Developer Diary | Alt-History Germany

Hallo, wie geht es dir?

Stay tuned for tomorrow, Thursday November 7th, that there will be a Dev AMA over on Reddit!

Paradox_Danne here one last time to guide you through the final German Dev Diary before Götterdämmerung drops and you can experience all of this first hand. Buckle up, because today we’re diving into German alt-history! Before we get started though, let’s have one last look at the old German Focus Tree and then compare it with the new one.

1_german_alt_history.png

The Old German Focus Tree has served us well over the years

2_german_alt_history.png

But it’s time to let a new German Tree sprout

As you can see, the new German Focus Tree is something of a behemoth and by far the largest Tree in the game. If you’ve read the previous two Developer Diaries about the Historical branches and the German systems (if not, stop reading this and head over there immediately!) most of you will recognize a lot of this, but there’s uncharted territory here as well. Hoist your proverbial sails and let’s see where the current takes us as we explore Germany’s alt-history.
But a word of warning before we cast off; all you are about to see is very much a work in progress, which means things might and will change.

3_german_alt_history.png

Germany’s democrats and monarchists have received more to do and are now even accompanied by the communists

As you might be able to tell, the alt-historical branch has been greatly expanded upon and offers a wide range of different playstyles for Germany. One thing that remains the same though is the actual Civil War. We decided very early on not to expand this bit or alter it all that much; we reasoned that if you want to play alt-history you want the Civil War to begin and end as soon as possible. So it’s very much straight to the point still (with maybe one or two new minor surprises). Before moving on to the various political paths, let’s talk about the few Civil War-centric focuses there are.

4_german_alt_history.png

After starting the Civil War you have a few focuses to help you through these dark times

With the Civil War tearing Germany apart, you can Rally the Nation to bring down the Nazis faster and Rebuild the Nation to help your industries recover faster, which then can be expedited with Revitalize the Nation. All of this should bolster Germany and help it recover quickly to move on to other things, such as tending to the future and deciding what kind of politics you want to pursue.

Democracy or Monarchism

5_german_alt_history.png

The Democratic and Monarchist paths share most focuses but cater to different playstyles while not excluding any of them

You don’t have to be Sherlock Holmes to quickly deduce that the Democratic and Monarchist branches share almost all focuses between them. This of course means you can be hyper-aggressive as a Democratic Germany, or become the savior of East Europe as the Kaiser and fend off Soviet aggression. This has been done to offer different ways of playing Germany, but it also has a basis in reality. After WW1 Germany never ratified the eastern borders set by the Versailles treaty (it would actually take until 1970 for the eastern borders to be accepted and ratified properly), and it always harbored a desire to regain these territories. Even during the Weimar Republic, Germany coveted these areas and never fully accepted the loss of these lands. You’ll be able to regain these lost parts of Germany through different means - but more on that later. Let’s discuss what exactly sets Democracy apart from a revived Kaiserreich.

Democracy

6_german_alt_history.png

After you Re-establish Free Elections you can become a technological powerhouse, secure better relations with your Western neighbors, but also become a beacon of Democracy

The Democratic branch is all about cooperation, reconciliation, and technological advancements. You can Reverse the Brain Drain to kick your research into high gear and then further improve it with Shared R&D Programs to really accelerate the research pace. And by making amends with your Western neighbours you can increase trade with them or even regain some of your old colonies. Depending on what you choose between Embrace Liberal Leanings or Strive for Conservative Values you’ll either make political advisors, Economic and Trade Laws much cheaper or get all political and military advisors at a slightly reduced cost while Conscription Law also gets a lot cheaper.

