Götterdämmerung | Expansion Pass

Aaand there we have it, with the release of this video there can be no more subterfuge: our expansion Götterdämmerung drops November 14th.

Of course, we’ve kept this one under wraps for a bit longer despite some … subtle hints, so now is our opportunity to explain a little about what Götterdämmerung heralds, and what else is coming for Hearts of Iron in the near future.

With the above said, I’d like to draw attention to the fact that Dev Diaries and related events will be arriving with high frequency over the coming six weeks - two or three items per week up until launch. This means today we won’t be diving into extreme detail on each of the headline items, but you won’t have long to wait to see more.

Note: The original schedule was changed to swap the Raids and the Small Features DD's to give the Devs more time with the Raids DD

Special Projects
A German themed expansion is something many of you have been clamouring for for many years, and as we’ve been quite clear about in previous roadmaps, we’ve also wanted to work on a super-weapons feature since the release of HoI4. Naturally, these two things made sense to tackle together.

War drives all sorts of technological innovation in an attempt to out-do opponents and although many projects ultimately never saw the battlefield, Götterdämmerung aims to tie together existing research systems with a new experimental research mechanic that allows for both historical and less historical but plausible super-projects to be pursued. The research process will become an important part of gameplay, with scientists, map-located experimental facilities, and supporting infrastructure all combining to produce a wide variety of outcomes that can augment your forces or change the very nature of the war you are fighting.

Military Raids
Of course, the story of experimental project development during the war was one fraught with strategic implications. From the secrecy around the Manhattan project, to the dambusters raids or targeted strikes on important facilities such as Peenemunde, there are numerous examples of targeted military strikes that had a severe impact on the nature of the conflict.

The military raids feature aims to add more narrative to your conflict while remaining an inherently strategic tool in your arsenal. Target experimental facilities, important military installations and more with high-risk, high-reward planned operations across multiple disciplines. We’ve aimed to have as much integration as possible here with special projects: raids will be one of your main counterplays to an opponent scheming to develop their own [redacted].

Germany
Germany will be receiving a totally revised historical national focus tree and a host of new alternate historical paths. We’ll go into further detail about exactly what is coming here, but we’ve put a high premium on retaining the core feeling that Germany’s old tree gave the player: a sense that they are the protagonist in the events leading up to the war; that the conflict revolves around their actions.

Austria
Resist the oncoming storm, cast off the shackles of enforced military impotence and retool your nation around your chosen identity. Forge a new history for Austria free of German control, standing as a beacon of resistance or reclaiming your fractured empire.

Revised Hungarian Focus Tree
A completely overhauled Hungarian focus tree, with a detailed historical revision and a completely unique perspective on reforging the Austro-Hungarian Empire, independent of Austrian content.

Belgian Focus Tree
Resist or welcome German supremacy. Draw on the natural wealth of the Congo and build potential for an African government-in-exile. Alternatively, play as the Belgian Congo, and either support the war effort, or throw off your old masters.

And of course that’s not all. With any release there’s a host of other items that will appear, some small, some bigger, and notably some pretty nice improvements to the way the AI will play on a tactical and planning level.

Expansion Pass

With Götterdämmerung we’ll be trying something a bit new. The release will be part of an expansion pass. Expansion passes are our way of both giving you a roadmap for the content that’ll be arriving over the next few releases, and for letting you sign up to get that content when it arrives with a discount of 20%.

The expansion pass will include:
  • Instant unlock of three new 3d tank models and a music track
  • The Götterdämmerung expansion (Nov 14th 2024) - $24.99/£21.99/€24.99
  • The Graveyard of Empires country pack (Q1 2025) - $14.99/£12.79/€14.99
  • Prototype Vehicles unit pack (Q3 2025) - $6.99/£5.89/€6.99

Now to get ahead of the game here: we understand that this method won’t appeal to everyone. All items listed above except for the first bullet-point will be available for purchase separately as per usual, or in the DLC subscription.

I had my fingers burned with buying Star Trek : Infinite (a very unfortunate name given how long it lasted) and I no longer buy your products in advance nor buy expansion passes. I realise you won't be missing my contribution to your company profits but perhaps others have also lost some trust in you too. All a shame as for several years you produced some of the best games I have ever played. Now it feels like you are milking your customers instead.

I hope that there are country-specific "secret weapons" and that not every country can develop and produce the same weapons. That there is finally a bit of variety in terms of units, ships, aircraft, etc.

