely to happen as I suspect this would require quite a significant amount of time and effort in terms of the artwork.

One other thing... each sub-entity should at least have some tangible effects (i.e. prestige, piety, so on) or functions. Otherwise, it would be purely an eye candy.

Note 1: While consulting the Wikipedia entry on palace as I was writing this post, I just learned something interesting: it appeared that there are some variations on meaning of the palace across the Europe. A palace in France is apparently always reserved for an urban setting while chateau is reserved for rural settings.

In fact, according to the article, the Palace of Versailles is actually formally styled as the Château de Versailles which would make sense considering it was originally set in a rural setting (I believe the area surrounding it has now been extensively urbanized today). The fact Versailles was originally set in rural setting is attested to in that it was originally a hunting lodge before its expansion and renovation into a grand palace as we know it.

Likewise, similar distinctions also existed in Italy, Spain and Portugal, and former Austrian Habsburg lands (where urban residence is called Burg and rural is called Schloss). It is unclear, however, whether these distinctions existed before the end of medieval period.

P.S. On unrelated note, I wish we had superscript for notes. Apparently, a custom BB code is required according to quick Google search about this with XenForo software used for this forum. That makes me sad.

As I understand it, a castle is always some kind of defensive fortification. A palace forgoes that, it's primary purpose is no longer defense but to be impressive, comfortable, or opulent. It actually fits as a distinction for two different kinds of wonders:
  • Fortress wonder: A super castle, primarily intended to be extremely difficult to capture in assaults and hold out far longer against sieges.
  • Palace wonder: An extremely impressive house, primarily intended to show off the wealth and power of its owner and increase their prestige.

Maybe we can build Suez Canal at sinai ducky, if we have enough money and time.
The historical Suez Canal run till 8th century. We can make it run a little long in a if history game.
That is also a wonder/.