7_german_alt_history.png

Cooperation and reconciliation will lead to technological innovations and more trade

8_german_alt_history.png

The Shield of Democracy comes in two different flavours

Monarchism

9_german_alt_history.png

After you Revive the Kaiserreich you can start to realize the Imperial Forces’ true potential

The keen-eyed among you will notice that you can now choose which flavour of authoritarianism you want; the rule of good old Wilhelm II or install a Military Dictatorship with Wilhelm III as figurehead, with the Fourth Supreme Army Command as the true power in Germany. This also has a historical background with the Army Command being the de facto authority in Germany during the later parts of WW1. Both options have their own exclusive focuses with the Kaiser geared more toward research and the development of Special Projects while the Supreme Army Command is all about preparing Germany for the next war and strengthening its military. What’s true for both though, is the eagerness and willingness to rearm and demand lost territories and exact vengeance….

Weltpolitik

10_german_alt_history.png

With Germany’s old colonies lost, the question is how you will regain them

Now, after having chosen your leader and political course, it’s time to set sail and venture out on the open seas to rebuild your old empire through some good old-fashioned Weltpolitik - which simply means “world politics”. This was the imperial foreign policy under Wilhelm II as Germany aimed to become a global power. There are basically two ways to become a global empire once more; you can either accept British naval dominance and ask nicely (and sometimes not so nicely - looking at you Portugal) to get your old colonies back, or you can simply go to war over your old claims and demand your rightful place in the sun. Wedged in between these two paths you have a third option; to align more closely with China and offer both industrial and military help to bolster them. In the end, you’ll carve up Asia between yourselves in spheres of influence. “But wait, hold up, hold up”, I hear you say after taking a long, hard look at the picture above, “‘Carve up Congo’ doesn’t sound like anything the British would agree on”. Believe it or not, but this also has a basis in history; the then Prime Minister of Britain, Chamberlain, once offered Hitler to carve up Congo between both nations. This was a part of his appeasement strategy (famously working out oh-so-well), and the idea was that this would placate Hitler and his lust for conquest. Lmao. I thought it was a neat idea and put it here instead.

Realpolitik

11_german_alt_history.png

What alliances and deals will you strike to strengthen Germany?

If Weltpolitik is all about global power plays on the world stage, then Realpolitik is about how you conduct politics and diplomacy closer to home. The big name associated with the term is of course Otto von Bismarck, who used Realpolitik to achieve the unification of Germany and created a delicate balance of alliances in Europe designed to keep Germany out of a two-front war (which abruptly fell apart as soon as he left office - leading to WW1). There’s quite a lot to go through here actually, so let’s get started - and we’re starting from the far left with:

Mitteleuropa

12_german_alt_history.png

Tie other nations closer to Germany by strengthening their industries and exploiting their resources

Mitteleuropa of course means “Middle Europe” and is a German term for Central Europe, but the definition of what Mitteleuropa encompasses has shifted throughout the ages. It is not merely a geographical term, but also a political one. Mitteleuropa envisions a German-dominated central Europe with countries strongly tied to, or even ruled by, Germany. And this is exactly what you can achieve by going down this branch. After the Civil War you stand alone, without allies, but this changes here; this is where you once again can form your own alliance to weather whatever may come. This is also where you decide how to handle poor old Austria; do you invite them into your newly founded faction or do you push for unification, giving Burgenland to Hungary to entice them to join Mitteleuropa? From here you have to decide whether or not to restore the old Central powers (with either Austria or Hungary depending on your earlier choice), but under a much stronger German influence, or try to unify as much of Europe under your leadership as possible while making every faction member stronger until you’re able to form the European Confederation?

See to the Eastern Front

13_german_alt_history.png

Who said playing nice can’t be fun? Protect Eastern Europe before the Soviets come knocking on your door

What happens if you play it cool and don’t decide to gobble up other nations? Well, someone else is just going to take your place, aren’t they? There’s a very high likelihood that the USSR will start to eye the countries between them and you with increasing appetite (so not very different from history actually). Who’s going to stop them anyway? You? Ravaged by Civil War you can’t possibly hope to save the countries of Eastern Europe from their fate. It is sealed. A done deal. The Soviets will have these nations for breakfast. Well, I guess you can always try to help them. Offer them guarantees, construct forts, build up their industries, train their militaries - do whatever you can. There’s even a possibility that you can invite them into your faction and further boost their industries….

