HOI4 Dev Diary - Back from PdxCon

Hi everyone! We are now back from PdxCon (most of us) and landing in our new offices, so brace for a ton of pictures! Oh and we announced the new expansion! If you haven't see the trailer <3 start there:

PdxCon 2019
PdxCon this year was imo one of the best ones so far. It was held in the Funkhaus Berlin. This place was super cool, and was basically the center of all radio and recording for DDR from the 50s until the german reunification.

We had announcements (among them CK3 and La Résistance!), LAN parties, presentations and Q&A sessions with fans as well as a scramble-for-africa multiplayer game on sunday. Most of all though it was super fun to chat with fans and modding groups (several ones were there!)

Animals in the audience?

In our booth we ran a challenge which we plan to be an achivement for LaR, just like we did with 30min of Hel last year. It was called "Don't Die for your Country" and was to capitulate France and Poland as Germany with as few of your own casualties as possible (and no using paratroopers). The final score was 475 casualties :O

@Voigt was the winner, and you can read about how he did it here.

We had a ton of fun and basically just crashed when we got home ;D it felt a lot like coming home from a music festival :)

La Résistance

So 'ere we go... Our next expansion is now announced: La Résistance!

Its main theme is Espionage and Resistance and the main country focuses are France, both sides of the Spanish Civil War as well as Portugal. We will be starting off by going through espionage in the coming weeks in details
For more info check out the announce post and there will probably be uploads of videos from PDXCon and my talks popping up on youtube in the near future.
also here is a fresh unused screenshot to wet your appetites...

Congeatulations to the PDXCON challenge winner, @Voigt ! Nicely done :)

I must admit, offices look quite amazing - WW2 operational map on the glass looks awesome (not to mention the bar). I'm quite jelly now :)

Cheers for the DD/PDXCon snaps Podcat, looks like a sensational time :). Would probably suggest watching your back around @Bratyn though, he looks like he likes the idea of being in charge! Thought the streams I watched were great - am always impressed by the combination of sincerity, slightly-awkward-geekiness (this is no criticism coming from me :D) and enthusiasm . Not a HoI4 thing, but you should tell @Johan that it's a bloody good job he didn't stop making games - I'm quite sure there's more than a few quality games up his sleeve (and Imperator is looking in much better shape post-Cicero, which is a sign that the fundamentals were in pretty good shape, even if there were some improvements that could be made from 1.0).

For the most appropriate PDXCon/La Resistance naval image I could dig up quickly, here's a picture of three of the ship's company that travelled on the Krait to plant limpet mines on Japanese ships at Singapore, kicking back at Brisbane after a job well done - it's got post-sabotage celebrations, beer and enthusiasm!

This is just the short announcement talk. There is a longer 20+ minute one as well that I dont think is on youtube from us yet

If my Youtube-fu is up to scratch (and there's no reason it should be) this link should take you to your talk :). If Youtube-fu doesn't work, it's at 4:26:20. It's been up since I think at least Monday, but it's a bit hidden in everything else at the moment.

Because of the Spanish Campaign and its geographically coincidence

and also for the introduction of espionage remember Portugal was the main places where there was a very intense spying activities and subverted actions during WW II for both the allies and the Germans precisely because of their supposed neutrality

Well NKVD was broken op, it spreaded everywhere :D MI6 and MI5, manhatan project https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NKVD

NKVD (later KGB) belonged to the Ministry of Interior and therefore it's main effort was inside the Soviet Union, where it included internal security troops, border guards, counterespionage etc., although it's field of operations was strongly enlarged outside of the SU also.

GRU belonged to the Mininstry of Defence and it's main focus was in foreign military intelligence (although it has done other things also). If foreign military personnel was recruited as a Soviet agent, they belonged to a GRU handler, not NKVD. A well known (cold-war era) GRU spy who was caught was Swedish Stig Bergling.

Board games can be 'patched', it is called errata.

Errata are to fix typos, but even larger rules changes are limited by not being able to change the board or cards. It's also frustrating. I have Churchill and twice had to reprint the entire rules because they revised it twice, one of the revisions really changed the end scoring in a way that changed the tension of the game.

Maybe a question, given that France is core of this expansion, will the Anglo-French Union be more polished, in sense of carrying over ship designs (so existing French ships can be upgraded), and maybe some research transfer (so that Union does not suddenly forget how to make tanks French were making), please?

Oh and regarding new office, it reminds me of the C.J. Cherryh's Regenesis, where second Ari builds a very customized building wing for both apartments and working spaces for people most close to her, on one hand very secured, on other hand very custom tailored to each inhabitants to keep them inspired... That said, do you have aquariums and indoor waterfalls and such there? :)
Anyway very cool space. I guess it's also sort of recruitment post :)

La Résistance? The most efficient resistance movement during WW2 was arguably the communist partisans led by Tito in Yugoslavia.
The title of the DLC is purely a marketing issue, the resistance rework affects every nation, including Yugoslavia, and not just France.

With Spain and France getting new trees, Italy would be perfect for a Mediterranean-focused expansion, but it seems it won't be the case here... so the question everybody should be asking is: when we'll get Italy revamped?

Clearly this patch isn't about a Mediterranean expansion, since none of the Mediterranean fronts were addressed, but about covert operations, espionage, sabotage and guerrilla warfare, the main focus is around the Spanish civil war and the countries involved in it (yes, Italy was also involved, but they can already influence the war in game, while France and Portugal couldn't do much about the civil war, despite being major influencers irl). The region reworked is more accurately defined as Western/Atlantic Europe.

To answer your second question of "When will Italy be revamped?" I'd say in the actual Mediterranean expansion, since Italy was the main player in the Mediterranean fronts such as Greece and North Africa, and of course Italy itself. Greece is an interesting minor who managed to fight off a major, thus is deserving of a focus tree in that DLC, and North Africa is currently an insignificant theatre with little strategic value that usually gets steamrolled by Italy or the U.K imo it needs some more flavour.
Other minors who also made geographical sense and synergise well in this hypothetically dlc would be Bulgaria and Turkey.
