EU4 - Development Diary - 27th of November 2018

Good day all and welcome to a new development diary for EU4. We have by now covered most all of the gameplay content and features coming with Golden Century and the 1.28 Spain Update. Today, let's get to some of the eye candy.

As Golden Century is an Immersion Pack, that means it comes with new unit models built-in. It also contains new music focused on Spain and the New World.

First, let's check out the Units. While the majors in the region already enjoy their own unit models, we reached out to those who have long deserved their own and have added infantry models for Granada, Navarra, Galicia/Leon and Salé. Each get 4 different models, one for each Tier of unit as warfare evolves with the integration of the firearm.

Granada will do well to see themselves into the era where they can use firearms, but at least they'll look dapper until then.

Navarra may have lost her coast, but she gained a good mesh of functional and elegant gear.

Leon and Galicia, the releasable nations from Castile, both share their unit models, but keep a distinct look from their Castilian brothers.

Salé, the potential pirate nation of the Maghreb, already look like they are up to no good, and appear to have already plundered rifles.

Now the plan was to make 5 different unit packs and have Andalucia as our 5th set. As we were concepting these designs though, we felt there was too much overspill between Granada and Andalucia model designs. As such, we decided that Granada and Andalucia would share their models, and we would still make a 5th set of models, but for our new additions in the Caribbean.

Caribbean Pirates themselves have received new unit models, evolving through the ages and, while we resisted the call of Hollywood designs, keeping to a more fitting, if threatening look.

Although the addition of unit models in Golden Century is not limited to the units on land, we have also given the Iberians, as well as the Berbers, their own Ship Designs. These extend to all 17 different unit models seen in the game.

Let's use the heavy ships as an example, for the Iberians they will get new ship looks from the smallest of Carracks

Similar story for the Berbers.

As a final note, there will be three pretty sweet music tracks added with Golden Century. Sadly I cannot share these in all their glory right now, but we do have a preview of one of the tracks which was played during our First Look stream of Golden Century last week. Check it out here:

(43:30 timestamp for the music)

That's our lot for today. We'll be back next week to shed light on the ten new Achievements which will be added in 1.28 Spain.

EDIT 2018-12-06: CLICK HERE FOR RENDERS!

I personally can understand the grievances put forward by some people, but I also find them a bit nitpicky. This game is - what - 5 years old now? That we are still even getting DLCs is pretty great in my opinion. Though like I said, the grievances put forward about this one DLC in particular may have some merit. I also have a bit of a biased point of view though, so take what I say with a grain of salt, as I would be willing to climb mountains if it meant getting unique unit renders for Andalucia and Granada, this has been a long time coming.

It seems that being civil is not in the stars today. I think it is okay to be passionate about a game you love, but the behavior I'm seeing cannot be described other than bashing and demeaning other people who have different opinions. Of course the devs won't listen to your comments if all you do is be unreasonable. I feel sorry for the people that spent countless of hours into making this immersion pack, even though it isn't a 100% of what a part of the community wanted.

People have been fairly civil about things which they are passionate in the last few devs. No excuse for name-calling, but can you blame them for being a little heated that they've been ignored?

I think it's fair to call out their work as not good enough. Because it wasn't good, it was bad.
Most of the content is based on already preexisting content, Holy Orders are just the same tributttons rehashed. Pirates are Merchant republics with another flavour. And the new mission trees consist of: conquer something, get a PU somewhere, colonize this.
The map rework, in Spain at least, was bad.

I don't want this quality anymore, I want better stuff for the future, and if I need to call them out for realising a bad product I will, because I care. If I didn't I wouldn't even be commenting.

Of course there's been time inverted, the artist have done a good job, I think. But that's the only thing I'm going to praise about this, the artists. The rest, they don't deserve any praise, at least from me. That they've spent countless hours making this DLC doesn't mean that the time was well spent.

But Aztec were already covered!!!! The first years are fun, Isn't it enough to have 50 years at max speed because there's nothing to do??
Max speed as the aztecs is a death sentence :p They are one of the countries I enjoy playing the most when it comes to primitives specifically because the "boring" period of waiting for the Europeans is always filled with war. Sure, it is usually the same wars, repeated 5 times, but still :p I'd love to see them get a mission tree both for actually uniting Mexico, and resisting the Europeans.

Regarding one of those educated proposals, nobody understands that Tenerife is free to be colonized by Portugal, and no developer answered nothing. It has been mentioned in several messages and in different and even individual threads for that topic. It is truly frustrating...

The problem is they dont listen to most of the comments at all, not only the unreasonable. And I agree that some people go a little too far, but do the developers try to understand why so many fan are so upset, not only about this immerson pack, but about the current state of the game? They ignore and dont reply...

