EU4 - Development Diary - 15th of May 2018

Hello! So today's Dev Diary will be covering the ways to enter the Subcontinent of India. We’ve added two mechanics to help you gobbling up all those new juicy provinces in India if you are coming from distant lands.

First is the new unique government that the true heirs of Timur the Lame can claim, or as we good friends of him like to call him, our good Amir Timur. The Mughal Diwan will give the empire a bureaucracy capable of integrating the vast swaths of lands that lie before it. The reform mechanic replaces the promotion of cultures to one where the nation integrates a culture by assimilating it into its government. Assimilation of a culture happens when the nation have conquered every single province of that culture and that will make that culture a permanently accepted culture of the country.

Though besides only becoming promoted, if the Mughals manages to integrate an entire culture group into their empire they’ll get some small boni from the cultures contribution to the empire's administration. However this bonus is not permanent and is only kept as long as they can keep control of all the provinces.

Keep in mind all values are very work in progress and are very much subject to change and hit with nerf hammers!

The second feature we’ve added is for the Europeans and is called Charter Trade Company. This is a new diplomatic tool which will let you setup a trade company in foreign distant lands like Africa, South East Asia or India. The interaction has a base cost for establishing the expedition to the east. This cost is calculated on your colonial range meaning as you progress in technology it will get cheaper, or if you have modifiers that steers your nation to the more adventurous type. This action can only be used on Trade Company Charter regions and any provinces you gain from this will automatically be made into a Trade Company province.

It’s a small feature, but we put a lot of focus on making sure the AI uses this as one would expect . We did this since we know this has been a major pet peeve of you lot, ranging from it not being worth it shipping your troops over half the world to just simply the AI never does.

So we put our elbow grease on to make it possible to “get started” in the far east and that the colonizers of Europe would understand how to do this. While playing this is how it turned out for me with Spain buying provinces in Madagascar, Gujarat, Coromandel and Portugal in Goa and the Malabar Coast. Also bonus with the Turkish West India Company next to the Spanish Gujarat.

Next thing on the agenda is PDXCON! You should look up the EU4 booth and I'll happily tease you about how cool the upcoming features are
See you there!

Is there a limit of this culture thing for Mughals? canse a really successful who might , eh have ideas to conquer China or Russia...

It will be paid for, but it integrates with the Trade Company mechanic of Wealth of Nations.
Is this precedent for the future? Will other mechanics from previous DLCs be integrated with mechanics from this DLC or the ones after it?

now if only Hormuz, Basra and Aden could be made trade company regions, so that Portugal could successfully repeat its early expansion in those areas as well...

in addition, that the Andamans have been moved from Bengal to Coromandel trade node seems a little odd, especially so considering the lack of connection from Malacca to Coromandel (even though Coromandel now controls islands that literally border Malacca, and are on the way from Malacca to Bengal).

Yes there is the old Trade company mechanic but we have more that we are not ready yet to reveal why though :)
I hope so. Because so far this looks like a cheap bandaid instead of fixing the real problem of India being able tp outblob Europe with their increased Dev in the region and everyone having the same tech because institutions spread so fast as to negate the whole concept of tech penalty.

Interesting stuff. Also I can't help but notice that there seem to be more government reform choices now
- ship symbol in Power Structure had already been shown in a previous DD but wasn't there initially for monarchies
- same for a third symbol in Noble Privileges (forth is Mughal Diwan obviously)
- new third symbol in Bureaucracy (three cavalry men)
- new forth symbol in Administrative Cadre (two farmers)
- new fifth symbol in Deliberative Assembly (but same artwork as forth one, the letter)

Thanks for the quick answer. Sorry for the follow up, but will some European nations keep their claims on India through the missions? One might argue the interaction might not get used if they can just threaten war and take whatever they need the old way without paying a lot of cash.
When was the last time you have seen an EU AI being able to take land from an Indian AI? Most of the time a nation in India blobbed so hard by the time Europe arrives that they basically had to ship their entire army to India to even make a dent thanks to everyone having the same tech.
And now India has even more development.

@Groogy Do you mind telling us the bonuses for a few of the less likely to be assimilated culture groups? Like Mesoamerican or Celtic?

Byzantine: + 0.25 Legitimacy - Kaiser-i Hindi

Only a couple of questions because this looks very promising. Can you only buy ONE single province to get you started or can you buy as many as you can afford? And will the AI once it has bought the first one be capable of sending troops to their indian province to start an invasion from there?

You can buy as many as you want but the AI will get very reluctant if it see you already got a province nearby.

And will the AI once it has bought the first one be capable of sending troops to their indian province to start an invasion from there?
They should be, this is very fresh so we are still observing how the AI acts with the new stuff and tweaks to get it to do what we want.

Please say you updated East India company events for other tags
You half assed religion of monarch as the queen consort won’t change in a number of events, nor an option to get them to convert whilst your king still rules avoiding the event of her secretly believing her old faith.

Depends on whether you count the Ottomans.

So, you can buy land. I’m assuming this is coastal only?

The Mughal Diwan is Mughals only?

Can I buy ports in Africa, China, Middle East (Arabia side mostly)?

What stops an ai declaring war immediately to take it back?

How much can you buy in a Trade Company Region?

I’m assuming ‘Trade Charter Region’ isn’t the same as trade a Company region.

Minimum requirements for buying one of these provinces? (You’ve mentioned European capital already. Anything else?)

Is buying land for charter companies a free update or no

Can you change it from a trade company to a normal province or no

Is there a truce associated with buying land to prevent rapid conquest
