Do options like "Experienced Sea Captain" or "Hire [terrain expert]" actually create characters, or are they just modifiers?
They try to find an existing character that can fit else they create one, either way they are added to your entourage

We're aware of the image loading issues and they are being re-uploaded as we speak, so hopefully they will be fixed soon!

could you potentially spend your entire life on a tour?
For Tours, there is currently a hard limit of 10 total stops and then you return home. It's less expensive to do a circular tour since each stop costs a different amount based on how far away it is from the previous stop, but you can do a really long spaghetti tour if that's what you wanna do :)
Is anyone else having trouble with the images, or is it just me?
They are currently being fixed!

It's absolutely beautiful, and I honestly can't wait to get my hands on that!

But of course there are some questions:
  • Since everyone has a location and traveling takes time, how are departures of courtiers handled? I specifically look at the family of my heir just packing up and leaving, which I don't appreciate.
  • Do dinners on tours count towards obesity? How do they interact with the Culinary Artists tradition?
  • What options do I have as a vassal if my liege visits? Can I choose a less warm reception if I want?
  • Can we have more than 10 stops on a tour? Does it scale with rank and/or innovations?
  • You say we have 2 Travel Options... I know it's to avoid stacking too many buffs, but I does seem a bit strange to have good knights, good horses and other high quality stuff and only be able to choose two. "My lord, do we hire mercenaries for our tour or do we take our good horses?" That does sound like a very limiting approach. What are your thoughts on that matter?
  • Will intimidation tours allow me to terrify even brave vassals?
Thanks for the great DD, it was really awesome to read!
I'll try to answer the tour-related questions here and leave travel for the travel team.

  • Dinners do indeed include opportunities to increase your character's weight; in particular we have an event about you growing quite fond of the local dessert.
  • A vassal can choose to welcome their liege, or turn them away, but beware as turning away your liege can have consequences, especially if your liege is not so forgiving.
  • 10 stops is the limit right now for everyone.
  • For all tour types including intimidation, each time you depart from a stop, you make a demand. Taxation is money, majesty is a show of submission, and intimidation is a promise to not join factions. Your vassal can always refuse this demand, and how likely they are to do so depends on what your demand is and some general personality checks. So your brave and unruly vassals are more likely to refuse an intimidation demand.

Exclusively by sea? With only stopping at ports? For example, could I choose whether to go by land or sea when I'm going from Rome to Constantinople?
As it says in the diary you can specify what route you take completely :)

Different terrains come with different risks.

>Same-culture festivals still yield powerful rewards.
>popular opinion +5 (literally)

You get quite a lot of these and they can impact multiple provinces at once; usually a direct vassal's held counties. Collecting screenshots takes a bit of time, and I was quite busy so I just used the one I had to hand to demonstrate what kind of effect you get as a same-culture ruler. You also get a guaranteed reward at the start of each stop so you do not rely entirely on random events to get your rewards.

This is all good news I don't really see a reason to say anything negative about or critic, good job Paradox. I've had my fair share of critics here but this dev diary has blown me away.

Many people have voiced there concerns of nothing to do during peacetime and that the game is too bland, this is definitely a start in the right direction to add a bit of depth so I absolutely approve!

Stating that I still have my same feedback as prior. I do hope either in-between now and the release of this dlc or not to long after we receive a few quality of life updates bringing back the most wanted features and mechanics from CK2. I know there's a lot such as diseases, societies, plagues, natural disasters, government types and more.

It woudnt be realistic to do it all but I would appreciate it if you start working on some of that one at a time or atleast let us know that you hear us. From the Paradox site, reddit and to the steam discussion that's the biggest complaint. Why weren't the best things mechanics and features from CK2 brought over and just abandoned?

This dlc and few quality of life updates would have the community in a great space and add so much to the game that we've been missing for 3 years. Either way good work, if I could preorder, I would now. This will be a game changer.
Glad we're delivering something you feel you'll enjoy!

As for the latter point about other features and future reworks, I refer you to the floor-plan DD I'm afraid. I can't promise any specific features, but just know that many of these things are on our minds.

Will cultural traditions have an impact on the tours rewards and outcomes? Like for example greater cultural acceptance gain after a cultural festival for xenophile characters? Or culinary artists losing more stress or gaining prestige after diners?
There are some events and outcomes here and there in both tours and travels that are influenced by cultural traditions, yes. For example, you're more likely to enjoy your dinner if your host has the Culinary Artists tradition.

Also want to echo the concerns about stacking bonuses in a game that already has plenty.

I don't have a concern about the fact that tours aren't necessary per se, but if they're adding more bonuses without any balance in the opposite direction, we just end up with even stronger and richer realms and characters.

If, on the other hand, there's a balance pass that makes money and vassal management harder in general, then tours might not be "forced" but they might not be "optional" either - that's the real balancing point I think a lot of people would probably like to see (speaking for myself at the very least)
Balance is always a concern and numbers will change to accommodate of course.

