EU4 - Development Diary - 4th of December 2018

Good day all and welcome to another EUIV Dev diary. We're wrapping up with Golden Century ready for it's launch next week, so there's not much meat to today's diary, but we are going to reveal the 10 new achievements, which will bring the total number to a staggering 295. I've heard that anyone who completes all of them gets their wishes granted, but I cannot comment to its authenticity.

These Achievements will be available for hunters from Golden Century's release on 11th December. While some shouldn't cause sleepless nights for most players, best of luck to those who try their hand at Basque in Glory. Navarra's start is full of danger, but also massive opportunity.

Now, stepping aside from today's topic of Achievements, I'd like to take a moment to address some of the feedback we've been getting during the dev diaries for Golden Century. There have been plenty of concerns raised, indeed very fair ones, regarding Golden Century and the 1.28 Spain Update not matching up with expectations, not having community input taken into account and development generally not being in line with what the community is wanting. There are many other points that have been raised, but I want to draw light to these.

These are very fair points to bring up, and one comment in particular resonated with me, and that is that our plans and what we are developing are often shared so late in development with the community that feedback and suggestions they want to give can't or won't be able to be integrated. This has lead to a lot of people voicing suggestions for features or changes and getting very understandably frustrated when what is delivered does not take it into account.

So after Golden Century launches, we're going to talk a lot more about future plans and what we have in store for EU4 in 2019, sharing our vision of what we want to do with the game and what we want to bring to you, the player. I'll be talking about this at length in the Development Diary following Golden Century, so on the 18th December. Fittingly, it will be the last Dev Diary of 2018, before we take off for Christmas Break. Our ambition is to get our community a lot more linked in with what we are planning, and can give their feedback and suggestions accordingly and within plenty of time to implement. We have also been asked for how exactly we use suggestions from the forums and how to write a good suggestion thread, which is a great idea, and will be part of said 18th Dec Dev diary.

So while the feedback especially last week makes for some humbling reading for us, it's still important, and this is one of the things we're doing about it. There are far more plans in the pipeline, but, well, for that tune in on the 18th.

As for next week, we'll be having an early DD on the 10th, with Patchnotes. See you then!

Again BjornB thank you for answering, it's not something I would expect from any other companies, but I've been craving quality in EU4 for a while and all I get is words, so I'll wait for some concrete actions before I buy the most recent and future DLCs :) Hope you understand!

It is perfectly understandable, and I hope that we will be able to prove to you that we are committed to making EU4 as good as it can be and that you will be more pleased in the future.

Not even a new achievement for Portugal :(

Tell me something new my friend... After that the "new portuguese map" was realesed I wait everything from DEV's.. or better, I wait NOTHING new.. All the sugestions we did abt NI's, about the new provinces in the portuguese map, etc... Just forget it. This "Iberian" expansion was to do some work in Spain, Americas (????? suposed to be Iberian) and Pirates (????? wasn't it Iberian?) Portugal got.. Aveiro and new mission tree and new boats! Over!

I somewhat agree. Paradox took this direction because it's highly profitable. They understood that the majority of consumers enjoys new shiny toys regardless of quality, and the forum represents only a tiny bit of the market, although in my opinion, a more educated and passionate one, but not actually that important in terms of market share.

In stellaris they took another direction and in CK2 did the same ,why stellaris and ck2 take the quality direction and EUIV take the profitable direction?

We will talk more about the future after we release Golden Century. I think we've proven that we are willing to go in and add/adjust things in older Immersion Packs at a later stage. This doesn't mean that we will be able to do it "in a near future" (a very relative term). But it can't be ruled out that it may happen sooner or later.

A lot of saying nothing really. But I really can't promise anything.
Thank you for the reply.
I will keep waiting then.

the discussion in this subforum has become so unbearably aggressive, negative and toxic
————————————————————
Sometimes I can't help but feel, people purposely read what they want to read.

No, I was not saying that. I was not referring to the whole fanbase.

Let me say: it was not specified if you intended the whole forum, people posting in the forum or some of those. So I obviously I moved against a perceived injustice. Glad to hear that you did not wanted to accuse all the people who expressed discontent.

The fact is: this DLC is underwhelming. I think that no one can claim differently. Some consider it more, some way less. But the substance is that. Most things are not necessarily bad as of concept, but are badly implemented. And they can be improved easily, improving the quality of the DLC and the accompanying patch. That’s the burn we feel. But these are things that have been said so many times in the last weeks/days that I don’t want to use further time. There is an entire Megathread on this. And many Suggestion on how to improve, with feedback from many players and forumites.

I'm disappointed that Asturias gets an achievement while Portugal doesn't get a new one. Asturias shouldn't even be a releasable, its cores should have been given to Leon.

The tag of asturias should not exist, the kingdom of leon is the evolution of the kingdom of Asturias, have the kingdom of Asturias in eu4 is anachronistic,is not pausible its an non historical aberration

It's funny read that Paradox talks now about "hear the community" when they decided not accept the suggestion to delay Golden Century to make a good DLC that had really anything about Spain and Portugal, so ¿what does that mean? ¿Does that mean they would dont pay attention again to us or only is the final insult to the spanish customers begining to pay attention after release "our" DLC?

Software companies in general don't like delays. Not one bit. And no matter how much Developers may listen, the guys above or financial managers will just say "What's there is there, just do better with next DLC. The release date stays."
Delays are only an option when there are gamebreaking bugs or the product is a mess, and even then it's only an option that is very often still not taken (thus why so many games and softwares are released in obviously messy states).