Restore the Brest-Litovsk Borders

14_german_alt_history.png

Coerce your eastern neighbours into giving up lands so you can restore the borders set by the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk

Well, what if you don’t want to play nice? Oh, there are options for you too (the Weltpolitik branch notwithstanding)! Many of you may already know this, but Germany signed a separate peace deal with the Russians towards the end of WW1, the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, where the Russians lost ⅓ of their population and over 50% of their industrial lands. So, a pretty severe blow. Well, all of this was undone by the Treaty of Versailles which annulled the treaty, and all of the lands Germany had gained became free nations. It is now within your grasp to restore these borders and German honour!

Reject the Locarno Treaty

15_german_alt_history.png

If you are of the mindset that the Treaty of Versailles was unfair you can Reject the Locarno Treaty and reclaim Elsass-Lothringen

The Locarno Treaty was signed between Germany and a whole bunch of other nations to secure and guarantee Germany’s new WW1 borders with France and Belgium. If you have chosen to bring back the Kaiser from his exile or appoint a military dictatorship, you have the option to first bully the Danes into giving back southern Jutland (another piece of land lost with the Treaty of Versailles), before you can Reject the Locarno Treaty and have at it with France one more time. As you may have noticed, this path is also accessible if you Accept British Naval Dominance in the Weltpolitik branch; the caveat being that France has to fulfill certain criteria first, much like the old focus with the same name.

But what if you don’t want to play a fascist, democratic, or monarchist Germany? Well, there are slim pickings then, but you can always start;

The Proletarian Revolution

16_german_alt_history.png

Throw off the shackles of capitalism and free workers around the world as Communist Germany

Welcome to the revolution comrades, it’s been a long time coming. It’s time to establish the Proletariat and bring it to the masses all around the world. There are two ways of doing this, one more aggressive than the other, but neither is peaceful (those damn capitalists just won’t see common sense!), but before we get ahead of ourselves we have to discuss how to turn Communist in the first place. You didn’t think you’d do it by the press of a button, did you? No, you need to press several buttons!

Some of you may deem this the most unrealistic path for Germany to take, but they had several socialist uprisings just after WW1 and some even broke away from Germany and proclaimed their own, independent Soviet republics. In fact, it was the Kiel Mutiny of November 1918 that sparked the following revolutions and uprisings and the downfall of the monarchy in Germany. This mutiny had clear socialist undertones, and while the Left was finally defeated in the German Revolution of 1918 and all German Soviet republics abolished, the Weimar Republic emerged from this turbulence helmed by the Social Democrats. Ok, why am I giving you this quick history lesson? Because this is kind of how you turn Communist; by mimicking history.

17_german_alt_history.png

Spread the Proletarian Revolution to new states to gain momentum for your cause!

For each state you spread the revolution to the stronger the Communist movement grows, but so does the instability of Germany. And be mindful that not all states are equal; the more industries a state has the more workers you can sway to your cause, and the bigger the impact in loss of stability and increase in Communism support you’ll get. You might also have noticed the Imminent Proletarian Revolution that’s ticking down. So what happens if you reach 0 days?

18_german_alt_history.png

The Second German Civil War

The states you manage to spread the Proletarian Uprising to will join you in any potential Civil War. Luckily, this Civil War is avoidable - if you play your cards right. For each state you spread the Proletarian Uprising to, you'll add days to the Imminent Proletarian Revolution, postponing the Civil War by a few days. This can also be achieved by completing certain focuses. It’s a race against the clock, but one which you should be able to win - especially if you plan ahead just a little bit.

19_german_alt_history.png

With The People’s Victory, you have finally become a true socialist nation

So, you’ve emerged as a Communist nation - what now? How will you secure the Revolution, or even spread it elsewhere? There’s a lot left to cover so let’s do a blitz through the various shared branches the Communists have.