Tour rewards are strong since this is a Grand Activity, it is a large investment that also yields large rewards. The Byzantine tour included in the screenshots cost 2300 gold, for example, and that's not even going for the most expensive options.

I think it's specifically your "vassals". So whoever you are, if you have a baron or a mayor as a vassal, you can probably tour those, too.
You cannot visit barons on a tour at all, and counts cannot tour.

You can visit direct vassals of count or higher. There is also some age requirement but I don't remember the exact age.

hey. listen? listen. hey. please be so, so careful with the checks for this one. like, infidelity and fornication are all well and good, the fact that its fully opt-in is great and all, but its not so much the player banging everything in sight that people are fed up with. the ai cannot be trusted with this unless youre EXTREMELY rigorous with blocking it for characters it doesnt make sense for

like, im gonna keep it real, the reason love and lust lost so hard in the poll that one time is everyone on the planet saw that and immediately kneejerk went no thank you we have quite enough of that. last thing we need is more events making characters cheat or fornicate pretty much ignoring their traits and circumstances entirely
Rest assured, the Lechery intent is not the default and the ai weights in favor and against picking it are based on their traits and how likely they'd be to fornicate broadly.

Pretty funny that the Byzantines are used as the Example when no Emperor toured the Empire in its entire History lmao.
Yeahhhh that is correct, but we made the decision to allow any eligible ruler to tour. Byzantium was just who I happened to be playing when grabbing screenshots.

I think it would be better gameplay and more realistic if Control and/or vassal relations slowly decreased over time (for T&T owners only) so that you have an incentive to tour.
The incentive to Tour is that Tours are rewarding and fun, and the rewards can help you out in various circumstances. I don't believe it is good or necessary to arbitrarily punish the player for not participating in Tours, players should participate in an activity because the activity is fun to do.

Much like how Hunts and Feasts and Pilgrimages are all optional, whether or not you need to tour will depend on your circumstances. A Tour will likely be pretty vital if you've just ascended to the throne, getting those unruly vassals in line and out of factions against you.

A very bad decision.
You are trivializing and destroying the game by making new mechanics optional and only good for farming buffs, destroying game balance in the proccess.
Goodness me, I sign off and leave you lot alone for a bit and you've hyper fixated and made wild assumptions based on one comment.

Of course we will continue to update the balance of the game based on what we add. Tours yield powerful rewards but they are also expensive. If we find that realms are too stable, we'll make some tweaks and changes to accommodate.

Activities have been opt-in content since the game was released, I did not think saying that we won't directly force you to do Tours would be controversial.

And another thing, as a vassal on my liege's council, if my liege goes off on T&T, can I accompany them?
Only unlanded courtiers and guests will be able to come along on the Tour. Vassals participate by being visited. In fact, part of planning your Tour is deciding just how big your entourage should be! Larger entourages are more expensive, but grant you larger prestige bonuses.

This tooltip is being worked on, mind you.

We decided it would be mechanically weird if you were both accompanying your liege on Tour and being visited, plus it would require an extra pool of events for being an attendee of a tour but not the liege or the stop host, so we decided to just focus on the experience of touring and being visited.

That's a shame, I was hoping to accompany/be accompanied by another player in multiplayer.

How does a player-led tour visiting a player vassal work (EDIT: in multiplayer)?
Most Tour events are bilateral; meaning that either the liege or the vassal will get an event, and then the other party will get an opportunity to respond. Take the "An Early Pledge" event included in the diary as an example. If you take advantage of your vassal's gullible heir, your vassal can step in and prevent the hook in exchange for some other consequence.

Many of the precise activities in the Cultural Festival are decided by the vassal beforehand, and to use another example from the diary, the "Precarious Prey" event offers the vassal an opportunity to either help their liege or steal their liege's glory, should their liege fail to make the shot. Lots of back and forth for a lot of these Tour events.

The realm should not want to be stable, and you should want to do activities/tours, because they are a tool to combat this AND they are fun. I love cake, but after two slices, I don’t need more cake. Our dopamine receptors only need so much fun. If the tours/courts/events/activities can be used to creatively solve problems, now THAT gives you the real dopamine shot, because you have to WORK for it.
I think this is the key point - tours added as an extra realm management option without corresponding maluses
I have not at any point in this thread claimed that we are not touching game balance surrounding realm stability and vassal opinion. Obviously when there are new mechanics or tools introduced to the game, balance has to be adjusted to accommodate and we have whole internal processes dedicated to exactly this; playing the game, running overnight AI games, etc.

All I have said is that I'm not going to force you to go on Tours. That literally just means I'm not going to make a random event that makes everyone hate you. It doesn't mean there won't be incentive to go on Tours or that we won't touch realm stability balance.

Wait I can't tour to see my liege?
I think there's some confusion about what a tour is here. Travel and Tours are different things. Travel is the broad concept of characters moving from point A to point B on the map, which is talked about in the first half.

A Grand Tour is an activity which uses the travel system extensively. It is about visiting your subjects. This does not mean you won't be able to Travel to your liege under different circumstances :)
