Dev Diary #113 - Wonderful Views

Hello!

It was really great reading all your comments and questions last week, lots of fun ideas. This week we will be looking a bit more in depth at the wonder view. Which you can see below.

The wonder view. Please note that art is Work in progress and may change!

Firstly, we have the name of the wonder. This will change dynamically based on where it is built, and what upgrades it has. For example you might build ‘The Cathedral of Stockholm’. Then, after building the Spikes upgrade, this may become ‘The Bloody Cathedral of Stockholm’. We also have a dynamic description that works just like the naming system, but more detailed.

There is also an image of the wonder, which is dynamic to an extent as well. The background depends on where you are in the world (Desert, Jungle, Snow etc) and the depiction of the wonder changes depending on the stage, going from being in construction to highly decorated or even in ruins.

Now, below this we have the modifier box, where you can find all the modifiers provided by the wonder. Some of these are granted by the wonder itself and some are granted by upgrades, but they are all listed here. These modifiers can either affect the top liege, or the province the wonder is in.

Below this we have the progress bar, which will show your progress when upgrading to a new stage of your wonder.

Lastly, we have the upgrade view which is split into two tabs, completed, and available. In the ‘completed’ tab you can see a breakdown of the upgrades you have built and their effects, and in the ‘available’ tab you can see all the upgrades you are able to build.

let us know, your questions and comments and we will do our best to answer them!

Also as a note, a lot of people have predicted that the ancient Egyptian Religion will be making a return. I can confirm that the Egyptian Religion will NOT be in this upcoming patch. That doesn’t mean we are against it in the future though….

Reactions:
For a moment I was confused why instead of a new dev diary there were two copies of the one from the last week. Had to reread the title a couple of times to realize one letter has changed :)
Anyway, sounds like a nice little update, and nothing to break game saves, so this time instead of painfully waiting for the patch to come, I can keep expanding my realm and earning money for when I can spend them on wonders. Looking forward to it.

Will certain denominations of a religion affect the upgrades available based on their historical beliefs? For example, I imagine the Iconoclast wouldn't tolerate stained glass windows since they typically portray things.

Really looking forward to this, I've always been a fan of the unique building mods and "your personal palace" mod for CK2 and this sounds like a lovely mix of both with some Paradox refinement to do stuff that the modders can't (not an insult to modders mind you, I mean limitations of modding)

Please, don't.
The Middle Ages has cooler things that could be introduced into the game than a long dead religion without almost any cultural impact on the people of the time.

Actually, if done right, this could be much more reasonable and realistic than Hellenic. Now, non-Muslim Africa almost solely worships an "African" religion, despite the internal diversity being similar to the Pagan religions of northeast Europe. Best case scenario, one variant of Kemetic is the starting religion of parts of East Africa, and has commonalities with African, while the other variant is the starting religion of some of the Maghrab in the earlier start dates, and has different commonalities with African.

Cool Idea!
Very nice, but
47 years & 11 months
should be done otherwise if possible:
  • Start building it, cost is cheap
  • construction is finished only when you kill, let's say, 100 prisoners in your dungeon - but it can be finished quickly, in a year or less if you meet requirement
  • A special execution "skulls for the skull throne" is unlocked, increasing cruel opinion of you temporarily by +1 (but stackable)
  • you can give away your own skull as a depressed lunatic
And actually kind of the same thing (with longer natural construction) should take place for epic Cathedrals - they should accumulate enough piety to get upgraded, from priests and societies as well as from ruler and conversion patron. If you can do it, a similar system can be applied to Holy Sites, ability to create new ones and desacrate old ones.

The upgrade needs 100 kill list kills currently, the time to build is not final.

I love how much wonders will add to the rpg side of the game!
A related thing I'd like, maybe in a future dlc if it can't fit in the free patch, is some wonder-related CB:
1) for historical religious wonders, an enemy controlling it could be the reason for an holy war of even a crusade;
2) for lunatics characters, a neighboring wonder with an higher level than the character's own could very well represent a reason to attack the owner and destroy it. Imagine a crazy ruler yelling to his commanders: "His pyramid is bigger than mine!";
3) Wonders should act as a catalyst for adventurers and raiders, so pillagers and conquerors could have special CB against kingdoms rich enough to build them, or at least a bigger chance of targeting their owners;
4) Merchant republics families often have feuds and burn each other's properties. Since italian patrician families used to fund arts and wonders to show their power (well, more in the later times, but in CK2 timeframe too), could we let families build wonders and give to their rivals some special action against them? There would still be just one wonder per province, but the " work in progress" could be added as a personal palace upgrade and be the focus of their covert wars. The first family able to finish the project would then use the provincial slot and tie its name to it forever, getting lots of prestige in the future elections.

Great walls will, but they are more like the great walls around a city.
Where does this leave the Theodosian Walls? I assume they fit into the "great walls" category, but you also mentioned that the Hagia Sophia will be a wonder, so will they be stuck as just a unique upgrade since the wonder slot is already taken?

We have a plan for it but unsure if it will make it into this patch!
Currently it is possible to abort construction of the first stage though and as long as that doesn't cause any issues it will get to stay.
