HOI4 Dev Diary - Back from summer!

Hi everyone! The whole team is now back from vacation so its time to kick off dev diaries again!

At the moment we are all working on an unannounced expansion and the 1.8 Husky Update and work is progressing well, so we can start sharing some of it with you guys and gals again. The expansion will remain unannounced until PDXCon so look forward to that. Or better yet, come join us for fun, reveals and gaming in Berlin.

Just because we can’t give the full overview yet doesn’t mean we can’t start revealing stuff in true Paradox tradition, so next week we will be taking a look at France which is getting a full revamp. We are going to be doing our focus trees a bit differently this time around, so expect new nations to get covered in two diaries rather than a single one to better match their scope and structure.

I don't have a lot for today, and spent all my vacation moving and not going to any cool WW2 places, so I will end this diary with a cool WW2 related vacation pic from @Bratyn. Bonus points if you can spot where its from :)

See you all next week for something a lot more meaty!

They have never charged for fixes. The closest would be changing convoy routes, but that can be solved by naval and/or aerial supremacy. Changes to AI have always been in base patches (unless they deal with stuff like how to respond to Germany going Monarchist for instance). Fuel and the naval rework were in free patches. The Field Marshal rework was in a free patch. Turning off Man the Guns isn’t going to make Germany act worse. This opinion is coming from nowhere.
Of course it is coming from nowhere, because that was mainly a concern - I used twice some thing about expect, not clear, and such. That was concern, and at the same time a rant about things that I'm not happy with and expect to see changed. I cannot even know what have they done previously. Glad to read what you said, hope they patch those things - I'd gladly pay more if my current experience with the game was more positive in terms of balance.

Please fix existing bugs first that I already paid for.
Since the FM/Expansion Pass is over, I won't pay for any more DLC until the existing issues in the game are fixed to my satisfaction.
Judging on past performance, that means I'll take the free patch but pass on paid stuff.
This next DLC has to stand on it's own in both quality and features, no more marketing BS about being a bargain because of the Expansion Pass.

Wait...
Next DLC is not USSR, you teased us with a book about Arctic convoys, now you post a picture from Norway...

VICTORIA 3 CONFIRMED?!!??!?!!?

While I do agree that the eastern front is a pressing matter for the development to tackle, I will disagree that it should be the next update and expansion. Of course this is all subjective to one's opinion, but I would much prefer that France and Italy are updated before the USSR. I've never seen the Allies pull an Operation Overlord or Dragoon unless the player starts it, Operation Husky kind of happens and usually fails unless the player helps out but even than they send way too many divisions and supply becomes atrocious, Italy doesn't have it's civil war that started in 1943 so there should still be fighting for two more years, Italy doesn't have any representation of the lack of industry or how most of their officers were political which contributed to so many of their embarrassing defeats, France does have some of it's issues represented but they are very generic and nothing really comes out of them besides penalties and the two events about worker strikes, Italy jumps into the war early by joining Germany in 1939 or they invade Yugoslavia or Greece for no reason other than focuses. And those are just some of the problems I can name off the top of my head from just the two majors that are more or less confirmed for this expansion, no mentioning of Spain, Portugal, Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria or Belgium, all major candidates for reworks in the expansion. For me it makes more sense to work your way up to the huge meat grinder that was the eastern front, it was after all the last major German invasion and should be standalone.

I'd like to see Mediterranean Sea fleshed out with France and Italy being the major reworks, with Spain, Portugal, Greece and Turkey and if that's too much I'd say prioritize Spain and Portugal and make the DLC centred around the Latin countries, after that you tackle the huge beast of the Soviet Union with Finland, then do Greece, Bulgaria, Norway, Brazil, Belgium, Philippines and Siam/Thailand to name a few countries that should have representation since they actually fought in the war.

Eventually old DLC focus trees should be updated, TfV in particular has aged rather poorly and Poland's is very generic and lackluster too.

As long as the AI is largely improved, then USSR deserves a more dedicated DLC, even if it's a bit later than the upcoming (likely) Mediterranean DLC.

Spanish Civil War, Free France vs. Vichy, Mussolini vs. Allied Italy would be nice soon.

And yes, I like the idea of more focus trees for all the minor WW2 participants, even though the Majors have to be fleshed out first.

Telemark Power Plant in Norway.

At a guess I'd say civil war+Politics and espionage rework, with France (Vichy-Free France), Italy (including Civil War) Franco+Spain, plus possibly stuff for Turkey, Greece, and maybe Portugal (spy capital of WWII). Given the popularity of Kaiserreich style mods and the devs' stated interest in the matter I'd be ecstatic if we saw a real overhaul of the internal side of things.

Plus also the Italian Frogmen and their shenanigans need to be part of the game.

Well they didn't lock the EU IV mercenary company DD or the one when they said they were adding Bosnian culture so I doubt it'll happen on this thread. The decision of what the DLC and update have already been made, the people who've already complained need to accept it or give up on the game instead of repeating how they're disappointed or how "broken" the game is. I get frustration with representation of countries, and the significance of some over others, but the Game Director has a vision and we have to hope it's for the best and critique it once it's finished or we're shown gameplay changes in DD. Downvote this post all you want, it's not changing Podcat's decision since the team already started work on the future content. I know that I'm happier with a full region being revamped and updated over one country with maybe Finland being thrown in just for the Winter War.
My comment was more directed at the Spaniards who seem to be reenacting the Civil War on this thread.

How about both? Germany no longer can produce 600 divisions but get some buffs for her divisions making it fight better.

I will equally hate it if solution for 600 German divisions is 1200 Soviet divisions, this will just make things more ludicrous.
This is 100% needed I think. Germany has WAY too many divisions, and far too much manpower atm. 500-700 divisions is crazy.

Come on guys... Also, if you are talking about history, you should very much look at it from both sides, as those sources are rather biased.

This is precisely what I meant by the thread locking....

I really hope Italys rework is NOT a civil war. We really dont need Italy to be even WORSE than they are now. They are already a really shitty country to play or with AI((Ai is decent but not that good)) and a Civil war will just cripple their ability to do anything, unless their focus's DRASTICALLY return them.

They need a better Italy first option as well as an African focus tree. Civil wars are just obnoxious and only cripple nations ability to do anything. I rather my Italy not be turned into more of a joke than it is now.

Come on guys... Also, if you are talking about history, you should very much look at it from both sides, as those sources are rather biased.
Reality, the most biased of sources. Are we to regard propaganda pieces from the nationalists as fact, or the majority of the historical record kept by the rest of the world? According to some sources, the second world war, and related events, never happened. I didn't know TenCent had this much influence in the forum.

Claiming that there is a "good guy and bad guy" is indicative of propaganda and biased sources. Modern Spanish history is very complex, and simply stating that there was a military coup against a "lawfully elected government" is simplistic. It was a military coup backed up by a significant proportion of the populace. The leadership of Spain prior to the Second World War flip-flopped between political extremes during their elections, with both sides getting more radicalized by waves of violence committed by both sides (armed uprisings of workers countered by brutal counterinsurgency, assaults upon churches, etc.). When the Popular Front was elected, their legitimacy was undermined by far-left groups. The military and its supporters staged the coup because they were afraid of the influence the far-left groups had in the coalition, and what they would have done.
