Götterdämmerung | Expansion Pass

Aaand there we have it, with the release of this video there can be no more subterfuge: our expansion Götterdämmerung drops November 14th.

Of course, we’ve kept this one under wraps for a bit longer despite some … subtle hints, so now is our opportunity to explain a little about what Götterdämmerung heralds, and what else is coming for Hearts of Iron in the near future.

With the above said, I’d like to draw attention to the fact that Dev Diaries and related events will be arriving with high frequency over the coming six weeks - two or three items per week up until launch. This means today we won’t be diving into extreme detail on each of the headline items, but you won’t have long to wait to see more.

Got-Calendar-switched.jpg

Note: The original schedule was changed to swap the Raids and the Small Features DD's to give the Devs more time with the Raids DD

Special Projects
A German themed expansion is something many of you have been clamouring for for many years, and as we’ve been quite clear about in previous roadmaps, we’ve also wanted to work on a super-weapons feature since the release of HoI4. Naturally, these two things made sense to tackle together.

War drives all sorts of technological innovation in an attempt to out-do opponents and although many projects ultimately never saw the battlefield, Götterdämmerung aims to tie together existing research systems with a new experimental research mechanic that allows for both historical and less historical but plausible super-projects to be pursued. The research process will become an important part of gameplay, with scientists, map-located experimental facilities, and supporting infrastructure all combining to produce a wide variety of outcomes that can augment your forces or change the very nature of the war you are fighting.

Military Raids
Of course, the story of experimental project development during the war was one fraught with strategic implications. From the secrecy around the Manhattan project, to the dambusters raids or targeted strikes on important facilities such as Peenemunde, there are numerous examples of targeted military strikes that had a severe impact on the nature of the conflict.

The military raids feature aims to add more narrative to your conflict while remaining an inherently strategic tool in your arsenal. Target experimental facilities, important military installations and more with high-risk, high-reward planned operations across multiple disciplines. We’ve aimed to have as much integration as possible here with special projects: raids will be one of your main counterplays to an opponent scheming to develop their own [redacted].

Germany
Germany will be receiving a totally revised historical national focus tree and a host of new alternate historical paths. We’ll go into further detail about exactly what is coming here, but we’ve put a high premium on retaining the core feeling that Germany’s old tree gave the player: a sense that they are the protagonist in the events leading up to the war; that the conflict revolves around their actions.

Austria
Resist the oncoming storm, cast off the shackles of enforced military impotence and retool your nation around your chosen identity. Forge a new history for Austria free of German control, standing as a beacon of resistance or reclaiming your fractured empire.

Revised Hungarian Focus Tree
A completely overhauled Hungarian focus tree, with a detailed historical revision and a completely unique perspective on reforging the Austro-Hungarian Empire, independent of Austrian content.

Belgian Focus Tree
Resist or welcome German supremacy. Draw on the natural wealth of the Congo and build potential for an African government-in-exile. Alternatively, play as the Belgian Congo, and either support the war effort, or throw off your old masters.

And of course that’s not all. With any release there’s a host of other items that will appear, some small, some bigger, and notably some pretty nice improvements to the way the AI will play on a tactical and planning level.

Expansion Pass

With Götterdämmerung we’ll be trying something a bit new. The release will be part of an expansion pass. Expansion passes are our way of both giving you a roadmap for the content that’ll be arriving over the next few releases, and for letting you sign up to get that content when it arrives with a discount of 20%.

The expansion pass will include:
  • Instant unlock of three new 3d tank models and a music track
  • The Götterdämmerung expansion (Nov 14th 2024) - $24.99/£21.99/€24.99
  • The Graveyard of Empires country pack (Q1 2025) - $14.99/£12.79/€14.99
  • Prototype Vehicles unit pack (Q3 2025) - $6.99/£5.89/€6.99

Now to get ahead of the game here: we understand that this method won’t appeal to everyone. All items listed above except for the first bullet-point will be available for purchase separately as per usual, or in the DLC subscription.