20_german_alt_history.png

If you like the spy game, a Communist Germany is what you’re looking for where you can form the infamous Stasi

21_german_alt_history.png

Get Communist militias and upgrade Ernst Thälmann’s advisor trait in the Nationale Volksarmee branch (where you might have to sack some generals but also get new ones)

22_german_alt_history.png

Nationalize Industries to improve August Thalheimer and your factory output before expanding your Recruitable Population with Women’s Rights and Equality

23_german_alt_history.png

Sign the Second Treaty of Berlin to boost your and the Soviet’s industries and maybe trade some of your factories for resource rights

And that’s it for this blitz round. Let’s turn our attention to more intricate stuff, like how you-

Spark the Flame of Revolution

24_german_alt_history.png

You have had your revolution, comrades, but what about everyone else?

If you like flipping countries Communist, this is the path for you! Here you can Bolster Communist Sentiment in countries, and in doing so eventually trigger a Civil War in said nation. But to secure the Revolution and guarantee that your side comes out on top, you can send Infantry Equipment to countries embroiled in a Communist Civil War, or even send boots on the ground with your volunteer forces. By completing Spark the Flames of Revolution you’ll also create your very own faction: the Proletarian International. With Strengthen Proletarian International you’ll automatically invite any country you helped turn red to your new faction (so those pesky Soviets don’t sweep right in and reap what you’ve sowed by enlarging the Comintern).

25_german_alt_history.png

Turn all of Europe Red to bolster your faction in ever-growing numbers and put an end to Fascism in Europe

Root Out Imperialism

25A_germany_alt_hist.png

You might have ended Fascism in Europe and turned all of your neighbors into docile allies, but what about the rest of the world?

If you want to spread the Proletariat beyond Europe’s borders you’ll have to Root Out Imperialism and increase resistance and autonomy in African and Asian countries suffering under the boot of colonialism. After that, you can spread the word of Marx to South America or the Middle East before facing off against the forces of Capitalism (which we all know resides in the USA) and the remnants of corporatism in Japan (we don’t care if they’ve turned their backs on their emperor or not - to us they’ll always be fascist sell-outs unless they’re actually Communists, which makes them waaaay cool).

26_german_alt_history.png

Communist hegemony won’t be realized until we have Hegemony over Europe

Legacy of the Spartacus League

27_german_alt_history.png

Look toward the past and follow in the footsteps of the Spartacus League

The roots of the German Communist movement and the German Communist Party (the KPD) can be found in the Spartacus League, a breakaway group of the Social Democrats. The Spartacus League was founded and led by Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg (both murdered during the Spartacist uprising in 1919), who both were very much anti-militarists. Luxemburg in particular believed in Democratic institutions and that Communism should use those venues to gain power, while Liebknecht believed in the proletarian revolution. This is also reflected in the exclusively Communist National Spirit of Politbüro.

28_german_alt_history.png

Politbüro will take on different aspects depending on which Communist path you go down

Honoring the Legacy of the Spartacus League emphasizes the spread of the revolution and embracing Democratic institutions, which all come together in a brand-new type of subjects, exclusive to this path - namely the:

Volkskommissariats

By spreading Communism to neighbouring countries you can subjugate them to Protect the Revolution after you Embrace Democratic Institutions and protect Civil Liberties. This in turn will let you create Volkskommissariats out of these neighbours. The Volkskommissariats will give you a higher percentage of their industries and manpower to their Overlord, namely you.