I'm sorry but I have to ask this:

Being a person who bought the: Together for Victory, Death Or Dishonor, and Waking the Tiger DLCs, shouldn't I get this pass for free? Or at least a discount? I did lose some money at the end of the day.
Do you ask for a discount on a new car because you bought one from the same company 8 years ago and their new model is an improvement of the one you have? The devs had to be paid for the time they spent on the first product, they have to be paid for the time they spent on the new one.

Why only plausible? :(

Terrorizing the poor AI with something like flying nazi-themed UFOs has always been my dream! xD

I can absolutely, totally, irrestrictly and uncritically understand why we are not seeing content for some nations in the Levant in the current context.
Eh It's not like those colonies were of big interest during WW2, Iraq is alot more interesting since the British actually had to fight some battles against Pro-German Iraqi forces to keep their oil supplies and routes into Egypt secure, and Iran's significance is obvious as well. The most significant thing in the levant region would only be Vichy french Syria and how the allies took it over.

The Habsburg crown prince is Otto, who currently Hungary gets. Can he share both Austria and Hungary? I imagine they insta-merge either way. It's probably why Hungary is included with Austria to begin with..

Obvious candidate for secret German habsburg path is the archduchess Adelheid.

The existence of an Austrian NF tree should make a difference in Historical Mode, because the AI is still going to be building something and training someone, and those factories and units will be gifted to Germany. If it's done properly it might actually weaken Germany, since the Austrian generic AI seems to like building factories.
I mean I think it's probably way too early to jump to conclusions. Unless they have major industrial penalties or manpower penalties, the AI ought to build roughly the same amount of units and factories plus/minus whatever factories they get from their focus tree.

Not to mention for all we know the German focus tree might become even stronger than before.

I'd be more concerned about Germany steamrolling the USSR for the first few patches most likely and being heavily overtuned.

Generally PDX have been quick to step in if the German AI starts struggling to kill France etc. on time at least from what I've seen.

No Czech rework is disappointing with a Austro-Hungarian pack.
I would like the Devs to add the Prague Uprising into the game.
Does the raids mechanic allow for a Pearl Harbor?
Coordinated Strike was supposed to enable Pearl Harbor but it's totally broken and the AI obviously doesn't do it anyway. Even if it worked the player still can't even do it because the AI doesn't station its fleet at Pearl Harbor. There's a mod that tries to model the Pearl Harbor attack and the Pacific War. The lead up to the Pearl Harbor attack and the attack itself could be a very interesting and dynamic event chain or mechanical system.

Really hyped for the DLC, and not sure if you can answer this question yet, but I've hoped for it for years so I'll give it a shot:
Will nukes also get a mechanical rework / revamp in how they work? Or is it just in how you unlock them?
I would hope that atomic weapons actually require Uranium resource in the future as well as a physical research facility or facilities.
a proper carving up of Greece as per the historical occupation which isn't possible currently in the game, as Italy takes it all usually
Same question for Yugoslavia

There was a mod that was on the Steam Workshop that fixed the Axis Balkans occupation to be 90% historical via adding new provinces and altering borders to be accurate to WW2 and using the "Pre-arranged territorial expansion" mechanic that was introduced with BFTB. It was called "Yugoslav State Overhaul". It's gone now though. I actually have a copy of the mod files though. The Devs should have done all this when they released the BFTB DLC.

At long last...

Will this include any of the below hard code improvements?

  1. Making the Airborne information box like amphibious invasions
  2. Penalties for massive, 18+ battalion divisions
  3. Making border conflicts a viable tool/strategy
  4. Making 1-province battles like amphibious landings, and urban combat more realistic
  5. Adding an "Indirect Fire" stat to artillery, similar to "Piercing" or Anti-Air"
  6. Allowing naval blockades
  7. Adding a mechanic to abstract for hourly fuel/ammo consumption
  8. Allowing non-core territory to be returned to all claimants
  9. Terrain Ribbons to go alongside medals

As someone with a specialty in the Congo, I have to say, I'm really looking forward to seeing how you guys handle the governor-generalship of Pierre Ryckmans, the uranium mines and their centrality to the American nuclear program, as well as the Allied infrastructure projects all through the country, to say nothing of the fact that wartime exigencies essentially created a (relatively) highly centralized and borderline autonomous colony in the postwar period which, despite being under colonial rule, had a colonial administration that was very reluctant to return oversight to Brussels.

Can I ask if Austria can annex Bohemia and Moravia after becoming a puppet of Germany, and then become the fascist Austro Hungarian Empire?
And whether it is possible to give independent communist Hungary more road options, such as more interaction with the Soviet left-wing opposition, rather than just restoring Transylvania ,plz
