HOI4 Dev Diary - Back from summer!

Hi everyone! The whole team is now back from vacation so its time to kick off dev diaries again!

At the moment we are all working on an unannounced expansion and the 1.8 Husky Update and work is progressing well, so we can start sharing some of it with you guys and gals again. The expansion will remain unannounced until PDXCon so look forward to that. Or better yet, come join us for fun, reveals and gaming in Berlin.

Just because we can’t give the full overview yet doesn’t mean we can’t start revealing stuff in true Paradox tradition, so next week we will be taking a look at France which is getting a full revamp. We are going to be doing our focus trees a bit differently this time around, so expect new nations to get covered in two diaries rather than a single one to better match their scope and structure.

I don't have a lot for today, and spent all my vacation moving and not going to any cool WW2 places, so I will end this diary with a cool WW2 related vacation pic from @Bratyn. Bonus points if you can spot where its from :)

See you all next week for something a lot more meaty!

I think practically in a subtle way podcast has just revealed the next dlc would be set in the Mediterranean and that surely Belgium will also have its own foci by logic.
I believe some new mechanics that would have to come in this dlc is the subideologias issue since the Spanish case will surely be touched and to make credible and credible it is impressionable this new mechanics should appear

This expansion will not be USSR. Soviet deserves a expansion pretty much for itself and fits better with some mechanic stuff I got planned for the future rather than now. I felt it was good to get this out of the way early because I know a lot of people wanna see Soviet stuff.

That is utterly disappointing considering how shallow of an experience Barbarossa is in vanilla HoI4.

There are a couple of major mods out there which have completely revamped the Soviets and Barbarossa: "Hearts of Oak", "August Storm", "Total War" to mention some.
They typically increase the effects of winter and give Germany one grand land offensive each year in summer and the Soviets on per year in winter with temporary bonuses each. That works very well in terms of the dynamics of the campaign.
As Germany you have the same problem that OKH faced in October 1941 for instance: shall I continue the push towards Moscow or dig in for the winter in well prepared lines and favourable terrain? If you push one bridge too far, you risk running into the Soviet grand winter offensive and get annihilated.

I would highly recommend to try some of these mods and evaluate what could be incorporated into vanilla.

The bottom line though: the war in the east was the central and the most decisive theatre in WW2 and it sucks that after 4 years of development, the time for a major overhaul of that very theatre still has not come? Maybe there's a good reason for that, but it would certainly help to communicate that reason.

A France rework, eh? Given that the Dutch focus tree seemed a bit of a test-run for an eventual French one, I'm not very surprised. It's unfortunate that the USSR will have to wait, but I suspect that maybe the devs want to implement some mechanics now that could serve a later USSR rework as well. It'd have the added benefit for them of not having to do too much in one go.

1. Second Sino-Japanese War is still broken. Japan wins a war in 1939 that it historically lost in 1945.

2. Denmark should capitulate after one VP Province is grabbed unless influenced otherwise.

3. The reason Hitler historically invaded Norway (to have a warm water port to get Swedish Steel) is still absent from the game.

About the 1.8 Husky Update and the France Focus:

It would be really cool, if you could make it possible to define a captial list for a Nation, instead of only one capital and after that a hardcoded switch from city to city.

Would be easier to define, that after France lost all major cities on the continent, the next capital is in Algiers, instead of Corsica or Indochina.
After Algier falls next ist Mali, and after that Madagascar.

For now we would need to make decisions, which are kinda wonky.

Not like it was that hard to tie Italy to USSR. They had some connection points during Interbellum - trade and stuff. Also, last time I checked, Germany got into Asia-themed DLC just because it was number 1 played major of the game, not because it was somehow related to the region. If someone forgot - USSR is number 2 major.

Definitely. If a DLC about navies and governments in exile can somehow include Mexico, surely you can get Italy or France into a USSR DLC

Like you can probably imagine, the bottom line is that it is a really hard dlc to do, and you can not skimp on it. As you said it is a massively important theater and a popular nation. It takes more time and resources to do than we got right now without massive delays and waiting time for you guys. It is also design wise a tough nut to crack which in turn needs proper time to ripen. In short its the wrong time to do it right now. It doesnt mean we wont touch the theater or work on AI. We always do that, which I think you know looking back.

If I had to bet about the new DLC,:

For Whom the Bells Toll
A DLC based around civil war mechanics

France, Italy and Spain all had civil wars between 1936 and 1948.

Maybe Belgium and Greece will get thrown in

- Mechanics for each government to build legitimacy and gain bonuses against rival
- Options build unrest and resistance cells in occupied regions
- more control of which regions uprise
- Maybe multiple faction civil wars will become a thing
- paralyzed governments and military establishment might get represented more deeply

I respect all your opinions asking for a Soviet rework, but remember this game starts in 1936 and there are some nations bad covered in that period with important conflicts.

After 3 years of development I want to see a realistic Spanish civil war, prelude to the Second World War with more flavour. I know we didn't participate actively during the conflict but there were heroic Spanish (red or blue we are the same) fighting in African, French and Russian soil.

France, Italy, Spain, and Greece. I could not be happier.

(add the Ju52 and No. 1 MkIII rifle artwork)

I’m so glad my favorite country in hoi4 is getting a rework yay france!

I understand where you are coming from but I request you to understand our i.e. people who are asking for a Soviet and German-Soviet war rework perspective too. From our perspective it's already massive delays and waiting time for us as the development for this rework gets pushed further. Basically a delay and waiting time for at least an year.

so I will end this diary with a cool WW2 related vacation pic from @Bratyn. Bonus points if you can spot where its from :)

Looks a bit like the water power plant Dlouhé Stráně tbh.

A good Allied AI that should come with Hydra is a big step in helping the USSR. What good is a USSR overhaul if the Allies are incapable of opening an effective second front?

The expansion will remain unannounced until PDXCon
Does this mean it will be announced like Man the guns or more like Distant stars? :)
So we can look forward to something to keep us occupied during the holidays?