29_german_alt_history.png

The Volkskommissarit will strengthen its Overlord’s industries and military

You can also choose to develop your Volkskommissariats’ industry, which in the end will boost your own production. You can also help Instill German Discipline in your subjects, to make them a more effective fighting force

30_german_alt_history.png

Boosting your Volkskommissariats will inevitably strengthen you too

And in the end, you can choose to integrate any Volkskommissariats and create the German Socialist Volksunion. But what if you want more action? What if you don’t like taking your time map painting? What if you’re the impatient kind who just wants war? Welcome to the-

Proletarian Dictatorship

31_german_alt_history.png

The Proletarian Dictatorship resembles the other branches more in the sense that you get to gobble up a bunch of nations

This branch is more straightforward and to the point compared to the Legacy of the Spartacus League with its ability to set up Volkskommissariats; here you simply apply superior forces to conquer other nations. Yay! But before you can start your world-conquering rampage you have to sign a Defense Treaty with the Soviets to exchange mutual guarantees with each other, and after that, there’s just one more step; carve Europe into Spheres of Influence. Divide Europe into your respective playgrounds, where you’ll relinquish control over the East but have the West all to yourself. How fun! This will mean that it becomes more expansive for you to try and take any state that resides in the other’s influence.

32_german_alt_history.png

The Spheres of Influence will divide Europe between you and the Soviets

Okay, you must be getting tired of reading about how to turn Communist, or thinking about if you want to protect Eastern Europe from the greedy Soviets, or if you want to gobble it up yourself. We’re nearly done, let’s just look at some pretty pictures before saying goodbye.

Country Leaders

33_german_alt_history.png

Feast your eyes on some (but not all) of the new country leaders you can get with
Götterdämmerung

There might be some more surprises besides these, but the only way to find out is to play the game once the DLC has been released.

Wouldn't it be more appropriate to rename it to "Katerynoslav"? I do agree that it should become Dnipro, though the former is the pre-Soviet name of the city.

It's rather odd that Donetsk is even in use, considering the pre-Soviet name was "Yuzivka".

In this case, why would an anti-Soviet regime use a calqued form of "Krasnodar"? "Katerynodar" would likely be the name it would take. It just doesn't make sense in a Ukrainian State aligned with the Kaiserreich to use Bolshevik names.
I'll tell you more, after 20 years of Ukrainian emigration, there is no point in using the names of the Russian Empire, especially since Ekaterinodar and Ekaterinoslav are named in honor of the one who eliminated the Zaporozhian Sich of the Russian Empire and took away the privileges of the Ukrainian Cossacks (they made the King of Ukraine a descendant of the Cossacks).

Regarding Dnipro and Donetsk. Both cities are named after the rivers on which they stand. (Donetsk is named after the northern Donets).
Yuzovka is named after a British magnate. After liberation from Soviet occupation, there is no point in thinking about returning such a name.

About Ekaterinodar: I think either Chervonodar or Kubansk. The region itself should definitely be called Kuban.

I simply want to stress again that in 1936, Germany hasn't been a Kingdom in centuries. Do change that name. ‚Empire of the Germans‘ sounds feasible. Only because our modern understanding of Empire/Reich doesn’t align with simply some subordinate entities (the states, federal countries, whose major ones were Kingdoms already) to be ruled by an overarching supreme (e.g. Emperor) entity, even if they are geographically rather restricted, this name is not plausible at all.

Along those lines, also my admonition to please not use the democratic Germany flag with the prussian eagle. The south german states would rather be anschlussed by Austria than have this to happen...

Also a republican focus is very much needed, if necessary with another civil war like the Communists. There were enough anti-monarchists to give this a shot. Especially if you have to decide between conservative tendencies and liberal leanings. Liberal leaning would seem like the perfect point to start limiting the power of the king. Kicking out the King with blood and steel would be epic as well though.

I don’t know if I got this right, but the Brest-Litowsk focus should create puppets, securing industry and resources for Germany (just like the Volkskommissariats do ironically), and not just annex those territories. I hate to see the AI annex swaths of Russian steppe, so I don’t want a focus creating this political and administrative nonsense.

Coinciding with that, please, please, please implement the Wettins as rulers of the United Baltic Duchy, and have them rule a polish puppet state of Saxony if monarchist Poland conquers their territories.

The option (similar to Yugoslavia) to voluntarily balkanise in HRE fashion into the German states would allow for some epic (especially mulitplayer) play throughs as well (with the option to keep a full prussia or split that again to a degree into its predecessor states, like Brandenburg, Cologne, Hannover, etc.).