Getting DLC is great but this one looks really poor, in the opinion of almost everybody. Maybe our expectations were too high, but the final work is really poor.

If i had a penny for every time i see Portugal colonizing the Caribean,Spain going for Brazil and Africa, and Brittain in Argentina i'd be able to buy every Paradox DLC.

How are we not being civil excuse me? We were promised an Iberian immersion pack. This is not it. 1 or two responses might have been a bit too heated, but you're only making it worse by poking the beehive.

Stop cry and the hate, all know that GC is not the best DLC but the forum is not a football match...be polite.
With time hope you can add some buffs to Spain or Portugal and PDX thx for EU4.
I'll buy the DLC

I cant get excited about DLC's, if they arent actually meaningful.

If buying this DLC means paradox will be able to develop more DLC's like this , then im totaly ok with voting with my wallet.

i dont need dlc's that got made just for the sake of making dlc's.

i want more meat in my pie!

Not at all, but off topic posts, "Omg this is so baaaad" and comments like that will be deleted and the poster warned.

That is not an off topic post. It is not detailed, but, substantively, it is the same as hitting the ‘respectfully disagree’ button.

Personally, if we’re getting a DD about the unit renders, and we don’t get those nice display screens of their progression, I’m curious whats going on.

Hi guys,

The heated discussion goes on. I thought I'd just pop by and say a few things:

- Just because we don't reply specifically to a concern, it doesn't mean it's not being read and understood
- A lot of the stuff in here is repetitions of what's been said before. And we have replied to a lot of the things said before
- It's saddening that there are people so disappointed by the content of this Immersion Pack. We have revised and reacted to some of the criticism, but we can't react to it all
- Personal attacks and discussions regarding developers personalities, skills or qualifications will not be tolerated at all. You are allowed any opinion you want on the matter, but we will not let you spread this kind of toxicity in our forum. This is our workplace.
- We always welcome constructive criticism, but see the first three points in this post

To try and keep a civil discussion going and making sure that additions to the discussion (meaning things that hasn't been said many times before) isn't drowned out, we'll have to be more active with deleting posts.

Foul language, personal attacks and other rule violations will be dealt with accordingly.

Thank you for your time. And as always I'd like to thank you for your passion for our game. It's 5 years old and we are still able to work on it because of you. We appreciate that it's your love for the game that fuels the less constructive and more toxic comments in here. And even though I can understand some of the the heated feelings, I can not tolerate it creating a hostile environment.

Best Regards
BjornB

My point is that this 'beehive' is totally unwarranted, and is exactly the reason the devs are afraid of saying anything. If it wasn't so heated in this thread the devs would probably be replying a lot to what people say.

Sadly, this is the first EU IV expansion that i am not buying, a lot of DLC's from EU 4 had it flaws, but they actually bring a good amount of content, this dlc however is not going to increase much, Pirate Nations who are pure fiction, since any of those in real life would be destroyed by England and Spain when they start to be annoying. We dont get any new game changing mechanic, together with Spain, America would need a rework, making ways of colonization, in theory you could extract a lot from the land ( who happened in real life) which would cause a huge Inflation and corruption over time, delivering a Golden Age who slowly would cripple the country. Or you could do a friendly colonization, when you colonize slowly but in a friend manner ( Fiction, but fine for gameplay purposes).

We should have a rework on America Gold Mines, who would be extracted with immense force, causing amass of wealth, a lot of inflation, a lot of corruption, events, revolts in America, but you cant lose your ground in America, because inflation would kill you without the gold to feed it, you created a monster who will haunt your country. And then eventually, after long years of prosperity, Spain, would not be able to feed itself, and would need to do a Bankruptcy, but not a normal in game one, one that should be ''Colonial Bankruptcy'' which would come with a lot of differences than the normal Bankruptcy.

I gave one example on how things could have been done, but sadly we just received buttons, would be amazing to see Spain rise and fall, just like happened in real life, and when Spain falls, would be amazing the world making a dispute to see who would rule the seas next, maybe France invested a lot in her Naval Force, Great Britain, Venice, maybe even Japan could try to take Spain spot, or maybe even Spain could try to rebuild herself becoming the Naval Might again. But sadly we dont get this immersion, i'll leave this comment, in the hope that, someday, eventually EU 4 give Spain and the ocean the love they need.

Im really looking forward to be playing Berbers with this, espeically Morocco or Tunis.

Not sure if that's what I should be feeling in an Iberian/Spain update

This is totally understandable. I too would think that naming it 'Spain' update is not exactly correct. It is much more focused on naval stuff, especially pirates.
