Hi everyone!

I know you probably want more info about the upcoming expansion, but we’ll have to keep a lid on it for the time being. Instead I’m going to give you some information about how we work. Our current team consist of me, Doomdark, 4 programmers (and one of those started last Thursday), 3 scripters, 1 designer, 2 artists and 4 QA. On top of this the talented people from Paradox South are working on a content pack and there is also sound and music in production.

The core team is using a subset of the SCRUM methodology and a lot of focus is put on working more closely with QA than before in order to keep quality as high as possible. Our sprints are 3 weeks, and the final week has a focus on fixing bugs (old and new). Nearing the Gold Master (this is the version of the game we will release), we stop developing new features and focus fully on bug fixing and balancing. Since the Gold Master milestone date and the actual release date usually are a couple of weeks apart, we keep working on bugs and minor improvements for the first patch until the release (and beyond). In some cases (like with Horse Lords) the first patch is released the same day as the expansion, but sometimes it’s better to wait for the initial feedback before releasing a patch. As someone in QA noted for Horse Lords: one day after the release the players have tested the game several more hours than the QA team has done during the development of the expansion.

A tidbit of extra info about the expansion: the changes that go into the patch will fundamentally change how a portion of the game is played.

The custommer is always right. Especially when the custommer is saying things along the lines of "I want to buy things"

think you could discuss border gore, how to balance the actual historical nature of some border gore against ideas like being able to hold Jerusalem while also holding England, as well as the idea of trying encourage the AI to make de jure borders instead of the horrible messes it often does

I second this. One of the biggest irks I have with the nomads is when a clan settles down and it takes seven provinces no two of which are touching and turns them into a "Kingdom". It is then reconquered in the space of four-five years by all the still nomadic tribes it touches plus whoever else holds the de jure duchies of its provinces.

The other issue with border gore is internal border gore. As a Byzantine vassal king, I've seen the Emperor grant viceroyalties to my count vassals in Italy for duchies in Anatolia (making them not my vassals anymore). The AI could be smarter but, ideally, you and the AI should only be able to grant a viceroyalty to a count within that duchy. When half the realm goes independent (which has happened mysteriously in the middle of a revolt to lower crown authority), this internal border gore become external. This happens elsewhere in the game. Dukes on one side of a large empire/kingdom will get a vassal or a county on a complete opposite side. This is evident when the Abbasid empire collapses (or vassals become independent due to vassal limit) and you'll have a Mauritanian duke holding land in Central Asia, or the Abbasids themselves holding on to single counties separated by thousands of miles. Perhaps, the region identifiers can be used to adjust fabricate claim chances, too.

Duchy of Flanders moved to de jure France confirmed ?

The last patchnotes ever for CKII will read :

"MAJOR : Transfered Flanders from HRE to France de Jure - game is now fully complete and operational !"

They mentioned in the previous DD how they plan to release this expansion sometime around Christmas. They can't really post full dev diaries now, so far away from the release.
In my opinion, it's better to get little info now, than to wait for December.
Sometime around christmas? But how does that make room for the 3 dlc they said they'd release? October is the traditional release date for the second dlc of the year and christmas is for the 3rd.

You can safely assume that we won't release two more expansions this year.

The dev diaries won't contain all that much about the expansion (or the patch released at the same time), until we're closer to announcing anything official.
If that bothers you, then feel free to consider these as non-dd:s and just random posts from the dev team. We won't take offense ;)

Are there topics that people would like us to have for these dd:s? If it's not related to the expansion/patch, we might consider putting it in.
What happened to the 3rd dlc you were planning back in January? Is it being bumped into next year, abandoned all together, or implemented into the next dlc like the minieast african dlc was for RoI.

Thanks I guess I should have read the whole thread first.

Honestly, I'm totally fine with there only being one more DLC this year. One fewer thing for me to be spending money on.

Probably bumped to next year, not surpising considering they're working on 4 titles right now, this dlc, EU4 dlc, Stallaris and HOI4.

.

Actually all your dynasty members, but you don't chose your dynasty members nor your friends. That said I hope this isn't a generic alliance system like eu4 but several diffrent pacts that can be used such as mutual defence pact, pact to attack a third party and non agression pact.

People who don't work in software development probably didn't get a lot out of it but I really liked hearing about your methodology and wouldn't mind seeing more like this.

You have my sympathy when it comes to QA and bugfixing. At this point CK2 is basically Corner Cases: The Game.

What degree of automation do you use in your QA (either at the code level, or at the program UI level)?

Is your code written in such a way that all inputs can be predictable, and how do you keep new features from breaking the stream of random numbers? (For example, if you have a recorded scenario in which the code gets 28 numbers from the "random number list", how do you keep new code from messing up the list by grabbing one of the numbers expected by the rest of the code?)

I've done my best to translate this into non-techie-speak, but probably didn't to a perfect job. Sorry!
