HoI4 Dev Diary - Achievements

Hello, and welcome back to another Dev Diary from the snow-stricken city of Stockholm. Today we will be talking about that quintessential feature completionists like myself simply crave whenever a new DLC is released: achievements. :D

This batch consists of 21 new achievements, most of which relate to the new countries and mechanics, though one is dedicated to the 2018 PDXCon HoI4 Challenge (30 Minutes of Hel), and another was a brilliant suggestion by a viewer of Daniel and myself's playthrough of the new British focus tree (Britzkrieg).

In addition to adding these new ones, I've made some adjustments to the more 'grindy' achievements that were added to Waking the Tiger. Having myself completed every single achievement in the game, none annoyed me even nearly as much as Battlecry and Awake and Angry. To make these less of a 'conquer the whole world three times over' pain to get, I've added exclusions for the European enclaves to the requirements of these achievements. It now will no longer be necessary to reclaim Guangzhouwan, Macau, and Hong Kong to get them :)

Now, on to the new achievements:

That was it for today (though not for this week ;) )! We hope you'll be enjoying hunting for them. Let us know which you're most excited about, and don't forget to watch Daniel leak more stuff in today's stream at 4PM CET!

I really don't understand why you have decided to start ranting about slavery. I don't know which part of my post triggered this, as I never mentioned or even alluded to slavery. All I said was that I don't like the fact that the CSA hasn't been a focal point in MtG and hasn't been designed as a playable revolter with its own focus tree / events and artwork. It's just there for the player to fight as part of a civil war, and Southern secession (the CSA's historical raison d'être) and fascism have been (very) wrongly conflated in-game.

This is not the place for a debate about slavery - again, a subject I never mentioned.

So winning a free and fair election is a declaration of war and a violation of states rights?
The South was afraid that the North would ignore the Constitution since it was already violating Article 4 of the US Constitution which would make the Union null and void so the North (which was controlling the political scene) could do whatever they wanted to do to the South and to take a quote from the Constitution "The states rights shall not be infringed".

But the Confederate constitution did. In fact, one of its six articles is dedicated almost exclusively to enshrining slavery as a supreme law.

This mythology that it was a myth that the Civil War was about slavery is very irritating just because of how counter-factual it is and how thoroughly debunked the claim has been for many decades now. It's true that the Civil War dramatically changed the scope of federal power, but it's rather strange that if the war was truly about "states rights" that the Confederacy itself became a mirror image of the North in this regard.

Sorry for quoting you specifically James because I doubt you really had anything to do with any of this, but it was a useful sentence to begin from.

Anyhow lets not let this thread get derailed by a debate about the Confederacy, there could be another thread on that.. a dev diary isn't the best place for it.
Yes the Civil War was largely about slavery but the fact is that States' rights also had a lot to do with it as the Southern fear that abolishment of slavery would be forced on them thereby taking away some of their freedom and the South was already starting to abolish slavery on it's own since the cotton gin was invented which largely eliminated the need for slaves and most states just tolerated slaves anyway.

I agree with you and @Iskulya and will no longer comment on the matter.

You basically just admitted slavery was the only “state right” they were afraid of losing...

Also there is no evidence that the south was abolishing slavery, in fact it was still expanding as children of slaves would still be slaves

hm if they make a stream tomorrow to announce release date they are gonna release tomorrow or next week. Maybe just a play-through tomorrow.

First I thought the same, thanks to all the shoe-eating discussion they just release it without ever giving a release date and we will see a sneaky ninja-release tomorrow.
Which would be genius, imo. But then I remembered they didn't give us an AI DD yet, so maybe next week?

Also one DD on great power mechanics is missing, they told us you can take over your faction but the advantages haven't been explained. On the other hand they might have finished and are now just releasing. Wouldn't make much sense to delay release just to churn out more DD for a few more weeks. We shall see. I have to teach till 1900 in any case so if they release I will have to wait till later evening to dive in anyways.

I feel like all this speculation about it releasing tomorrow or even next week is going to end in disappointment. I really don't understand what all the teasing was about in today's stream if all they are doing is announcing a release date tomorrow and the game isn't coming out for another 3-6 weeks, which seems the most likely scenario. It's just going to create disappointment. I would love to be wrong and see it come out sooner, though.

The South Will Rise Again!

I have only 2 questions:

1. Will we see some new scripted alternative paths for ai?

2. Is there a chance that the southern part of after-war polish border will be adjusted (again) for next dlc so that the german-soviet border can be historical again?

You're being a bit melodramatic.

For one, a few simple sentences hardly qualifies as a "rant". Second, if you had bothered to actually read what I said, and clearly you didn't, I wasn't accusing you of anything, but just using the sentence as a relevant touchstone for what others were saying. Thirdly, nobody is "debat[ing] about slavery", we were talking about the CSA. Given that the CSA, or something with the pretensions of it, makes an appearance in Man the Guns, it's absurd to say that it's not really relevant to the game or the DLC.

Just by making that accusation it's clear you just want to shut down discussion by stirring up drama with that strawman because nobody is debating slavery; again, the subject is Confederacy and whether it's even sensible that any kind of fascist or even right-wing group would have appropriated it in the interwar era. I think it's hard to argue that this isn't a valid subject for discussion given that there is solid documentary evidence that American fascists of the period rejected the legacy of the Confederacy.

That's all I'll say on the subject here, it's getting a bit off topic.

Swedes aren't all that religious as far as I know but one achievement involves Hel and another a narrow path. Reminds me of Matthew 7:13.
