Dev Diary #116 - Agrarian Research Techniques

... Anyone watching? No? Good.

Ok, just you and me. Great, because I've only got a few wee lil morsels today and I don't want to share them with too many people. So let's all just keep this quiet and, if anyone asks, the dev diary was about how we research thirteenth century agrarian techniques in rural France. Got it? Good.

I want you to tell me what this historical character...

... this historical character...
116_Char2.PNG

... and this historical character all have in common.

Figured it out? Yes? No? Waiting for someone else to scan through every character in the game before you hazard a guess? Ok, well, to be a bit fairer, it's got something to do with this:

The list includes all the interactions in a particular category. You would not see all of them at the same time like this.
:D This has nothing to do with Wards & Wardens.

Finally, none of them are directly connected to this chap:

Alright, that's all I've got for you today, but I expect to be going over that list again soon. And in detail. If anyone asks, remember: rural France, agriculture, thirteenth century, yada yada.

Till next time!

I'm still not ruling out the footwear (Sabaton) soundtrack. And given the amount of foot-related talk here, I also think that the announcement could be that Quentin Tarantino's last film could take place in the Crusader Kings franchise.

But slightly more plausible: 13th century.... traveling on foot .... that can only mean Marco Polo.

China expansion confirmed!

Please have mercy.

We are Crusader King players. We boink our enemies and boink our family members. We´re not Stellaris players, we no good figure stuff out.
:D I don't know, I think there's been a variety of very interesting guesses in this thread alone.

That said, just stay tuned a little longer. ;) As we've said a lot lately, we're trying to only say things when we've got something to say.

Judging from the last dev reply, an announcement should be imminent. Hopefully tomorrow but maybe Tuesday.

I'm still trying to figure out the overall theme of the expansion. We know it is more about roleplaying and it is meant to tie the player closer to the map. We have a picture of a bridge, a cave, and a cathedral/bridges. We know that Regents are almost certainly included but might be a free feature instead of the focus. There is something to do with shoes but not necessarily travel? Am I missing anything?

Wokeg specifically mentioned the first character in this dev diary that looks like a spymaster but isn't because their feet show gaudily? The shoes look pretty plain to me so I'm not sure what is meant by this. That character was found to be Guy de Bachaumont (from here ) who was also a regent. Why would a regent have a spymaster pose?

I am considering that they are expanding lifestyles to have greater meaning but while it would improve roleplaying, it would not tie the character to the map. Anyone have any other ideas?

Normally, I would have given up trying to put the clues together by now but I am like a horse and the dev responses in the thread are the carrot being dangled in front of me.

Speaking of random nonsense, I've been reduced to feeding information (the picture with the black bar and other things the devs have said) into chatgpt to see if it can provide me with ideas and it has come up with some interesting ones. It originally said that "...the phrases "regency overhaul" and "regent qualities" are partially visible [in the redacted photo], which ties in with the hints we've received from the developers about new regency mechanics," and something to do with personality traits/pedigree. I asked it if it thought that secret societies are in the game and it said no based on previous statements the devs had made. It also mentioned "Event Storms" and "new Bastard Cultures" and whenever I ask where its getting these conclusions from it plays coy with me and reneges on everything.

This is like getting an email a cryptic message from a university you've applied belong to and it just being random nonsense having to decode it with the help of everyone in the student center!

Fun! :)

Edit: typos

I don't have it anymore, sadly. Had it some five years ago for the last time, but there's a limit to how many things one can keep. It was (and probably still is) your typical history book describing local history. Overall not that interesting or remarkable, but some funny tidbits stuck with me.

There are more stories about that particular bishop, though. He often complained about how long certain prayers or a service took (up to 3 hrs or more, which was common then), so the historians noted that he used to increase the speed by which certain prayers were sung, to the point of absurdity, just so he could go back to his meal. As, you know, there was the practice of fasting before a service. So all people were hungry to begin with, only this bishop couldn't cope with it as well as others.

One time, when he visited a monastery and knew from experience that the service would take quite some time, he brought food (fish or meat, I'm not sure) and had the monks in the kitchen prepare it. He also ordered all doors between the kitchen and the church to be opened, so that the smell of the food would, and I quote from my unreliable memory, "make them pray faster" (as mentioned earlier, everyone was hungry to begin with). It was noted that it worked.

If I ever stumble over it, or any personal notes or documents containing a reference to the book's name, I'll try to think back to this thread and provide you with all data. But I also have to warn you that this book isn't available in English, at least not to my knowledge.

I am a history nerd, like most here, but what i really enjoy are tales from everyday life and how people coped with challenges of v their times, those give history a red blood real life feeling for me.

I specially enjoyed the part the bishop ordered all doors between church and kitchen opened to make folks pray faster.

Thx for your delightful post

Paradox, read the room.
Maybe it's just me being slow or non-understanding...but I don't get what you are trying to say or to what you are replying. Can you elaborate?