I also don’t like that these monarchists are so heavy on Prussia. Some alternative for other dynasties to rule would sound sensible to me, since the Hohenzollern screwed up big time.

The third son of the last Saxon King Prince Ernst Heinrich, was considered at one point President in Weimar times (different office than chancellor today, they called it substitute emperor). (Read his autobiography for validation (German only): https://archive.org/details/meinlebenswegvom0000erns)

To add him as one of the alternatives would be more than plausible for many reasons:

- he fought valiantly in WW1 (military would be more likely to be on his side)
- he was member of the Stahlhelm (paramilitary organisation in Weimar times), with whom he attempted an own resistance against Hitler, but did not succeed.
- he considered himself a democrat in Weimar times (thus asked to be Reichspräsident)
- he had very good connections to army officers (Bock and Kluge, as example, partly since the main army academy was in Dresden, his hometown, capital of Saxony, and his fathers residencial city)
- he was knowing of Valkyre but hesitated to join (knew Goerdeler personally)

Making him a figure of resistance perfectly uniting the military, monarchism and democratic tendencies in one person.

Please take the small effort to intergrate him as option for the monarchist compromise!

Proposal: change Adenauer's picture, which is from 1952, way after the end of the game, to this one, from the early 30s, when he was Major of Köln, to better represent the alternative path of history where a younger Adenauer becomes Chancellor after deposing the NSDAP without outside intervention. IK it's a minor change and a cost pay the artist who does these pictures, but I think it would be a nice detail.

This flag is only if you choose to install the Military Dictatorship - Wilhelm II retains the same old flag and country name

Hmmm that is good information! I'll think it over, thanks for pointing it out to me

Just a few suggestions here, as I agree that the Kingdom of Germany has strange connotations and also feels rather out of place when it comes to name conventions. Personally, I would go with something like Bundesreich (basically meaning Federal/Federated Realm). First of all, it is a play on Bundesrepublik (Federal Republic), implying at its federal and more democratic nature, second of all, it's more in line with other namings, like German Reich, German Kaiserreich etc.

Moreover, when it comes to German Kaiserreich, I find it a strange choice to apply it to the Military Dictatorship route instead of the main Kaiser path, because Kaiserreich essentially means "Emperor/Kaiser's realm". It's basically counterintuitive, the main Kaiser path gets a more generic "German Empire" title, whereas a Military Dictatorship gets one that is heavily focused on the Kaiser. Personally, I would either switch them, or give Kaiserreich to the main path and give something else to the MD path. The choice of flags is fine though as far as I am concerned.

Very good trees, but I have a few suggestions that IMO would make them even better.

1. There should be the option to make Wilhelm III the Kaiser outright. Giving the throne back to Willy II would be a quite radical idea, and even the man himself never expected to ever hold the throne again, expressing in his memoirs the hope that his son or grandson would eventually regain the throne. So IMO the the three options should be restore Wilhelm II (increases war support but decreases stability), crown Wilhelm III (increases stability), or establish the junta.
2. For the democratic path, the crown should not be given to crown prince Wilhelm, but to his son Prince Wilhelm of Prussia. The Oster Conspiracy wanted to place the younger Wilhelm on the throne as Wilhelm III (since his father never actually held the throne), and since the democratic path is basically just the Oster Conspiracy two years early, I think that would make the most sense. Also, as others have said, calling Germany a kingdom makes no sense, and I doubt any Hohenzollern would have accepted the crown unless they got to regain the Imperial title. If you want to call it something else I would suggest calling it the "Empire of Germany" or the "Empire of the Germans". I'm fine with having the schwarz-rot-gold as the flag, that I think is plausible for a more democratic German monarchy.
3. The neutral German Empire, and maybe the democratic German Empire as well, should have the ability to core Luxembourg if they take it over. Germany had planned to integrate Luxembourg directly into the empire as a constituent grand duchy should they have won, so it would make sense.

