Europa Universalis IV - 1.36 & 2023 In Review

Greetings everyone! It’s been a while since the last Europa Universalis IV Developer Diary, but we didn’t want to end the year without reaching out one more time, in order to share with you a retrospective view not only of 1.36 and EUIV: King of Kings after its release, but of what has happened to EUIV in 2023 as a whole. Let’s get started!

King of Kings

Steam Detail Page.jpg

Last week we released patch 1.36.2, fixing several issues reported after 1.36 ‘Byzantium’ release. We’re so far quite happy with the stability and level of quality of this update, so we’ve decided this will be the last patch for it. This doesn’t mean that there aren’t issues that need to be fixed, or that there aren’t going to be any new ones that arise; but we will be tackling them in the 1.37 update, which is planned for the first half of 2024.

Apart from that, we’re quite happy with the reception of the King of Kings Immersion Pack. It has reshuffled new content to a region highly demanded by the community, and we think this is reflected across several aspects, from direct community feedback to the number of players, etc. We’re very thankful for that! And as there were demands for more Middle East-focused content, we'll definitely work on that in 2024.

Domination

Portrait Infographic.jpg

We also released in April the other main Expansion of this year, EUIV: Domination. It was very different from other previous ones, as it was thematically focused on most of the Modern Age great powers at once, for which we created a great amount of content. It was released along with a quite ambitious update, 1.35 ‘Ottomans’, as touching so many different regions and aspects of the game at once made balancing one of the most challenging issues to tackle on it. As we were aware of this, we planned for a longer Post-Release Support, and we were able to release 3 hotfixes and 2 patches up until early July.

Nonetheless, Domination was a total blast for us, as it allowed us to work and update the content for the most important countries in the game, something very demanding, but rewarding as well. And, again, we need to thank the community for the reception of this DLC, as it was a great success!

Music Packs

EventCover.jpg

This year we released two standalone Music Packs. The first was the free-to-download 10th Anniversary Community Music Pack, a remaster of 10 songs composed by Utopia and produced by George Hammond to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the game. The other is Utopia’s Holy Roman Empire Music Pack, which we release this Thursday, December 21st! Great music that comes from the EUIV community itself.

History Lessons

History-Lessons-Japan-keyart-and-logo.png

A new experimental type of DLC that we released in June was the History Lessons for China and Japan. Available in the game’s internal music player, we collaborated with two experienced podcasters, Laszlo Montgomery from ‘The China History Podcast’, and Isaac Meyer from ‘The History of Japan Podcast, to craft them, and approach a new immersive experience for the game - listening to a History podcast while you play it!

10th Anniversary

This year was marked by the great milestone of the 10th Anniversary of Europa Universalis IV. @Johan, the game’s original and current Game Director, made a retrospective of its development back in August. I just want to add on top of that that it’s been a great pleasure and honor for the whole team of Paradox Tinto to have worked on it since the studio was founded, working closely with the other involved Paradox departments.

New Official Discord Server & Grandest LAN

Having the opportunity to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the game, our Community Team organized different activities during the month of August to get even closer to the community. The main one was the launch of a new official server on Discord, making for a new place to engage with other players and fans of the game, and with us, the developers, as well!

Other than that, the community could also celebrate its passion for the game in yet another edition of the Grandest LAN hosted at the magnificent Czocha Castle, in Poland. Our friends at Turbolarp prepared yet another great edition of the yearly EUIV event, and both the players in the castle but also those watching the streams at Twitch could experience another amazing and fun multiplayer experience.

That’s all for 2023, and for today! It’s been an exceptional year for Europa Universalis IV, and all the people working at Paradox Interactive and Paradox Tinto just wanted to thank you all, and wish you Happy Holidays! We’ll be back with new Dev Diaries around February, see you then!

New Zealand wasn't formally colonized until after the game's time frame (1840) and the Maori population was less than 100,000 during the 1800s. Whereas South Africa was settled in 1652 and West Africa was home to several European outposts. In overall it does not add any value to the game's focus and it does not give a comparative advantage to its owners to make it worth fighting over.

Australia is also unnecessarily big. It's multiple provinces have no affect on the games outcome as Australia always tends to end up under one country's control anyways (most of the time Spain or Portugal). By giving more provinces to West Africa and South Africa, you increase competition for trade and naval supremacy in the Atlantic. The Andes mountain range is also missing which would help shape colonizing routes and army movements in South America.

Most likely the developers took liberties with Australia and other places in the region not knowing that they'd be barred from adding more provinces to other regions in the future. In hindsight, they most likely might have not added as much as they did and left some free provinces for other regions to use for map makeovers. There was an excellent mock-dev diary regarding West Africa posted years ago in the suggestions section, that had a very good facelift of the region in terms of provinces and resources. There are province caps on the devs?

I'd much rather keep the NZ provinces, colonized late we may have been but we could still have gotten colonized earlier if history went differently and reguardless of that I play there frequently since I live in NZ.

It's still not a key area or a historically important area to the game's focus and timeframe. If no provinces can be added and the option to reshuffle provinces was an option, taking from low priority areas to high priority areas would be a necessity.

I highly apreciate the very good work on the game recently

What I do not understand is why is there going to be a 4 month total break in Dev Diaries without any reason stated and without this being properly announced (The last sentence of a post that is merely a copy & paste of existing content that is not particular interesting does not really count - in particular since the break already lasts longer than usual after a release).

I understand there is not always (interesting) content to present for weekly Dev Diaries, but 4 months of radio silence is quite a lot ... There may be good reasons for that, but it should be communicated, it is quite annoying to look for the regular Dev Diary on Tuesday and again and again not see it there ...
First, thanks for your kind words. On the second topic, It's not unusual. We need to take some time from a release to the next one, for two reasons: 1. To focus on the Post-Release Support of the current update, something that may take 1-2 months. 2. To start developing new content for the next DLC, so we have something to share with the community. So, this DD break is going to be similar to those after Origins, Lions of the North, or Domination.