The art for this batch of achievements is...oh dear. The look is incongruous with previous achievements...it looks like they've had a photoshop blur filter applied to them. Please bring back the previous artist who did them.

I've been on this forum for years, and I've never seen so much discontent with "agrees" on all these posts. But now I am very much starting to agree. I just realized that Spain and GB's DLC's add almost nothing in terms of actual strategy and depth to play, but IMHO Japan has much more flavor. And correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Spain and GB do rather well in this timeframe? :)

The pattern seems to be that, the Naval Doctrine aside, no attention whatsoever was paid in revamping the experience of playing as Portugal. There's a huge list of things that could have been done:

1) First off the achievements, which could include interesting stuff like, in the style of Basque in Our Glory, dominating the Iberian Peninsula or stealing Colombus' feats or conquering Japan (Portugal did dream of it somewhat)

2) Adding in more important provinces than Aveiro (Braga and Setúbal are HUGE omissions) with historical trade goods

3) Giving Porto and Lisbon characteristic Urban goods (Portugal produced cloth, naval supplies and glass at different points of the game's timeframe)

4) Implementing the Mare Clausum. This is a huge one and it would have been either a great Achievement or a great addition to the Mission tree.

5) Making the possibility of colonising Labrador (not saying this just cause I'm in Canada :D) more interesting either through missions or new tradezone routes

6) Also super important to revamp the National Traditions, which paint Portugal as a pure trader and colonizer (not even the best one in its region), instead of reflecting its starting roots as a Reconquista military state dominated by a land-hungry feudal society with overachieving infantry divisions

So I largely side with the POR players disappointed with this DLC. it's true that even this final Development Diary it looks like Portugal was completely forgotten. Perhaps the ideal would be to make 1.29 a Portugal Patch to address all of this

What he said!

Let's hope for clarity in the feedback process next week and rally behind the many good suggestions made for Portugal. The most significant of them being implemented and I'll be purchasing DLCs again.

A 1.29 Portugal patch would actually make sense. It could also be used to give some flavour to South America which was also very neglected.
It could also be used to readdress the issues with the Spain patch, since these two countries are so closely associated.

Thank you for elaborating. I'll speak for myself here, and I'd say that I completely understand that there are people who feel this dlc is very much lacking in what they would've wanted in an iberia rework. I followed the forum for quite a while to know that a spain rework was really resonating within a substantial portion of the community. I get it.

Usually controversial releases also invite the more aggitated toxic people. Thankfully the mods to a great job of removing the outlandish comments which have no constructive baseline to begin with. These people are, of course, few in number but these kind of posts pretty much provoke all sorts of reactions which distract from the original (constructive) critisisms level headed people are voicing. Hence my point that I think it's a good idea PDX waits a bit until things calm down.

I've kept my complaining on here to a relative low, but I'll also probably be passing on this DLC for the time being.
- Little flavor for Portugal, and I'm married to a Portuguese girl, so any time I play them, I make her happy (conversely, any time I conquer them, I make her sad).
- I really wanted to see some DHE for the School of Salamanca, or some additional flavor. It might be in there, for all I know, and that would likely change my mind on buying it.
- The other concerns that have been repeated here, regarding overall depth for the Iberian peninsula itself, and the subpar responsiveness from P'dox.
- The fact that the DLC is so rushed that they don't even have the usual showcase of the unit renders, like they have since... before EU4's release? Given what month we're in, that really suggests its a cash grab before the holidays (despite having 3 DLCs released in the last 2 months of the year anyway), rushing the DLC out before Christmas.

6) Also super important to revamp the National Traditions, which paint Portugal as a pure trader and colonizer (not even the best one in its region), instead of reflecting its starting roots as a Reconquista military state dominated by a land-hungry feudal society with overachieving infantry divisions

On these notes, yeah, expanding a bit of Brazil's province numbers would be ideal as currently the Thirteen Colonies surpass them in sheer number. It would force Portugal's potential 3 colonists to spend less attention in Siberia and more in South America. It's easy to have all of Brazil colonised before 1650 as it stands.

Also just want to make it clear that its Traditions, and not Ideas, in Portugal that should be Mil, preferably Infantry Combat Ability like it's been suggested in some threads, and that end-game National ideas should reflect the Pombaline period more. There's literally TONS of flavor that can be packed into the POR tag. :D

Another Achievement could have been themed around the Reconstruction of Lisbon (reach 40-50 dev in Lisbon after 1755, for example.) and maybe call it something like "No place for Earth-Quakers" or something.

A 1.29 Portugal patch fixing all the issues with the Iberian Peninsula, plus unique NIs for Brazil, and a redrawing of SA provinces......... a man can dream.

Brazil already has unique National Ideas, it just doesn't have a Mission Tree.

That being said, a Mission Tree reflecting Brazilian claims on Uruguay and Paraguay, not to mention a stronger balkanisation of its coast, would be ideal

I understand that the content of "golden century" is what it is, and that developers can not commit to adding more content for the Iberian peninsula in the short term, for business reasons.

But the fact that a bold step is taken in increasing the transparency of future developments, together with the improvement of community-developer communication, and the recognition that much more interesting content can be added to the Iberian region and that will take into account in the future; It makes me feel that all the past discomfort has ended up being positive for the future of EU4.

I usually just read comments on the forums but it seems the developers are getting a ton of seemingly negative feedback. I just want to say I appreciate the continued development of this game. It’s one of the few that I play. In fact I’ve had to cut back playing it because I am a pianist first and foremost and it’s just too much on the wrists to do both. In any case I am both looking forward to this new patch and at the same time not because it’s less time I can practice.