Würtemberg and Bavaria were candidates aswell
I really don't think they were. Do you have any source on that? I'd love to find out more.
Generally speaking, it wasn't really possible to crown any German for a king of Poland at the time as the Germans were for obvious reasons not very popular among the population. Von Wettins were the only possible choice among the German dynasties as they were chosen in '3rd May (1791)' constitution to inherit the crown in case Stanisław I Poniatowski dies childless, but then the 3rd partition happened.
If it wasn't von Wettins, then we have a Polish Habsburg. I really don't see any other likely candidate, if it was up to the Poles to choose.

1. i also think ingame Wettin should be the option for polish king we should have, but within germany during ww1 the german kings still argued who should be king and they did not saw wettin as the only option.
i read it the first time in some book that i cant find anymore but:
German candidates for the throne were disputed between the royal houses of Saxony, Württemberg and Bavaria.[16] Bavaria demanded that their Prince Leopold, the Supreme Commander of the German forces on the Eastern front, become the new monarch.[17] Württemberg's candidate Duke Albrecht was considered suitable for the throne because he belonged to the Catholic line of the house.[18] The Saxon House of Wettin's claim to the Polish throne was based on three previous Saxon rulers - Electors Augustus the Strong and Frederick Augustus II and King Frederick Augustus I of Saxony - having ruled over Poland before.

Because of his position, Leopold was a potential German candidate for the throne of the puppet Kingdom of Poland."

Edit:
but i think as germany we should have in general 2 options for the puppet kingdoms/duchies:
German monarch or local ruler/monarch
- Finland: House Hesse
- Baltic duchy: House Mecklenburg
- Lithuania: House Urach
- Ukraine: Habsburg
- Poland: Wettin
- Belarus should have the option to be either a seperate kingdom/duchy or to be part of Lithuania to mimic the medieval Grand duchy of Lithuania

i think it is important to keep in mind that nothing was final at that point, it wasnt even clear how poland would look like because it was still disputed of what germany should annex and what poland would keep, while the wettins had the strongest claim it doesnt mean that the other kings would simply accept it especially if they had more success and influence in the military campaigns in the east.

Hey, some campaigns reach that far! ;)

I think there are a number of people who have the "portrait is a bit outside HOI4's timeframe" attribute. Could be wrong, though.

I want to criticize the portrayal of Rosa Luxemburg and the general use of "dictatorship of the proletariat" as being synonymous of "dictatorship of communists." That isn't how communists use the term. The term has appeared a few times in paradox games, most of the time either being kinda vague or used in the way it is used here and in Victoria 2. I don't want to argue on whether communism is democratic or not, that inst the point. But focus trees are written from the perspective of the "player," aka, written with the same view of the path as that path's ideology. (Such as how America has a focus that says, "
De-Regulate the Banking Sector
Following a correction in the financial markets that is perfectly normal in the economic cycle, previous governments have instituted quite unreasonable constraints on financial activities. While no doubt well-intentioned, these restrictions clearly do more harm than good."
This could be correct or incorrect economics. That isn't the issue, but that is still something that conservative economists actually believe for the most part). The dictatorship of the proletariat, in Marxist terms, is the dictatorship of the proletarian class over the bourgeois class, meaning political power is deprived from the owning class and given to the working class. The ideas of the Spartacus league were exactly this, with the working class democratically electing leaders and deciding things among themselves. Ergo, the focus "dictatorship of the proletariat" being juxtaposed with "revive Spartacus ideals" is not accurate.

Additionally, in the dev diary you say Rosa Luxemburg, "in particular believed in Democratic institutions and that Communism should use those venues to gain power." There are, in my view, three readings of this.

1.It is poorly worded, but saying correct things.

Luxemburg believed that the communist party should participate in the German elections in order to gain popular support and other boons. If that is what is meant by "gain power" then that would be correct. However I am not inclined to believe this since it is juxtaposed to "while liebkneckt believed in the proletarian revolution."