LMAO Vanilla Mp Name a bigger joke, MP mods exist And Will balance the new focus trees ( most Hist games probably wont even use them) So stop complaining about how it will ruin MP when it likley wont. Also if they never added Focus trees to 90% of the countries you listed hoi4 would be dead by now Because lack of DLC and areas to expand the game. More content is not bad Especially when the state of the game as it is Right now is fine. Not everyone plays strictly Hist games either, I would recken Most people dont Always play hist (MP AND SP) Hist Gets very boring after awhile and Nonhist paths are typically the most interesting/Fun. but complaining how it will ruin the balance is just dumb Cause this game really isnt a ww2 Game anymore, Its a sandbox strategy game Set During 1936-1945 Where you can Change the historical outcome however u want using Focus trees.
Most multiplayers do play historical. BUt even then, I only brought vanilla MP because it's something that a lot of people got introduced to game through.

That was never the point though, the point as I outlined in another thread is that Austria is not alt-history, it's two existing paths (Germany and Austria-Hungary) smashed into a single country, while risking interfering with the existing stuff. Austria is uninteresting from a ahist perspective as well, given that everything it offers already exists elsewhere.

>most Hist games probably wont even use them
TFB leaves in the AAT focus trees, why wouldn't they leave in these?
>LMAO Vanilla Mp Name a bigger joke
Red Baron is still a very popular server lmao

Finally, I'm able to enjoy vanilla Germany again!
The expansion pass sucks (3d models, nation pack), but the Götterdämmerung expansion is an instant buy.

I just have one concern: please don't focus too much on the alternative paths and instead concentrate on the historical path!
Make Hitler a more central figure in the historical Germany path with interferences and a political loyalty system for different lobby groups (Wehrmacht, Himmler boys,...)

I would love to see strategic objective choices for the major campaigns, example Barbarossa:
a) Halder-plan: concentrate on HG Centre and focus on taking Moscow early --> Hitler disapproves and you'll suffer some penalty
b) Hitler-plan: advance simultaneously north, centre, south with a focus on the south to capture Donbass and Caucasus --> full Hitler approval with some political bonuses
c) North plan: concentrate on HG North, take Leningrad and then swing south...
Each strategic campaign decision choice should come with a time plan, objectives to capture and reward/punishment system.

It's very telling you didn't reply to any of my balance concerns.

So basically Austria's job should have remained going down the generic industrial branch to give Germany or Hungary free factories when either one was ready to annex them. As it is, the AI sometimes does other focuses that are useless for either annexing nation.
Yes, I think that would be best, if anything they should give them historical scripting that forces them down the industry path ;)

You'll find out on Monday :D

Austria will be presented on October 7th? The day of the GDR? The Workers and Peasants State? The dictatorship of the proletariat? Maybe Arheo is really right that everything is just a coincidence with the data. Garrak the Tailor said...

Back to 3 oct. On that day in 1942, Hitler gave his speech in the sports palace: "We only have to kick in the door and the whole rotten structure will come crashing down." and how will the video open? The Germans were probably successful in the Paradox universe after all. It only lasted 82 years. Where can I collect my prize? ;)

But wait a minute? Why the german kaiser nuke the USA? Was there still a causus belli from the Seven Years' War? Can that be? A Old german flag and prussian flag? Was there a army putch?

What if I told you not everyone plays HoI4 to relive the exact same sequence of events over and over like some sort of Groundhog Day?
Germany being white isn't a different event...

We, the customers, can give feedback and say what we would like, ,but the only *real* input is to buy, or not to buy. That is the only real choice you get to make.
You *do not* get to design the game to your own specifications.
Except I can't, because the mechanics are what sellls DLC, If I wanted focus trees i'd go play RT56. Winning the war as germany is still an althist you know, but whatever. Just know some of us care more about gameplay than clicking the button that makes you a heckin monarchy.

And say I wanted an achievment too, no luck there either.

