Dev Diary #115 - Great Work

keyart-w-logo.jpg

Hello!

Today we have some exciting news, which is that we will be releasing the latest update for Crusader Kings 2 ‘Great Works’ on April the 2nd, which will be completely free. If you haven’t been following the dev diaries so far, this update will focus on various magnificent buildings you can construct, as well as existing historical ones.

I can also now confirm that we will be having 3D models of the wonders on the map. Several of these will be unique models while others will use a generic model for those constructions that don’t quite fit into a clear category. Either way, you will have a way to locate your magnificent wonder at a glance.

All of the locations of the seven wonders of the world are on the map though.
2 are in modern day Greece, 2 in Turkey, 2 in Egypt and one in Iraq (although the existence and the location of the hanging gardens was never confirmed or discovered)
Or am I missing something?
They probably didn't think you meant the 7 wonders of the ancient world.

Scrolled through here exactly wondering that point.

Thats the list that actually originated the concept. Everything else is just people piggy backing off that, largely due to Civilization.

I'm really happy we can see new things like these added to the good old CK2!

I also hope the free update could add some minor fixes and goodies, like bringing the Basques back to occitangfx (using italiangfx makes no sense for them), creating a new gfx group for the Balts (now that we can have mixed units and portraits from different packs), Assyrians and Copts. And maybe even add a few new cultures!

I believe that there is a limit of only one wonder per province, correct? However, this comes with the problem that some cities such as Rome and Constantinople had multiple sites that might be considered 'wonders'. How will these be presented in the game?

If these cities will have multiple full separate wonders, will that also be an option for sufficiently developed provinces? If your capital is the centre of a continent-spanning Empire for centuries, it would stand to reason that there would be plenty of 'historical' wonders there too.

In addition, will it be possible to have 'hybrid' wonders? For instance a Cathedral that also contains a Mausoleum for your dynasty?

I suspect there will be a wonder like "City of Constantine" (to use Constantinople as an example) or some generic name like that, and some of the improvements will be "Theodosian Walls", "Hagia Sophia", and "Imperial Court", for example. If improvements can depend on other improvements, we might also have things like "Wall Bridge" which connects the tops of the two walls (idk, just making something up here) which can only be built if the Theodosian Walls are present and in working order. Otherwise they would have to pick, and for some cities, that's just...in a word, silly. Or maybe historical wonders don't count against the limit somehow?

Speaking of the Theodosian Walls, a cursory read through of them on Wikipedia reveals that they suffered frequent damage to natural disasters and required constant repair by a designated person. Will any of this be modeled, be it just the minor title, or in the form of lump upkeep periodically, or spending men on repairs, or...anything? I recall wonders have no inherent upkeep but there are other forms available.

Lastly, devs, a while back I wondered if there would be special acknowledgement of putting a cathedral on a holy site. I didn't have any great ideas for what such acknowledgement should be, and you cited having the same issues. Perhaps you have already had the thought, but it only just now occurred to me, that perhaps I was thinking about it backwards. I proposed that such a location become a pilgrimage site, get events, etc. What if, instead of or preferably in addition to those things, there were unique cathedral upgrades that could only be built on such a location, relating to why that location was selected as a holy site?

Somewhat unrelated but people brought up Aztecs and Sunset Invasion: will the Aztecs get their own Warrior Lodge society in this patch or at some point in the future? They're the only pagans in the game to not have one (outside of the generic Pagan religion that doesn't count).

Will the Hill of Tara / Lia Fail be included as a pre-built wonder in Dublin/Kildare? It was a major political and cultural location in Medieval Ireland, with associations to the high-kingship

As long as the Civ-style "someone beat you to the wonder" doesn't happen, I'm stoked.

"My Lord, the king of France just finished his great pyramid!"

*the king of England looks at his almost completed pyramid, only missing the capstone*

"Tear it down boys..."
"But sir...."
"Tear. It. Down."

When the Black Death sweeps across the nation and kills millions of people are we going to see some new stuff for that? Also didn't we have statues in the game that commemorated where really HUGE battlefield events, how those will be affected?