2.It is incorrectly describing her opposition to Leninism, democratic centralism and the vanguard party.

This, I think, is the least likely option since it requires massive back bending. However to elaborate, Luxemburg was against the "authoritarianism" of Lenin (there are some semantics at play here to simplify things I don't wish to elaborate on.) Against the party state and democratic centralism and such. This could be what you are referring to with the "democratic institutions." However, the terms "gain power" and the previously mentioned comment about liebknekt leaves this even less likely.

3.You want to portray her as a democratic socialist.

This is simultaneously the least charitable but most likely option, given that is the literal interpretation of the quote. The problem is that this is unbelievably incorrect.

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not here to argue whether communism works or whatever, but the simple fact is that is not what she believed. She also believed in the proletarian revolution. That is why she was murdered by the Friekorp, along with Liebknekt. Simply read her works on reform vs revolution and the reasons why she broke with the SPD to begin with.

The problem is not that I am some raging communist who is annoyed that you're misinterpreting my waifu. The problem is that these are very simple things to research. Simply reading some Marxist pamphlets (or better yet, a book) would tell you what Marxists actually believe very quickly. And the issue with Luxemburg is literally on her Wikipedia page. It damages your credibility for historical representation if simple information like this is ignored.

Especially as Luxemburg wasn't opposed to revolutionary communism, as she died fighting for a communist revolution (or "proletarian revolution" as paradox calls it here), if they wanted a DemSoc reformist why not go for one of the Left Com factions (or someone from the SDP or USPD) rather then a Revolutionary Classical Marxist

yes, Mecklenburg-Schwerin is the historical precedent for the Baltic Duchy, but the Wettins were promised to receive the Baltic Duchy in personal union after the war, to give the industrial juggernaut Saxony some agricultural counterbalance (as you can read in the autobiography of Prince Ernst Heinrich, son of the last King of Saxony: https://archive.org/details/meinlebenswegvom0000erns)

—> Baltic Duchy = Wettin
Yes a s no. I am oretty sure if the wettins got poland in this szenario already they should definetly not receive the baltic duchy aswell. But if poland gets completly annexed or given to another house then yes

I’d also ask for fixing an inconsistency regarding South Tyrol‘s occupation status and for making it a core for the German Reich and Austria in Götterdämmerung:

South Tyrol isn't correctly portrayed as an occupied territory/ colony affected by resistance but instead as core state for Italy despite the vast majority German population, the notable South Tyrolian resistance (which eventually forced Italy to grant South Tyrol autonomy) and Greater German stance of the population. In the latest pre-war census I could find the population was 75.9% German in 1921, that‘s an ethnic German population share even higher than current Germany(only 70,3% without migration background in 2023) !
The occupation system is already in place for the other Italian colonies, most notably Zadar/Zara despite more than 70% of the population there actually being Italian at the time, why not this one? For Zadar/Zara it could even be reasonable to set it as Italian core instead considering the Italian majority ?

For example in 1921, italian fascists attacked the traditional German Trachtenumzug procession with clubs, pistols and hand grenades, murdering 1 and injuring ~50 Germans, doesn't seem like you would treat your core population this way eh?

It's also not even shown in the occupied territories tab as returnable to Austria last time I checked, whereas the Dodecanese can be returned to Greece.
And neither Austria nor the German Reich have it even as their own core last time I checked, which consequently also should be fixed in Götterdämmerung!
Please consider fixing this Thank you!

I’d also suggest in the new focus trees for the German Reich and Austria to add focusses for regaining their core South Tyrol peacefully or militarily

Sorry for the super late question but i wanted to ask if monarchist germany would have more old guard generals that It can recall to service like for example Ernst Rudiger von Starhemberg or ex freikorps officers like Alfred von Randow, thanks a ton in Advance for any possible reply :)

Would also be cool if we could get north italy (Trento) or north yugoslavia (slovenia) in the kaiser path
You literally have a focus called "conquer Italy" in the kaiser Path ^^;