@Pavia What is the correct way to trigger a dev, you or anyone else, to comment on something?

The first time I've asked the pause key question was in 2015, so it can't be said that I haven't tried waiting patiently, but that produced no results. Recently I've tried spamming different threads, that does not seem to work either. I even made an almost plausible threat and that got no results either. Given that my messages on the issue have received some reactions, I suppose I would not even be the only one interested in the answer.

Really? I'd prefer to see eu4 continue growing and getting better.
There will be at least 2 more DLCs:
1. Post Mongolian World including Middle East leftovers.
2. South America, including Central America and possibly some Colonial nations.

Another one that is very likely is Minor Powers, basically Domination leftovers like Austria, the Netherlands, Venice etc.

That still leaves North Africa and India unupdated.

So EUV for October 2025 release date for EU1’s 25th anniversary.

It were only a few words, but I really mean them, I can see a clear improvement on the general quality level of the recent releases compared to the probably all-time low of Leviathan (especially regarding the stability / number of bugs).

On the dev diaries: First thanks for the reaction and the explanation. I still have the (very subjective) feeling, that the times of no dev diaries are longer than in the past (and with that I probably think of pre-Tinto times actually). But on the other hand Dev Diaries are sometimes very long now (if you look at King of Kings, each of them is a very long read, as they cover ALL the changes concerning a particular nation (or group of nations). In the past there were usually 2 - 3 shorter ones, covering varous aspects (the first was usually the map changes, which are of course obsolete now). So yeah, change of style - and probably mostly a taste thing to what is preferable.
I see the advantage of this, that a relatively refined version can already be presented. On the other hand, that there is now even less room / time for taking into account feedback and suggestions as a reaction to the dev diary (as most that is presented is already in a late development cycle).

A good filler dev diarywould be some statistics (most played nations, ...), some outlook on the next updates, and similar.

Anyhow, only criticism on a high level.

Some DLC (or free update) covering a lot of the minor minor countries which deserve to be covered even if that was in less definition would be logical.

Something like Finland’s mission tree or less for countries such as Circassia, Gazikumukh, Hizn Kayfa, Ardalan, Trebizond, Theodoro.. Maybe even Avaria? Jaunpur too.

Those come to my mind as I’ve recently been playing in that region for obvious reasons.

I feel like the game has never been better.

The balance seems somewhat great, the improved AI can occasionally really make my life painful (today both QQ and Ajam warned me while playing as Ardabil, while Ottomans enforced a peace later on)

There is so much content now EU5 would take a long while to catch up in a meaningful way. However there are many countries which could still deserve more flavour. I hope EU4 will receive finishing touches before that’ll happen as EU4 is very close to a perfect game.

It was mentioned earlier that Central Asia and South America chiefly would benefit from a lot of attention. There is a lot of Post-Mongolic legacy/heritage which has untapped potential.

The Post Mongolian World + ME leftovers DLC (most likely the next one) will include some of the countries you listed. Hisn Kayfa was basically confirmed on Facebook, while Trebizond and others are possible candidates. Except for Alania of course, because we don't have it as a country.

Brother, you sound deranged. Plausible threats to devs? What is your condition that you think that's a reasonable way to act for a map painting game? Do we need to contact help services?

I meant Avaria. Forgot the vassal’s name haha. Nice to know the little ones will get attention too.

Did you read the threat, did you find it plausible or perhaps humorous?

I actually do think it would be polite for devs to answer questions, and impolite not to comment. I can even be a bit offended if something is promised and not done. If you want do diagnose that as something, then go ahead. If you or anyone else have any input on my question on how to trigger devs into commenting something, please do tell.

Pointing out errors because I have nowhere else to do them, but I think the House of the Rising Sun and Phetracha’s Coup need to remove the heirs, because historically both of these events placed another dynasty in power. Also there are two Meireki Conflagration events (one for Japan and another generic pre-1.35 one for whoever owned Musashi) so maybe don’t make it such that someone who forms Japan gets the same event twice.

Please change mechanic of wars and battles, it start beeing stupid and unreal on middle and late game, I think You should do more like it is in Victoria 3 right now, now is total chaos. You should do a notifications when my enemy plan to attack my army or navy. I can't be everywhere on a map. I need to know these to prepare and react. When times flow please add more units to rent for other nations what fight in war,, 21 in middle time game is nothing. I don't like middle and late game, it too monotonous, all nations are the same, all nations unite in stupid way, even african nations like Kilwa it is too much powerfull, and when You add possiblity to add in easy way edicts in all provinces, now is too much complicated, also You should add button to deactivate all edicts in single button.

I have no desire to play because of the current problems:
  • Sometimes you can not offer condottiers, the game writes "you can not offer condottiers because " yes, that's it, just a space, In addition, often pops up a message that some country would like to hire your condottiers, you try to send, and there is a modifier "no land border" and according to this, even free to hire nothing will not be
  • Sometimes CB Take Mandate of Heaven is missing
  • Sometimes decisions from estate privileges don't show up in the decision list
  • Sometimes you hire a general and the next day he disappears if you attach him to a unit in some inappropriate province
  • Sometimes generals are not displayed in the list of generals
  • AI is still as dumb as before, sometimes it doesn't move, sometimes running back and forth, restart helps
  • The game still starts to slow down a lot if you don't restart for a long time, old problem
  • The description of some government reforms in the game is wrong, the correct one see in the Wiki
And this I only found by accident in a few hours, it's scary to imagine how many more there are
