Dev Diary #114 - And the Winner is…

Greetings!

The polls are closed, and the winner is…

Wards and Wardens

Which I’m very excited about! Not only because it was the theme I personally liked the best, but because there’s a lot of interesting history to explore! We’ll definitely aim to make both rearing and playing as children more historically immersive, while also adding timeless content such as the (sometimes tenuous, sometimes wholesome) relations between parent and child.

As mentioned in the previous Dev Diary, this event pack will be worked on later this year, after the next expansion is finished. For now, we will slowly start drawing out plans of content we’d like to make, and areas that’d be fun to explore - and here you can help!

If you have a specific topic you’d like to see made into an event, or a situation you’d like to see expanded upon, please reply in this thread!

For example, a specific topic might be ‘I’d like to see an event about one of my foreign wards missing their home’ or ‘I’d like an event where I as a child can become best friends with a vassal child’.

Examples of situations you’d like to see improved could be ‘I’d like to have the ability to impose a specific personality trait on a ward’, or ‘I’d like if educating another ruler’s child would have more diplomatic benefits/complications’.

Finally, I’d like to leave you with another small teaser for the expansion. Last time some of you came extremely close to the truth, to the point where we had the artist of the image giggling with excitement… we’re hoping this one will throw you off a bit.

I believe ideas should include:
  • Regents for under aged rulers and potential power struggles based on how well people liked their predecessor.
  • Bodyguards and resources to bring up wards and wards, and where. Bringing them up in the castle in the hills may make them more of a hill commander, bringing them up alone makes them more likely to get learning traits, with lots of children diplomacy, in the realm capital steward etc.
  • More childhood death, or at least rulesets to turn it up. Child mortality was very high.
  • A set of traits like guardian, warden, child minder, wet nurse etc for adults to hire at various stages in like, like a doctor maybe, with linked complications. Hire a leper as a child's wet nurse - likely to die. etc.
  • Events for child at other's courts. Spiritual experiences in the great forests. Lost in the dunes in Africa. Pious upbringing at the Pope's courts.
I hope these are helpful suggestions. They may be a little extreme to make the point I'm trying to suggest. Obviously no one is going to hire a leper as a wet nurse.

Yes, I want it!

- make an ironman compatible gamerule for playing a random heir that inherits something, and not necessarily the primary heir
Give some incentive to players to actually care for their offspring besides the one they'll get to play as next!
I for myself have now defaulted to embracing partition instead of minmaxing my realm/heirs. Not even changing away from Confederate partition when i could.
I'm having a lot more fun expanding my dynasty rather than one overpowering large blob of an empire. Usually i conquer a lot of territory and make sure that territory that my dynasty lost control of gets taken back. On every ruler death my realm shatters again, but with more tight-knit family relations. Often combined with religious fundamentalism and a goal to convert all the conquered territory.

I would like events about a child actualy being the squire at the court of the liege. It would give more prestige as an education at your own court and would give the opportunity for livelong conections in the realm.

I would really like to see more conflict between parents and their children. Specifically, children gaining traits that put them at odds with their parents, which causes the parents to have to respond. Forcing a sickly boy to spar, forcing a wily child to learn Latin, etc.

An event where an artifact is created and gifted to the ward as they age out of wardship.
Examples would be a sword is given to a martial trained ward.

A scale or abacus is given to a stewardship trained ward.

a book is given to a learning trained ward.

A special pen or seal is give to a diplomacy trained ward

A knife or poison vile is given to intrigue trained ward.

as a second suggestion, an event for a martial trained ward where they are given knighthood.

Definitely the Wards should have more meaningful relationships and therfore events determining them with courtiers of the guardian and by extension the same should go for the vassals. The main aspect of a noble's childhood is learning the way around other nobles, after all. Inheriting a realm would be so much easier if the vassals knew the heir already a little bit and wouldn't just lust for their blood, especially inside the same dynasty. The purpose of a dynasty is to rule a realm with more or less friendly peers.

Instead of just picking a focus there could be an education schedule where subjects like fencing lessons, diplomacy lessons, etc. can be prioritised with their respective events and so on.

To make giving away a child to a foreign court less a bitter pill there could be feedback events with the owner of the child, making it reasonable to change the guardian or the way of their education.

Playing as a ward could be made fun by giving events where the player can select how well one wants their future heir to behave during their education. This could be more fun than micro-managing the top realm as the still living adult ruler. Of course that would require that the AI makes more sensible decisions and doesn't destroy the empire while one dabbles in their heir's childhood.

And of course friendships could matter more overall.

You have all made a terrible, lupine mistake.
Sorry this bribe doesn't work. I'll wait for the time when you run out of ideas and start adding the weird stuff again.
Looking forward to satans secret society and lycanthropy madness

Siblings rivalry events especially if the children are wards of the same parent.

I don’t think it should be where the children become actual rivals that hate each other, something a little less intense and permanent.

are there suggestion on the forum for these already that we can upvote?

Probably not.
I picked up modding to see if I could try implementing some of my suggestions, and since then, whenever I have an idea, I just go for it, so I don't make suggestions anymore =)

We will hold you on to that.

As for situations I want to explore, childhood fantasies.

All children have them.

Having endless candies, drawing a moustache on your teacher, dating your crush, riding a unicorn, force-feeding your annoying little brother his own entrails...

Except most children are not absolute rulers.

Let our babies attempt to fulfill their dreams - and discover why adults told them no the hard way.

...or I guess they can restrain themselves.

The picture looks like as if we could start doing things which would result in the Brothers Grimm getting material for their book.

I would love some events about different langauges between the guardians and the ward. Besides the one where the ward can learn the language of his guardian. Something more in depth, like those things that are loosed in translation when talking or events about the process of learning a new langauge.

I'd like to see events that force you to choose between your kids/wards - and that affecting your relationship with them long-term.

For example, there coming a point where an event lets you buff you heir at the expense of really pissing off one of the other kids - forcing you to choose between improving your heir at the expense of you having to deal with having another kid that hates you and them over the long term. Real choices where, no matter which option you choose, all come with upside and downsides that are meaningful over the long term.

I'd just like to see it set up where being a child ruler is actually different from being an adult. Needing permission from the regent to start a war. Maybe the regent tries to take the throne for himself. Having a 3 year old inherit should be potentially disastrous for your dynasty but as it is, it just means your reign is longer.

Here are a few things I'd love to see:
  • The ability to use children to reveal secrets of courtiers
  • Using children I sent as wards to foreign courts in secret plots against their guardian, i.e. when stealing artifacts
  • Maybe a string of events or a plot along the lines of Mark Twain's "The Prince and the Pauper", which let you change your character when you play a minor
  • More opportunities to get certain traits, i.e. events that give Journaller, Athletic, Squire, Shrewd or Novice Hunter - it makes sense that teens pick up such things, especially if the guardian has one of them
  • Introducing your ward to the guardian's lifestyle, if the ward is also getting an education in the same lifestyle. Like regular training sessions if both are warfare, an introduction the art of torture and executions with field trips to the dungeon, or studying corpses to unravel the mysteries of the human body etc.