I also like alt-history, but one point of these forums is to discuss the future direction of PDX games, with the devs reading on. That's all @Giraffus is doing. They're allowed to say they don't like the plans that have been announced.
Thank you

Disappointed that Czechoslovakia isn't there. Hopefully it will get some minor changes, like other trees did in other DLCs.

In the video you said Reichkommisariats will get a re-work too, with this opportunity please add the only country besides Germany to have Reichkommisariats in the East, Romania, a quick add-on the Governate of Transnistria, worth a shot, at least Romania will get a little something out of this too :)
The next DLC imo should be a "Little Entente" DLC where Czecho, Romania, Yugo and maybe Albania, get brand new focus trees, not fricking Afghanistan lol.

From my earlier post about Belgium/Congo/Uranium:

Historical should be quite straight forward. Trying to stay neutral (again), building up the defences at Liege and Antwerp (again). Building the big Eben-Emael fortress to slow the Germans down (and German options to counter the fortress)). The Mechelen Incident should be there. Then there's the entire Leopold III storyline with all the problems he caused. Of course Congo should get some content as well. The Flemish independence movement will provide the path to collaboration and Fascism, while Wallonia could get the communists going for some alt history. NATO and early EU stuff towards the end of the war.

As for the second part, I think the race for the bomb is too simplistic at the moment. I guess most of us saw Oppenheimer by now and I feel the development of the nuclear weapons should be more complex than it is at the moment. Uranium should be added as a resource and developping the atomic bomb should have more steps than just the 1 research. You need Uranium, you need the research, but also the logistics and infrastructure to develop it.

Coming back to Belgium and Congo, the Union Minière company in Katanga was pretty much the only company in the world that was extracting Uranium in large numbers. The Germans took over 1000 tons (or even more according to some sources) of Uranium from Olen factory when they invaded in 1940. Later in the war, the Americans acquired Uranium from Katanga to develop Little Boy and Fat Man.

So probably the Manhattan Project should be expanded on for the USA. The British, French and other allies should also be able to follow up on this. For the Soviets there could be a choice between spying on the Americans and developing their own nuclear program (I somehow feel some accidents should be there for the latter). For the Germans, there should be a choice to use the captured Uranium and fully commit to the Uranprojekt, or neglect it in favor or other war stuff as happened in real life.

Finaly, I think the race to capture German scientists between the USA and USSR at the end of WWII should be a thing, to set up the Cold War for those who like to play a bit longer.

This is amazing ! Can we expect a minor focus tree for Luxembourg similar to the Icelandic one ? What about Czechoslovakia and Slovakia ? Will they have any minor changes made to them ?
That would make Ireland the only European country without a focus tree.

In fairness, it did spend most of its time trying to stay out of the war.

Edit: Apologies, Albania as well.

There already was a little entente DLC, Death or Dishonor. These countries already have all the "content" they could need, and serve their function well in Barb.
Not every country needs to have 10 billion mini games.

While I am happy to finaly see the well deserved Hungary rework, as for thus far I think that the Austrian Focus tree(Empire path, seems a bit small and not really expanded enough as it could be, plus I hope it does add enough content where by the end of 1944 you have stuff to do like colonies or making mexico, spain or the benelux back as your Imperial subject or allies).
Agreed however there is another joint focus tree for the entire Austro-Hungarian empire/danubian federation/etc so there should be more content we haven't see yet. However I do share your concerns it looks very thin focus tree with small paths.

I do hope you include a bit of new economic terms like corporatism considering that Austria was historically in that period a corporatist state but unlike italies fascist corporatism it was catholic corporatism which included Zünfte/guilds (I assume if A-O existed would have too supported this form of economy... considering that the Habsburgs still are known as devout catholics).
There is a focus called insitute corporatism in Hungary's focus tree so I would assume they would add something like that in the fascist autria focus tree.

There is indeed more content you haven't seen yet, and some paths are available to more than one ideology :)
